Students Take 2nd Place in NASA Competition By Jennifer Turkoc editor@geaugamapleleaf.com
A future theoretical physicist, 12th-grader Rosie Fahey, and a future biochemist, 12th-grader Eileen Faulk, are making good use of their education. They participated in a nationwide NASA competition and presented their experiment to the West Geauga Schools Board of Education at their Jan. 22 meeting. Their goal was to create a shape using a 3D printer out of a material that does not like water. The three objects, with one differing in mass from the others, were sealed in a vessel that was partially filled with water. The vessel was then dropped in the NASA Glenn Research Center’s 2.2-second microgravity Drop Tower, which mimics an absence of gravity. See NASA • Page 11

Chester Resident Presses Trustees on FD Raise, Levy By Jennifer McKevitt editor@geaugamapleleaf.com
Angry resident commentary continued at the Chester Township Trustees meeting Jan. 31 as Karen Austin held the floor. Austin, a former township fiscal officer, is troubled by an upcoming 2.75-mill additional levy for the Chester Township Fire Department. If passed, the levy would cost homeowners $96.25 annually per $100,000 property valuation and yield $1,019,000, according to the Geauga County Auditor’s Office. “Is our fire chief a paramedic? If
not, why is he supervising paramedics if he doesn’t have the training?” Austin asked. Council member Bob Rogish confirmed Fire Chief John Wargelin is an EMT. Austin went on to express dismay at the 30-percent raises previously given in order to keep and attract new members to the fire team. “Was there advice from the fiscal officer that this was a financially sound thing to do?” Austin said. Rogish repeated the previous meeting’s explanation about high See Trustees • Page 4
