Senior Health Fair Brims With Offerings Oct. 2

CBT Tree, Boost Mode Vitadrip Spa and others will be joining the mix of vendors at this year’s Senior Health and Wellness Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 2 at the Geauga Family YMCA in Munson Township.

The fair, held every year in October, continues to grow in success, connecting older adults with myriad area resources to help them stay active, healthy and happy.

“The wonderful thing about this event is that so many vendors, also dedicated to senior health and wellness, are doing health screenings, providing information on services, giving free samples and giveaways, and selling items,” said Diane Gorom, active older adult coordinator for the Geauga YMCA, adding

the health fair, held in partnership with University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, helps her do her job — which is to design programming to help seniors stay active and healthy.

“I love that we are able to connect so many seniors to different goods and services around the area all in one day and all in one place,” she said. “Admission is free and it is open to the whole community.”

Debbie Drenik, 67, of Thompson Township, said she loved attending the health fair in 2022.

“I received great information and followed some of the advice I received and it really helped,” she said. “I also enjoyed all the free things and samples, and I bought a few things, too.”

This year’s fair, at 12460 Bass Lake Road, will host 35 vendors offering screenings, health informa-

tion, samples, free giveaways and goods, Gorom said.

“The CBD Tree, (of Kirtland), will have CBD products that offer help with pain relief, inflammation, anxiety and insomnia,” she said. “They will have information, samples and a mix of products to purchase including tinctures, gummies, chocolate and topicals.”

Boost Mode Vitadrip Spa, of Chardon, will have information on their services and the benefits of IV vitamin and mineral infusion therapy, as well as a registered nurse available to answer questions, Gorom added.

Other new vendors include Avon selling popular lines of lotion, perfumes, make-up and jewelry; Reserve Hearing Center, of Chardon, offering free hearing screenings;

Chester Government Update

The Chester Township Board of Trustees meeting on Aug. 24 began with an executive session to discuss employee matters with Fire Chief Bill Shaw and Road Superintendent John Onyshko.

Upon returning to public session, a conversation was had involving residents; representative Don Rice from the Metzenbaum Center, Geauga County Board of Developmental Disabilities; the Geauga County Board of Mental Health; Joy Black, of Emerald Rose, which is leasing one of the homes for developmentally disabled clients from the county commissioners who own the property; and the trustees. Commissioner Jim Dvorak was also present and briefly spoke.

The purpose of the meeting was to better understand the current and potential future uses for the property. Some residents questioned the use of the property versus what the deed restrictions defined and whether zoning regulations are met. Rice commented that the founding organization no longer exists. The Cleveland Foundation manages the money and they have no interest in managing the properties. Rice added that attorneys are working through some of the issues.

Finding uses for the property to receive income to offset the cost of building maintenance is a goal Rice has been working on. He also explained that federal law has changed how clients needing mental health and disability services has changed over the years with an emphasis on getting clients out into the community rather than being housed in a large group facility. He encouraged people to attend their board of directors meetings, with the dates and times published on their website at geaugadd.org.

In road department business, trustees welcomed back mechanic Steve Voigt who was rehired at an hourly rate of $36.72. The board also hired Frank Artino as a full-time road worker 1 at $23.42 per hour. Onyshko expressed some concerns over the quality of repairs that were outsourced to Cerni Motors and he will provide a summary report of issues.

Replacement batteries in the amount of $2,259.36 were approved for the police department’s hand-held radios and an after the fact motion was approved for the police assistance at the Aug. 19 Chesterland Historical Foundation flea market.

A public hearing was set for zoning amendment Z-2023-1 for Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. Details regarding this proposed amendment concerning supplemental associated with variances can be found at chestertwp.com under Zoning.

Mindy Denamen was approved as an alternate to the Chester Township Board of Appeals and the board is thankful for her interest in serving the community.

The board as required by the Geauga County Budget Commission formally approved tax levies and certified them to the Geauga County Auditor for the 2023 tax year which is collected in 2024.

WGJRC Board Opening

The West Geauga Board of Education is seeking applicants to fill a position on the board of the West Geauga Joint Recreation District (West Geauga Commons).

For more information on the position and instructions to apply, visit www. westg.org under the News section. The position is open to any resident of the West Geauga community. The deadline to apply is Sept. 30.

The Aug. 31 special meeting of the Chester Township Board of Trustees began with brief conversation about House Bill 140 and the 2024 township budgets. The bill prescribes how levies are placed on the ballot, required language and guidance on what elected officials may or may not do or say pertaining to ballot issues, including levies.

Chairman Craig Richter summarized comments received from the Geauga County Budget Commission meeting on Aug. 21, where the township’s 2024 temporary appropriations were approved. Geauga County Auditor Charles Walder commented that the general fund and fire funds are OK, but the road and police funds are in desperate need of funds of which the trustees are aware. Walder commented that although Chester is the second largest township in the county, on a per capita basis for levy dollars, it is fifth or sixth, meaning its cheap to live in Chesterland.

The board and department heads recognize the need for and importance of stabilizing funding for the departments to help with better long-term planning and to meet community level of service expectations. Richter commented that an article in the Geauga Maple Leaf discussed the excess funds or carryover in the county budget and discussed potentially asking for a reallocation of inside millage back to townships.

At the end of the meeting, trustees entered executive session and upon return accepted the resignation of Nick Iacampo effective Aug. 28, 2023.

Next, there was general discussion about township buildings and developing long-range plans for managing these assets. The Chester Road Department garage is in very poor condition for housing the dump trucks. Preliminary cost estimates for a building replacement are being developed.

There was preliminary discussion by the board to consider the property and future of Fire Station No. 2 on Chillicothe Road. The property is currently zoned as a residential parcel and includes two structures, one of which is a house. Trustees will wait to learn additional information regarding similar values and comparables of local industrial parcels before any action is considered. The board is in general agreement that the parcel and structures should be sold, regardless of any potential decisions to rezone.
