“ Ya Gotta know where to Go...The FUN Starts Here….”

Merry Christmas Since it’s Christmas, that means it’s a wrap for us... Let me start off by wishing all of you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!! No matter how you celebrate the Christmas holiday, may it be the best or one of the best you have ever had!! As it says on the cover of this issue, we have hit issue number 26 for 2021. As we publish every two weeks, it means this is the last issue for 2021. Where did 2021 go?? We will be taking a little extra time off between issues and enjoying the Christmas and New Years holidays. We will be back for our 22nd year of publication right after the New Year enters into our lives. Christmas time is one when many people reflect and count their blessings for the year coming to a close. I am no different than many of you. All of you are a huge blessing to me! That the multi-thousands of you think enough of what we do around here, puts a smile on our face and a glow in our heart. All of you are the

BEST present I could get. Like any kid, I write a letter to Santa to make sure he stops at my house too. Here is a copy of the letter I sent to Santa this year... Dear Santa, Your big round the world cruise-in is getting ready to happen while I write this. I have really tried to be good this year. I hope I make the “NICE” column on your list this year. My wish is simple Big guy, give our readers what they are wishing for from you for Christmas this year. Sprinkle some gearhead fun into their days and let them make a new hot rod friend in 2022 too. Please throw some Peace and Joy into our world too...we need it bad.

God bless you and all our readers too…

Merry Christmas to All! “Drive ’Em Don’t Hide ’Em”

GM Launches Chevrolet Supercar Down Under GM will replace the legendary Holden Commodore with a Camaro racer in Australia. While GM is hard at work promoting the fact that it actually sells EVs in the US, it's doing the complete moral opposite in Australia. The brand has just launched Chevrolet Racing in Australia, which will replace Holden Motorsport as the official racing arm for General Motors Australia and New Zealand. The move comes as GM ended the famous and much loved Holden brand in Australia last year. The Holden Commodore race cars participating in the Australian Supercars racing championship will now be replaced by the all-new Gen3 Camaro ZL1, which is closely based on the standard Chevrolet Camaro road car. This news comes as Ford also launches its brand new Ford Mustang Gen3 race car. Both cars have been designed to conform with the Supercars Gen3 rules for the 2023 season. The new Camaro racer was unveiled this week ahead of the famous Bathurst 1000 race. GM has been racing in the Australian Supercars series for over five decades under the Holden brand and is excited to make new headway under the Chevrolet brand. "Our company has a proud history of racing in Supercars for over five decades, where fierce rivalries were built between Holden and Ford," says Jim Campbell, Chevrolet Performance and Racing. "Chevrolet Racing is the future motorsports brand for General Motors Australia and New Zealand, providing ongoing excitement and a platform to support our existing portfolio of brands, including GM Specialty Vehicles, Holden Certified Service, GM Trade Parts and ACDelco." The new car was developed by GM's Supercars homologation team Triple Eight Race Engineering, KRE Engines, and Performance & Racing Centre and will feature Chevy's wellknown 5.7-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine. Both the Mustang and Camaro are built as closely to streetcar spec as reasonably possible, which should make for entertaining, and relatable racing. This news comes as the sixth-generation Camaro gets ready to enter its eighth year of production. The sad news is that by the time these cars enter the 2023 season, sales of the road-going models will be coming to an end. Chevy has previously stated that the Camaro will be replaced with an EV muscle sedan further down the line, making this the beginning and the end of an era. 10

Flat-Plane Crank DOHC LT6 to Power the 2023 Corvette Z06! It revs to 8,600 rpm, churns out 670 hp, and will power the new Corvette C8 Z06 supercar! Who will be the first to swap one into a classic hot rod? The LT6 engine that will power the new 2023 C8 Corvette Z06 is as game changing as the LS1 was when it was introduced in 1997. Bold statement? Yep, but once you delve into the guts of the LT6, and look at its specifications, that opening claim may end up being somewhat of an understatement. "The new Corvette Z06 defines the American supercar," said General Motors President Mark Reuss. "It builds on the distinctive design and groundbreaking dynamics introduced with the mid-engine Corvette and elevates them to deliver refined but uncompromising track capability with world-class performance." The Z06 is set apart by its beating heart: The all-new 5.5L DOHC LT6, the highesthorsepower naturally aspirated V-8 to hit the market in any production car—ever. As hot rodders, we're thinking in terms of salvaged swaps and crate engines, so let's take a deeper dive into this very cool bleeding-edge V-8. The 2023 Z06 is a supercar for those without supercar-sized wallets. Yeah, at around a $85k for the base model, it isn't cheap, but considering that it's on par with Lambos, Ferraris, and the like, it certainly falls on the more affordable side of the ledger. There are tons of stories out there about what an amazing hunk of engineering the C8 Z06 is, but we're here to talk about what motivates it down the highway and around your favorite road course: the revolutionary LT6 engine. This is the most powerful naturally aspirated factory engine ever stuffed into a Corvette: 670 hp at 8,400 rpm (with an 8,600-rpm redline) and 460 lb-ft of twist at 6,300 rpm should be enough to get anyone's attention. And, no, the 8,600-rpm part wasn't a typo, thanks to the super-lightweight rotating guts, short stroke, and oversquare cylinders.

