Shops are looking for “qualified” and “experienced” help The Hot Rod Industry has a serious hiring problem... There is a very serious manpower issue within the hot rod industry. Many hot rod shops are looking to hire people but they are not able to fill the openings. If you look on social media, pick whichever one you want, there are positions open at high end hot rod and specialty vehicle shops. There have been openings for more than a while. Shops are looking for “qualified” and “experienced” help. This means job ready the minute they come in the shop for them The work load says they need to move vehicles thru in good order. Part of the problem is there aren't many qualified applicants, at least to the job description they have. Applicants need to be able to mig/tig weld, do fabrications and be experienced in tear down and re-build of vehicles. Not many meet this Reason for this is not many schools are teaching shop classes or if they are, they very watered down. This is a huge mistake in my opinion. One of the other issues we have is
any job working with your hands is looked down upon by many. Hi-Tech is the buzzword and lots think this is where they need to be. Not everyone is cut out to be a “mechanical” type worker. People who think they might like to do this and say something about it, a lot of times get talked down to and that causes them to look elsewhere for work. SAD! The other situation that exists is a company that is willing to take someone in with less than all the skills they really want. I get it, the bottom line drives a lot, but if you take time to train someone, you get a very loyal employee in the end, trained the way you want them. As an employer why not look into grant programs that will help offset the training costs and little slower throughput in your shop. I don’t have all the answers...if I did I would be a gazillionaire. I do know something needs to be done and soon More Fun In 2021

“the fun starts here”….
ALEX XYDIAS TURNS 99! A better time couldn’t have been had on Monday March 23rd! Hot Rod Hero and Icon Alex Xydias turned a young 99 years old. Alex’s hot rod buddy and all around great guy Bruce Meyer hosted one of the all time great gatherings to celebrate Alex’s Birthday. A great collection of friends and many a legend came from far and wide to honor the great man and even do some bench racing. It seemed like every other second a head spinning statement would be made from the mic; “I remember when I bought Alex’s So-Cal tank for $600. Sold it years later for the same price”, said Ed Iskenderian! Of course, nothing could top Alex’s speech which included, "I'll tell you this but you may not believe me, but I can remember the sensation of being in that car at 200mph like it just happened yesterday. Really. As fresh as if it’s happening now. But we all know it was a long time ago . . . because I’m 99!” To say that Alex has “still got it” would be the understatement of the century. We could all learn a lot from Alex, and none of it would need to involve cars or racing. A life that continues to be well lived, and then some! Here’s to looking forward to his 100th! A day that none who attended will ever forget.

Petersen Automotive Museum to Reopen March 25 The Petersen Automotive Museum will reopen to the public on Thursday with new exhibits, new vehicles and a new schedule of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wed. through Sun., the museum announced. Additionally, the museum will offer verified health care workers and first responders complimentary admission for themselves and up to three immediate family members for the rest of 2021. The museum will follow the health and safety guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the state of California and the county of Los Angeles to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, museum staff said. Staff members and visitors are required to wear protective face coverings. Social distancing guidelines of at least six feet will be enforced with designated entrance and exit signs. There will be designated navigation paths for each exhibit. The museum will also increase the frequency of routine cleaning and offer hand sanitizing stations on each floor. Interactive exhibits including the Forza racing simulators and Discovery Center will remain closed.
“We are excited to welcome visitors back to the museum in a safe and responsible manner,” said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. “We cannot thank the healthcare personnel and first responders enough for everything they have done for our community. We hope this small token of our appreciation signals how grateful we are to them and their families.” During the closure, the Petersen virtually launched three exhibits including “Supercars: A Century of Spectacle and Speed,” which showcases the evolution of the supercar; “Extreme Conditions,” which highlights 11 custom competition, recreational and utilitarian off-roading vehicles; and “Redefining Performance,” which features Porsche’s most innovative road and race vehicles. Other blockbuster exhibits currently on display at the Petersen include “Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy,” “Reclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collection” and “Building an Electric Future” presented by Volkswagen. All tickets must be pre-purchased online. In order to receive complimentary access, health care personnel and first responders will need to reserve tickets online and provide a physical copy of professional verification at museum check-in. 8
Big Oly Bronco Up for Auction The Big Oly Bronco is slated to cross the Mecum auction block at Dana Mecum’s 34th Original Spring Classic scheduled for May 14-22 in Indianapolis, the firm announced. Based on a 1969 Ford Bronco and with sponsorship in place from Olympia Brewing Company, Big Oly was driven to victory by Parnelli Jones and Bill Stroppe in the 1971 Baja 1000, 1972 Baja 1000, 1973 Baja 500 and 1973 Mint 400. After an attempt at the Baja 1000 in a mostly stock Bronco in 1968, Jones, Stroppe and mechanic Dick Russell built a faster, stronger, lightweight Bronco with a tube frame and body made of fiberglass and aluminum. The innovative off-roader was powered by a 351/390 HP Ford Windsor V-8 engine mated to a modified Ford C6 B&M hydro transmission and sported two 22-gallon fuel cells. Featuring a chrome moly space frame, fiberglass and aluminum bodywork with extreme shock absorber and suspension travel, a big wing on top, a split windshield to reduce dust in the cockpit and a spool rear end for better traction, Big Oly was a sensation right from the beginning. The 154-inch-long, 72-inch-wide vehicle had a dry weight of merely 2,620 pounds, making it lighter than some small sports cars of the day. After breaking an axle in its first try in the 1970 Baja 1000, Big Oly went on to dominate offroad racing for the next few years, winning the Baja 1000 in 1971 and 1972, and the Baja 500 and Mint 400 in 1973. The inaugural win for Big Oly at the Baja 1000 in 1971 was achieved with a time of 14 hours 59 minutes.

