Kirtland Cemetery’s Old Glory Now in Lights

One June 19, David Keatley, vice commander of the Barber-Williams American Legion Post 609, welcomed the community to the dedication of the newly-installed lighting for the American flag in the Kirtland Cemetery South.

“It is the universal custom to display the American flag only from sunrise to sunset, on buildings and on stationary flag staffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness,” Keatley said, citing the United States Flag Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 6.

Members of Boy Scout Troop 286 ceremoniously presented the flag. Keatley and the Scouts hoisted the flag and those in uniform saluted.

Legion member Seth Bryant then took the podium to present a short address interpreting the Pledge of Allegiance.

“As an individual, as part of this community, I am standing up to pledge and dedicate all that I am to give of myself, allegiance, my love, my devotion, to the flag, our standard, old glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever the flag waves, there ought to be respect, because those who have given their last full measure of devotion, that is a sacrifice which we ought to honor. ‘For which it stands’ — one nation, for we must be one — ‘under God,’ granting all people the freedom to worship how, where and what they may, even the freedom to worship not at all, for in our diversity, we seek unity that we might be ‘indivisible,’ incapable of being divided, for a house divided cannot stand. ‘With liberty,’ which is freedom, the right of power, to one’s life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Yes, ‘for all,’ which means it’s as much your country as it is mine, and everyone else’s and its principles and freedoms ought to be extended to all under the shadow of this flag,” Bryant passionately said.

The entire company rose to say the Pledge.

Mayor Doug Davidson, a member of American Legion Post 609, took the spotlight.

“I’d like to thank (Public Works Administrator) Carm Catania, (Cemetery Superintendent) Justin Gollin and David Arnold. Justin and David, in particular, take care of our cemeteries for us,” he said. “They’ve done a beautiful job getting set up for this as they do for Memorial Day, and (I’m) proud of the work that they do.”

“On Memorial Day, the hundreds of veterans are recognized with the help of those Scouts. They have to get the map from the city on each one of these veterans’ graves, which — there’s a Revolutionary War vet right here (Stephen Ames, 1762 – 1825, Pvt., 2nd NH Regiment). They go way back and they pay the proper respects and we’re thankful for that,” the mayor said.

He added, “It was Keith McCrory who used to live in a house just (in) this direction and he could see that flagpole from his house.

He took it on as a mission, as a leader, for this Post to get this flagpole lit. His whole family, his ‘legion family,’ and his ‘family family’ took it upon themselves — kids included — to go mailbox-to-mailbox and phone calls and in person and they made it happen. And I’m very proud of them and the Post.”

McCrory recounted to attendees the process of bringing the lighting plan to fruition.

After looking into it more, the American flag has not been flying at the cemetery for a long time,” he said. “Last May, with the help of Matt Santilli and Imperial Tree Services, the American Legion installed a solar light to illuminate the flag.”

That was effective during the summer, said McCrory, but winter provided insufficient sunlight to power the illumination.

More powerful and permanent solutions were considered, such as electricity, laser spotlights and even the relocation of the flagpole.

The Post reached out to the community via “snail mail,” social media fora, and ultimately, a GoFundMe account.

“The campaign took off immediately,” McCrory said. “We were able to raise $5,000 in six weeks. That was great. With over 130 donations — we had donations from as far away as Arizona and North Carolina.”

McCrory said the cause garnered donations from the Polish Legion of America, Lake County Marine Veterans Honor Guard, the Wendy Gardner Memorial Fund, Post 109

Amvets, the Kirtland Veterans Memorial, the Kirtland Area Service Council, Divine Word Church, the VFW Auxiliary Post 9295 and the George E. Hayward VFW of Charities 9295.

“I want to say a special ‘thank you’ to the residents of Kirtland. Your generosity has been wonderful and very touching,” said McCrory.

He echoed Davidson’s praise of Gollin and Arnold, thanking them, along with Mike Kost, of B.K. Electric and the Kiwanis Club of Kirtland.

“The Kiwanis donated their time on May 9, the day we installed the wire, and paid for the new paint job on the flagpole and the new pulley system,” McCrory said. “I would also like to thank the Boy Scouts for helping out, not only with this today, but with their support throughout the campaign. Finally, I wanted to thank my American Legion brothers for helping to work on this project.

“May the American flag always fly over the cemetery, over the individuals and especially the veterans, who are interred here,” he continued. “When you drive by, especially at night, take a look at the flag, and know that it was your dedication and your donations and your hard work that helped us light the American flag.”

BOE Names Interim Treasurer

At a special meeting June 29, Kirtland Schools Board of Education approved John Scott as interim treasurer of the school district after former Treasurer Dan Wilson recently announced he would not be renewing his contract.

Wilson, whose last day was June 30, is leaving the district to return his focus to Mentor Schools, where he was also serving as treasurer, as well as spend more time with his family.

“Growing family responsibilities require me to reduce my professional commitments and have resulted in my decision to not seek renewal of my treasurer contract,” Wilson added in an email to the Kirtland Chronicle.

