“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
Gearheads it’s up to us to change this. Hot Rodding is going from being colorful to multiple shades of gray...
what I am talking about if you attend any kind of gearhead type of event. “ As one older hot rodder said at a recent event to me. “ the lack of young blood in our hobby, is directly related to the slow death of hobby”. I tend to be an optimist, but I do worry about this one. Reason I feel this way is all based on what I see and have seen.
Before I go any further this week, just so everyone understands, when I use the term “hot rodding”, I am talking about any and all cars or trucks that have been modified from stock trim to look better, run better or in most cases ...both. I am not just talking about pre-49 cars and trucks.
Gearheads it’s up to us to change this. It will take a little work from all of us. If you care about passing “hot rodding” down and on to the next generation, then teaching and exposing needs to be done by us “seasoned” hot rodders.
How so you might ask? Having attended a number of gearhead events already this year, some indoors and some outdoors, there is one color coming thru very brightly...GRAY!
Just like we had done for us and to us, we need to SHOW a potential young hot rodder how to do this thing called hot rodding.
I am not talking about the cars and trucks on display. I am talking about hair color that has become the primary shade at most events these days.
How about starting out by taking someone younger than you to car show or cruise-in. Doesn't cost much if anything and who knows, you may just light a fire inside a young person, just like it was lite in you years ago.
I get it….as we age and get life in order, we usually end up with some “disposable” cash to spend on the cars and trucks we love to build and drive. Older means well...grayer. The concern I am talking about now is the lack of younger people (who have blonde, brown, black etc. hair) participating in our hobby. You know
Your turn now...choice is yours...teach or watch this die off Live It Fully Everyday 5

Devastating Blaze Claims Funny Car Racer John Lawson’s Operation Longtime big-show and nostalgia nitro Funny Car racer John Lawson suffered the loss of his racing operation in a devastating blaze at his Joliet, Illinois home on February 3rd. According to a local report from Patch, a total of nine vehicles, including three race cars, were destroyed in the fire that consumed the large structure situated directly adjacent to Lawson’s home. Joliet firefighters were called to a storage facility for John Lawson’s Auto Rebuilders in the 700 block of Algonquin St. around 7:45 p.m. and remained on the scene for more than 12 hours following what was a fully-involved blaze — at one point more than Joliet 40 firefighters were present. The Joliet Fire Department successfully contained the fire to the storage facility, in spite of its close proximity to both Lawson’s home and the neighbors garage, a mere 3-feet away. While fighting the blaze, Lawson alerted fire personnel to the 300-gallons of nitromethane stored in drums inside the facility, which were kept cool to prevent them from exploding. “The owner made us aware that there were trailers and a lot of stuff inside that garage. The first responders weren’t even sure what building was on fire because there was so much smoke,” Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey told Patch. As images posted online by Lawson indicate, his entire racing operation was lost in the fire — his toter-home and trailer, Funny Car bodies and chassis, parts, and personal vehicles. Lawson’s place of business is located less than a 1/4 of a mile away. “There were no injuries from any citizens,” Blaskey said. “That building was 50 feet by 100 feet. We had to do a defensive attack. This fire had a big head start on us.” Lawson campaigns a late model Pontiac Firebird flopper with a single mag and fuel pump alongside his similarly-prepared 1970 Camaro flopper, with Joe Haas driving, at exhibition events around the Midwest.

On Friday, January 31, 2020 the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky celebrated the grand opening of a new exhibit with a ribbon cutting ceremony, bringing together icons of the 1950’s and 60’s ‘Kustom Kar Kulture.’ “One might ask why the NCM has devoted a year-long exhibit to the art and influence of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth,” said Dr. Sean Preston, President and CEO of the Museum. “While our Museum was established 25 years ago to be the caretakers and collectors of Corvette history, we understand that you cannot tell the story of the early days of Corvette without telling the story of the Ford Thunderbird. You cannot tell the story of Corvette Racing without talking about the Cobra, the Viper and the Ford GT. And you cannot tell the story of Corvette design without talking about those who influenced the designers, which brings us to Ed Roth.” Considered a renaissance man, Roth became a central figure in the 50’s and 60’s Kustom Kulture era of automobile history, becoming a cultural phenomenon himself in the process. With no formal education in engineering, he designed and created some of the era’s most iconic cars, many of which are displayed as part of the exhibit. The Revell model company would turn Roth’s car creations into toy model kits that would sell millions of units. One car, ‘Tweedy Pie,’ sold over 11 million units alone. When Hot Wheels emerged on the toy scene, they crafted a series of 16 cars that would include Roth’s ‘Beatnik Bandit.’ Both cars can be seen on display at the National Corvette Museum. ‘Rat Fink,’ a cartoon character created by Roth, later became the car culture mascot and would go on to introduce a generation of young people to the amazing world of automobiles. Some of those young people would grow up to build their own tributes to Roth, creating some of the amazing cars that can be seen in the exhibit. 8

2019 was the 9th year for the Southeastern ALL Chevy/ GMC Truck Nationals held in Moss-Wright Park in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Located a short distance north of Nashville TN, this small town with a population of about 16,000, is turned into a CHEVY-GMC town.
Bryan Ashely started this event eight years ago and has grown and nurtured the event with his experience and hardlearned lessons. His hard work has paid off as this event has grown into the largest General Motors-based truck show in the East. The show had more than 500 registered trucks for the 9th annual event, which is its biggest turnout to date. The number of participants has been increasing each and every year, which 22
23
looks great for their future events. For 2020 Bryan has moved the show to a new location to give it more room to grow even more. The unique GM showcase brings in trucks from all over the United States for a weekend full of truck talk with a town full of truck guys. Bryan Ashley, event promoter, says that trucks have come from as far as San Antonio, New Hampshire, Miami and even a few from Canada. While there are many great attributes for this show, of the highlights is the quality of this year’s specialty awards, which are meticulously made by Bullock’s Body Werks. Jason Bullock has been making them out of used car parts since the first year of the show and they are impressive in person. Any true gearhead would be proud to set this trophy in their front room for everyone to see, if the spouse allows, of course. Take a look here at just some of the great trucks there were at the 2019 show and make plans now to attend the 10th annual event in 2020. 24