MAR 2021 MAR 27: NORTHPORT AL: Spring Bash — The Reunion: Spring Bash - The Reunion! Car show? Kinda...Cruise-In? Sorta... Bunch of friends getting together again? BIN-
GO!!! Spring Bash - The Reunion is much more than a car show. Sixteen (16) years ago Spring Bash was born under the direction of No Limits Kustoms. It was the first to bring you Club Wars, which eventually became known as Car Club Olympics and home to the NLK Championship Belt. Over the years the event raised thousands of dollars to help families all over West Alabama. After a few years off..... it’s time to get the gang back together! Free entry, no judging, no trophies.... just bring your rides, hang out, see everyone..... even bring your grills if you want.
No ride to show? No problem! If you’ve ever been to a Bash show, you know that as much as we loved the cool rides, we loved the people more. Every year, somebody took a trophy home that didn’t think they would? Why? Because we knew that would keep the drive alive to finish the build..... keep trying... and bring a smile. home while her family will be sitting out in the front yard as we all pass by to show our LOVE & RESPECT for such a AMAZING woman. We will be meeting up at 11:30 am and start rolling out at 12:00 sharp. Carol lives pretty close to the park so it won’t be that long of a drive to get there. We would like to ask if everyone could
please tie a Blue ribbon on their car honoring Carol and please bring a card with a little note on how Carol touched your heart. So the family can sit down all together and read them out loud and laugh at a crazy story or cry from a very touching story. What is it about the 1932 Ford? First year for a V8 offering by the Ford Motor Company? One year only styling., which was unheard of at the time. Whatever it is, hot rodders have taken to the ‘32 Ford from the time it rolled off the assembly line. In the early days of hot rodding, the Roadster model was the hot Rodders choice. The racing at the dry lakes in Southern California saw Deuces meet. Hot rodders stripped off the fenders, headlights, top and anything they weight off and make it run faster. After WW2, hot rodders picked up where they left off before being shipped ov world. Pioneering hot rodders like Isky, Edelbrock and many others built busi speed parts for the flathead V8 which got its start in 1932. 44

The ‘32 Grille and the front end of the Deuce has become the face of hot rodding. No surprise because so many people love “THE DEUCE”. There are many companies reproducing many body versions of the ‘32 Ford. Roadster, Coupe or Sedan, there is a reproduction body available in either steel or fiberglass. In fact, sales how there are more ‘32 Fords now then what were produced by Henry.
There are more than a few events that are held each year across the USA, dedicated to celebrating the ‘32 Ford. One of the best or as some 32 lovers believe, is the HAVASU DEUCES show. 2021 did not disappoint! A three day celebration of all things ‘32 Ford. It’s hosted by the Havasu Deuces car club out of Lake Havasu AZ. It’s so popular that they sold out all entries for the 2021 show way before the event even took place. ‘32 Lovers from across the USA drove to be part of the show. The hot rod fun started this year on Thursday, March 4th. Rodders showed up at the Hampton Inn to pick up registration packets and see old friends coming into town. Thursday afternoon and 46

evening kicks things off with hot rodders meeting downtown on McCulloch Blvd. They started parking cars on the boulevard at 1pm, lining up off of Mesquite at the Pima Wash Parking lot. Nothing but hot rod fun going on here. Day 2 on Friday sees more hot rodders getting registered. Friday also sees the Garage Tours taking off at 9 am from The Hampton Inn. For many hot rodders this is one of the favorite things to do as part of this event. Two garages are very popular. John Stimac’s and Dick Razcuk’s garage are way more then just a big space. They always have a lot of people checking out all the good stuff these guys have going on. Friday evening saw the Mexican Food dinner (Catered by Chico’s Tacos) back at the Cissell compound as in previous years. After a hard day of touring killer garages, nothing like some great tacos and cold drinks to make the day perfect. Saturday is Show and Shine day at the Rotary Park Ballfields. The gates opened at 7am and the show ran until 3 pm. The show highlights “ The Deuce”. Every color and body style were part of the show and all parked front and center. The show also has other “specialty cars” in the event too. The mix of all these cool cars and trucks make for one killer event. If you missed this years show or have never been, make plans for the 2022 Havasu Deuce Show….You will be glad you did!
