West Geauga’s Ethan Bartlett won his 100th career varsity wrestling match Jan. 20 at Austintown Fitch High School. Bartlett, at 150 pounds, finished second in the Chagrin Valley Wrestling championships on Jan. 27.
The upcoming spring soccer season is starting off with a brandnew soccer experience for the West Geauga community: the West G Little Kickers program. West Geauga Soccer Club (WGSC) and West Geauga Recreation Council (WGRC) have joined forces to create a single, improved program for our young players going forward. This collaboration brings together boys and girls aged 3 to 8 (U4, U6 & U8 levels) for a unified soccer opportunity. In recent years, leaders of both organizations have made conscious efforts to work together to improve the overall soccer experience for players in the West Geauga community and to make it easier for parents to navigate. Before this partnership, both organizations had their separate programs – WGSC’s Kid Kickers and WGRC’s Kick-n-Play.
West G Little Kickers is the latest in these efforts and will be a full replacement of both previous programs. This partnership combines the best aspects of WGSC and WGRC's well-established programs, offering a comprehensive introduction to soccer. Led by Chris Mueller, a youth soccer training expert, the program focuses on FUNdamentals like dribbling, ball control, passing and defense. Mueller brings more than 20 years of experience in youth soccer training, most recently as the Director for Juniors Academy at Cleveland Force, Northeast Ohio’s premier youth training program. Mueller shares the mindset of both WGRC and WGSC that this program needs to not only provide training appropriate for all skill levels, but also build confidence through solid fundamentals See Little Kickers• Page 6

Letters to the Editor Kolar: Captivating, Inspiring, Compelling
I had the good fortune to attend a program at The West Woods Nature Center. Chief Naturalist John Kolar captivated the audience from the moment he introduced himself to talk about John Muir's contributions to our national parks. What a delight it was to be in the presence of such a gifted teacher. He spoke clearly and eloquently. He held my attention by inspiring me to think while listening. His creative demonstrations involved audience participation and incorporated other disciplines. He made me glow with laughter.
Mr. Kolar left me with a feeling of wonder and a compelling curiosity to learn more while inspiring me to tell people what I learned. He even prepared a mini-museum to showcase Muir's books, quotations and letters. I told Mr. Kolar if he could be cloned and sent to classrooms, students would run to his classes. He responded that he is available to all schools and grade levels. I hope teachers will read this and contact the Geauga Park District to invite John Kolar to speak to their students. Obituaries Elizabeth Lentz
Elizabeth “Liz” Lentz (nee Cain), 70, of Chester Township, passed away unexpectedly Jan. 24, 2024, after a recent cancer diagnosis. Cherished mother of Megan (Keith) Campbell and Rachel (Travis) Lemmings; devoted grandmother of Drew, Tyler, Katie, and Wesley; loving daughter of the late Howard and Helen (nee Shaner) Cain; dearest sister to Margaret Lamb (deceased), Chris (deceased) (Terry) Cain, Catherine (Allan) Kaulback, Walker Scott Cain (deceased), Bruce Cain (deceased) and Carolyn Cain; dear aunt and loyal friend of many. Liz cherished every moment with her friends, family, children and grandchildren. She loved to joyously travel the world, ex-
press her creativity through art and other projects, experience new culinary flavors paired with a glass (or two) of wine, read and spend time among nature. An outspoken environmental advocate, dedicated Humanist and avid protector for all creatures big and small, Liz made a positive impact on all her passionate causes. She was undeniably the best mother and an even better grandmother. Liz dotingly immersed herself in every opportunity to be with her grandchildren, listening to their thoughts and feelings, attending all youth activities, hosting many memorable sleepovers and creating lifelong memories through excursions. Her love was unconditional. As a former Gates Mills resident for 66 years, Elizabeth loved growing up and living in the Chagrin Valley along the river. She was a 1971 Mayfield City Schools graduate before earning a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University.
Among the various roles she held, unquestionably her most rewarding job was raising her two daughters. Most recently prior to retirement, Liz enjoyed her work at Mayfield City Schools as a secretary and then librarian. Highly respected and deeply cared about by her co-workers, family and friends alike, Liz will, forever, be terribly missed. Contributions may be made in memory of Liz to Lifebanc or Foundation for Geauga Parks. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Liz at The Family Life Center, 16349 Chillicothe Road, Bainbridge Township on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, from 2-5 p.m. As a tribute to Liz’s radiant life, we welcome you to wear color and bring your children to fill the room with love and laughter. Cremation and arrangements entrusted to DeJohn Funeral Home. Online obituary, guestbook, and order flowers at www.DeJohnCares.com.
George F. Owens III
George F. Owens III, 87 years of age, died at home surrounded by family in Chester Township on Jan. 22, 2024. Born March 11, 1936, in Oakland, Calif., George was a resident of Chesterland since April 1976. Prior to that, he resided with his family in Euclid, since approximately 1962. George’s hobbies over the years included hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and working around the house and property. He was very proud of his military service, U.S. Army (Active Duty) and Army Reserves. After George’s stint in the military, he was employed by Champion Spark Plug Co. beginning in 1962. At Champion, he was a sales representative responsible for a large portion of Northeast Ohio, making calls on repair shops, auto dealerships and auto parts distributors/retailers. George retired from Champion in 1998. After retiring, he worked at a local Home Depot store for a number of years. Professionally, George really enjoyed meeting with people and closing the sale. He was a diehard Browns fan to the end, but he was probably happiest when he was at home puttering around on some project or another. George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol A. Owens (nee Borchert); son, George
F. Owens IV; daughters Lori A. Elmore, Caren G. Owens and Joann M. Tackla; grandson, Michael O. Elmore; granddaughter, Kelly M. Elmore; and sister, Tina Owens Hibbs. He was preceded in death by his parents, George F. Owens II and Frances Owens (nee Edelen); and daughter Dona M. Owens. There was a private service for the family Jan. 27, 2024, after which he was laid to rest at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Township Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.gattozziandson.com for the Owens family.

and sportsmanship. But above all, Mueller emphasizes the importance of making soccer enjoyable for kids, especially at such a young age. The West G Little Kickers will offer sessions that cater to each age group, ensuring targeted skill development that is mindful of the length of time and frequency of practices, leading to a positive experience
for both players and parents. The program aims to create a thriving soccer community by fostering a love for the game at the right skill level. This program will help each player find the path best suited for them. As players approach the U9/U10 age level, families will have conversations with WGRC and WGSC to determine the best path forward based on individual preferences and skill level. Another feature of the West G Little Kickers program is that the U8 level will play games against local communities, with parent volunteer coaches. Parent coaches, whether experienced or brand new to soccer, will receive training, curriculum and support throughout the season from Chris Mueller as well as WGRC, and WGSC. This makes stepping into coaching, even if you’ve never done it before, a whole lot less intimidating and we welcome you to give it a try. Although things are changing, families will still recognize some familiar faces at practices. Sarah Neale, the Director of WGSC and Tina Heffron the Director of Soccer for WGRC, will still be around to assist, ensuring a smooth transition into this new program. They are both looking forward to seeing the positive impact the West G Little Kickers program will have on our community. For any questions before registration begins in mid-February, reach out to WESTGLITTLEKICKERS@GMAIL.COM. Keep an eye on westgeaugasoccer.com, wgrc. org/soccer, and the organizations' Facebook pages for specific program information. Get ready for a soccer season filled with fun, learning, and community spirit!