Shelby American Reintroduces Shelby GT500KR Shelby American is bringing back the Ford Shelby GT500KR Mustang to honor the company’s 60th anniversary next year, the company announced. A limited run of 60 “King of the Road” post-title packages with 900-plus horsepower will be available worldwide for 2020-2022 model year Shelby GT500’s from Shelby American. “Sixty years ago, Shelby American and Ford Motor Company collaborated on their first car, the Shelby Cobra,” said Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American. “That relationship resulted in racing championships, victories over Ferrari at Le Mans and amazing Shelby cars based on the Ford Mustang. Today, we offer a line of Ford-based Shelby trucks and cars and have begun exploring electric vehicles. Every 2022 model year vehicle we build will wear a 60th anniversary badge to symbolize our heritage and bright future, beginning with the Shelby GT500KR.” This is only the third time in history that a version of the Shelby GT500 has carried the “King of the Road” name, the company said. The first time was in 1968 when the Shelby GT500KR was powered by the new 428 Cobra Jet V-8 that was conservatively rated at 335 horsepower. It was equipped with a modified suspension, redesigned front and rear end, a custom fiberglass hood and Cougar taillights. Shelby added a functional roll bar and wood-rimmed steering wheel. Offered in both fastback and convertible, Ford dealers sold 1,570 GT500KR models in 1968 (1053 fastbacks and 517 convertibles). Based on the world class 2020-2022 Ford Shelby GT500, the KR will boast more than 140 extra horsepower, dry carbon fiber hood, new wheels, tires, suspension tuning, interior and badges and more. Only 180 total (60 per model year) of the 900-plus-horsepower cars will be available in the USA, with 45 available overseas. “The current Shelby GT500 already has amazing capabilities,” said Vince LaViolette, Shelby American vice president of operations and chief of R&D. “We’re taking it to an entirely new level for the extreme driver. We integrated a new supercharger and coolers, then tuned the 5.2-liter V8 to churn out 900-plus horsepower on pump gas. The KR has more aggressive adjustable springs, Ford Performance sway bars and a new aggressive suspension tune. The exhaust was reworked to be even bolder, and we sliced 30 pounds off with an ultra-light dry carbon fiber hood that delivers even more cooling. An optional wide body version is even available.” Each car includes membership in Team Shelby, the worldwide club Carroll Shelby established in 2008, and will be documented in the official Shelby Registry.

The first production car will be auctioned at No Reserve on Jan. 29 by the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company in Scottsdale. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Carroll Shelby Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF). The winning bidder can choose from any standard Ford color available on the Shelby GT500 Shelby GT500KR production will begin in Las Vegas during the first quarter of the year. Owners of 2020 and 2021 model year Shelby GT500s can contact Shelby American about transforming their car into a KR as of Feb. 1, 2022. Orders for 2022 model year cars will be accepted and they will also wear anniversary badges. 14

Corvette Plant & NCM Motorsports Park Suffer Tornado Damage The weekend of December 11 & 12, saw a string of tornadoes that was devastating for many people as the squall line marched its way across the country from Canada to Texas. One area that was hit especially hard was Corvette’s Hometown, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Corvette has had deep roots in this small Kentucky town ever since the production of America’s favorite sportscar moved there in 1981. As Corvette’s roots grew deeper into the Kentucky countryside, the National Corvette Museum was founded just across the street from the entrance to the Corvette Assembly Plant. Over the past few years, Corvette enthusiasts were able to enjoy yet another Vette-centric venue when the NCM Motorsports Park opened to the public. Enthusiasts from around the globe have trekked to Bowling Green, Kentucky to enjoy all that each of these venues has to offer. This past weekend, those tornadoes came to visit Bowling Green. There are reports of significant loss of life directly related to the storm and many images show the extensive damage to property and buildings as a result of the ensuring tornado. As a tornado traversed the area around GM’s Bowling Green Assembly, the NCM, and the NCM Motorsports Park, it continued its track of damage, causing significant damage to the NCM Motorsports Park buildings, as well as causing a fire at the Bowling Green Corvette assembly plant. As a result of the damage at the assembly plant, production was halted for the week of December 13th. GM has issued the following statement:

