Top Students Compete in Noetic Math Contest

Some of the top math students at Lindsey Elementary and West Geauga Middle schools recently competed in the Noetic Learning Math Contest. The semiannual problem-solving contest consists of 20 creative math problems to be solved independently.

Eric Posante, of Chester Township, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Ohio University. He is in the electrical engineering program.

Jacob Grinstead and Conner Vieira, both of Chester Township, were named to the dean’s list at Slippery Rock University for the spring semester.

William Fazekas and John Patterson, both of Chester Township, were named to the dean’s list at Pennsylvania Western University for the spring semester.

Margo Schweter, a 2015 West Geauga High School graduate from Chester Township, attended John Carroll University, where she double majored in communications, specializing in integrated marketing and East Asian studies. She also spent a year in Japan, attending Sofia University in Tokyo for a study abroad research project.

At JCU, Margo was awarded the Fr. Richard Schuchert Memorial Prize for Excellence in East Asian studies and was president of the Asian Pop Culture Club. In May, Schweter graduated with Distinction from Tiffin University with an MBA in international business. She is also a member of the Delta MU Delta International Honor Society.

Lucas Sadler, of Chester Township, has made the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater dean's list for the spring semester.

Melissa Sterkel, of Chester Township, was named to the dean’s list at Belmont University for the spring semester.

Road Closure

Old Mill Road will be closed intermittently between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. from June 3 through June 28 for road culvert replacements related to the paving project on County Line and Old Mill roads. Fenton C. Koch

Fenton C. Koch, age 94, of Chesterland, passed away peaceful ly on May 23, 2024.

He was the son of Ernest and Arvilla Koch, of New Castle, Pa., and loving hus band of Peggy (nee Minner) Koch.

Obituaries

Fenton is survived by his wife, Peggy, of 60 years; children, Jeff (Cathy), Matt (Shirley) and Kim; grandchildren, Nicole, Chloe and JR; and five great-grandchildren.

He was a long-time partner at High Temperature Systems, Inc., Active Chemical Systems, Inc., and Graphite Technology, Inc. in Chagrin Falls.

He graduated from New Castle High School in Pennsylvania in 1948, and from Youngstown State University, where he majored in mechanical engineering, in 1956. That year, he also was awarded the Henrick Ovesen Award for mechanical engineering, and the Henry Roemer Prize for Men for outstanding work in mechanical engineering.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Fenton served as a Hurricane Hunter in the VX4 Squadron from 1948 to 1952. It was one of his proudest achievements.

In retirement, Fenton played golf for many years and was a partner in BLM Properties.

Beyond anything else, Fenton loved spending time with the family he adored, and laughing with cherished friends across Geauga County.

A die-hard Cleveland Guardians fan, he rarely missed a game. Fenton was a devoted husband, a proud and loving father and grandfather, and a kind and witty friend who lived life with gratitude for his many blessings. He once described himself as “the most contented” person he knew. His family is heartbroken to lose him and will miss him every day.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Fenton to Wounded Warrior Project.

Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Fenton at The DeJohn Funeral Home & Celebrations Center of Chesterland, 12811 Chillicothe Road, on Thursday, June 6, 2024, from 1-3 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Joanne Graham

Joanne Graham (nee Atterholt), age 90, passed away peace fully May 26, 2024, at her residence.

Born Nov. 22, 1933, in Cleveland, she grew up in Cleve land Heights before moving to Chester Township in 1960.

Joanne was an extraordinarily respected librarian and teacher with Cleveland Public Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1996. After retiring, she volunteered at the Geauga County Public Library, Berkshire Elementary School Library in Burton, and also tutored many area middle and high school students in English and math.

Joanne was also a longtime and active member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Chester.

She is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob;” sons, Mark (Chris) and Maurice; grandchildren, Corey (Callie) Buczkowski and Alison Graham; great-grandson, Myles J. Buczkowski; and sister, Phyllis Brown.

Joanne is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Maime (nee McGlaughlin) Atterholt.

Family and friends called at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chesterland, May 30, 2024.

Private services and interment at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Joanne’s name may be made to the Berkshire Elementary School Library, 14155 Claridon Troy Road, Burton, OH 44021.

11:01 p.m., Hovey Drive. Raccoon just came into the house. Caller cannot get the animal outside. Come in through the garage door. No raccoon on scene; assisted putting window screen in.

CITIZEN ASSIST

May 24

12:47 p.m., Opalocka Drive. Female entered the police department and inquired about suspicious activity her husband was doing. Female escorted to interview room for more information. After a few minutes, female changed her mind and stated she no longer wanted to make a report and requested police document nothing. Cleared.

FRAUD

May 22

11:58 a.m., Parker Drive. Would like to speak to an officer regarding possible fraud over selling a 4-wheeler. Complainant had his Facebook Marketplace post copied and listed by someone else. Post was removed and police assistance no longer needed, but caller wanted police to be aware in case the other person comes to his home.

HARASSMENT

May 16

1:27 p.m., Merrie Lane. Caller received an email with photos of her, her information and husband’s information. Requesting extra patrol. No investigation required due to company first looking into it. See report.

INFO REPORT

11:50 a.m., Mayfield Road. Possible skimmer on card reader, middle gas pump on west side. Officer spoke with gas station em-

ployees. Card scanner replaced due to being older. All pumps check OK.

JUVENILE PROBLEM

May 16

4:24 p.m., Heath Road. Youth took off because he was upset. Mom has been chasing him and now cannot see him. Male just located. On scene, officer spoke with mother who stated she wanted officer to speak to her son about the importance of telling your parents where you are going before you leave. No physical or threats of violence.

SUSPICIOUS

May 22

7:32 p.m., Kirkwood Drive. Adult daughter left with a man in a Mercedes. Mother is concerned because daughter does not make sound decisions. Wants to speak to an officer.

May 28

7:42 a.m., Mayfield Road. Caller hears people “drilling” into her house. She thinks they may be trying to make a tunnel. Caller is not home.

TRESPASSING

May 17

5:47 p.m., Mayfield Road. Ex-employee used a key, wrote bad things on dry erase board, turned up the sound system causing the speakers to blow. He was seen pacing back and forth on camera. Nothing taken as far as they can see on the cameras. See report.

May 19

4:58 p.m., Lake Forest Drive. Caller advised multiple people are coming onto their property to go fishing in pond. Advised they also are wading through the private part of the pond. Property owner did not want officer to have the subjects leave, just wanted officer to clarify property lines and respect of other people’s property. Parties advised.