“We can confirm that the fire that took place as a result of the tornado activity at the Bowling Green Assembly plant early Saturday morning has caused damage to the facility, including the room and an employee entrance. Maintaining a safe work environment for plant employees is our top priority. Therefore, we are canceling production on the first and second shifts the week of December 13 as our trained teams work to get tooling, equipment, and the facility space up to standard.” The NCM Motorsports Park also sustained extensive damage and issued this statement via social media: “It is with great disappointment that we announce the suspension of all activities at the NCM Motorsports Park. This includes all Touring Laps/Experiences, Twinkle at the Track, and the Run, Run Rudolph 5k. Like many businesses in our community, the NCM Motorsports Park sustained heavy damage from the weather event, making it temporarily unsafe to welcome guests. The MSP team is working to evaluate the damage caused by the storms and to develop a plan for repairs and reopening. We will continue to update our website and social media channels with the latest information. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this unprecedented situation. Our hearts are with those across the Commonwealth who have been impacted by these storms.” The National Corvette Museum luckily did not suffer such extensive damage as the assembly plant and motorsports park. The NCM posted this message on its website in response to the storm. “During the storms on December 11, 2021, the Museum was spared from significant damage, and the building will remain CLOSED on Sunday, December 12.” 15

Every drag racer dreams of that perfect pass down the dragstrip.

Hard to do...cut a perfect light...keep it straight...run the best speed had. It doesn't happen often but when it does, there is much to cele your pit.

Steve Gibbs and Cindy Gibbs (Steve’s daughter) got that perfect pa November 6th & 7th this year. After the last nitro fume cleared out o was much to celebrate for these 2 stalwarts of keeping the glory da ing.

Being this was number 4, they 26had some good runs for the Nitro Re

three runs. The runs weren’t perfect but not too shabby. Using what they learned in the three previous events, and leaning on a great behind the scenes support team, NITRO REVIVAL #4 was a GREAT EVENT!! If you missed it, you missed one cool event.

As many know, Steve Gibbs was the brainchild of the California Hot Rod Reunion, an event they thought would only happen once but is still thriving at Famoso Dragstrip in Bakersfield California every October and its junior event, The National Hot Rod Reunion held at the Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green Kentucky each Father Day Weekend. Steve created both of these events after

28

29

a storied career with the NHRA. The drag racers dont call him “Hook” for no reason. After getting out of the Reunion business, Steve couldn't sit still. He knew that people loved these front engine dragsters, fuel altered, REAL funny cars and many other race cars from the glory days of drag racing, when a guy could run a fuel car out of his garage every weekend. Nitro Revival #4 landed at the Irwindale drag strip, in the area that drag racing was born in back in the day as they say. Many of us have heard the old radio ads about BIG car count drag races from many moons ago. 24, 32 or even 64 fuel car fields being hyped, NITRO REVIVAL blew all that away with 74 plus nitro breathing drag cars in the pits, on the track, on display and getting fired up and yes...CACKLING huge loads of Nitromethane.

Saturday saw the official kickoff happen with TV Tommy Ivo’s BARNSTOMER and Chris “The Greek” Karamesines CHIZZLER dragster being push started from the finish line area and doing the lane swap turn around at the starting line area before make a half track pass!!! Everyone went crazy over this kick off. 30

31

Saturday also saw over 200 pre-72 cars and trucks over in the HOT ROD HANGOUT area of the show. Some very nice rides on display and some historic hot rods hanging out like Lil’ John Buttera’s ‘29 Ford Roadster that drove across the country. Sunday at 1pm, right after the National Anthem was played, all the NITRO cars started up simultaneously….WOW WOW WOW!! There was a cool display of land speed cars on display and historic hot rods and Indy roadsters too. Plenty of vendors were on hand for all the participants to check out. Steve and Cindy are going to do it again in 2022. NITRO REVIVAL #5 will take place on the first weekend of November at Irwindale Dragstrip. Make your plans now to be there because you don’t want to miss this much nitro fueled fun. Nitro Revival 5...wonder if Steve thought they would only do it one time…..