“I am deeply appreciative of the wonderful opportunity the board of education gave me to be a part of the Kirtland local school district. I am proud of my efforts to support the board of education and superintendents in the strategic fiscal management of the school district.”

Wilson’s last day with Kirtland was June 30 and Scott began July 1. During the July transition period, Wilson will serve in an advisory capacity, he said.

The board will seek a permanent treasurer during this time, with a goal of appointing

the successful candidate in August, he added.

Scott’s “vast experience” with school districts will help guide Kirtland Schools through a “difficult financial period as the board and administration considers a variety of options to slow projected deficit spending,” said Superintendent Bill Wade in a statement.

Scott, of Seven Hills, will serve on a temporary basis until the board can appoint a replacement for Wilson, the district said in its press release.

Scott has more than 40 years of experience, most recently serving as treasurer for the Clearview Schools until retiring in 2013.

Since then, he has served as interim treasurer for Vermillion Schools, Elyria City Schools, Warrensville Heights Schools, East Cleveland Schools and Richmond Heights Schools, according to Kirtland Schools.

Scott began his career as an examiner with the State Auditor’s Office, performing state examinations of school districts and libraries in Cuyahoga, Lake and Lorain counties. He also served as treasurer for the Cuyahoga Valley Joint Vocational School District (now Cuyahoga Valley Career Center) and an assistant treasurer for Lorain City Schools.

At Lakewood Schools, he was a consultant for the treasurer and assumed the role of payroll/accounts supervisor.

Six Battle at Strawberry Festival Eating Contest Winner Joined Contest on a Whim

The annual strawberry shortcake-eating contest June 16 at 7 p.m. drew its usual crowd of spectators eager to see who could stuff their face with the most shortcakes in two minutes.

This year, Cleveland Heights resident Bob Carlson won the victor’s bragging rights, along with a $25 cash prize.

Challenging Carlson were participants Michael Alfieri, Bill Burkheimer, Alex Fellinger, Martin Hebebrand and James Lockwood.

After the contest, the “The Kirtland Chronicle” caught up with Carlson, known as “Coach Bob,” and his daughter, Hadley.

Carlson has coached gymnastics for six years at Lake Shore Dance and Gymnastics in Wilson Mills.

“I’ve coached so many kids in Kirtland and if they ever heard this, they’re just going to be like, ‘Coach Bob! You won the eating contest!’… I coach some Kirtland kids and I think it’s kind of funny.”

Carlson said he decided “last minute” to enter the contest.

“They said it was strawberry shortcake.

I love strawberry shortcake, so I would do it for fun,” he said.

Carlson said he had never before eaten competitively, nor had he thought he would win.

When asked if he would continue to eat competitively, he said, “No. Maybe. I don’t know” and then laughed.

Last year’s winner, Ivan “The Avocado” Mendoza, did not return this year to defend his title.

That was fun, wasn’t it? The 59th edition of the Kirtland Kiwanis Strawberry Festival is behind us and we think it was the best one yet! Do you agree? Although putting together a fourday festival is a big task that requires many, many hours of planning, we have a lot fun doing it. It is our biggest fundraiser of the year that allows us to do so many wonderful things in our community. This year’s festival Submitted by was an overwhelming Stan Krulc success (again) thanks to many people, groups and organizations. A big THANK YOU to all who helped. We can feel the love and support the community has for our festival. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We have already started planning next year’s festival and we think it will be our best one yet. Save June 13 through June 16 on your calendar for 2019.

Yard, Bake & Book Sale

Sign up for the Friends of the Kirtland Public Library Annual Community Yard, Bake and Book Sale, held on the front lawn of the Kirtland Public Library.

Each year there are a large variety of goods for sale from approximately 30 families. The cost for a 12-by-12-foot space is $25.

There also is a Kids’ Corner, where kids can buy a space for $5 and sell their own stuff.

The number of Kids’ Corner spaces is limited.

The Friends will sponsor a bake sale with lots of sweet treats and the book sale is held in the Book Cellar (in the basement) and has plenty of books and audio books.

This sale is a great way to find treasures or perhaps you would like to sell some things that you no longer use. The yard sale has a lot of foot traffic and plenty of parking. The Friends do the advertising for you and you don’t need to worry about a permit.

“It is a very scientific event because of the way the contestants approach the shortcakes,” Bodmer said. “The most ‘efficient’ way to compete is to dig right in with your hands and mash the berries and biscuit, and then drink it. Pretty messy, but efficient if you wish to compete. One year, we had a young lady who, when the event began, just sat there and slowly enjoyed her shortcake.

That was great — and she did not get covered with berry juice.”

The Kirtland High School honors choir, under the direction of choir director and senior class advisor Suzanna Adkins, performed during the Class of 2018’s commencement exercises June 3 at Divine Word Catholic Church.

KHS Graduates its 120th Class Staff Report Kirtland High School’s class of 2018 graduated June 3, beginning their service at the Divine Word Catholic Church, 8100 Eagle Rd. in Kirtland.

The graduates-to-be held yellow roses, the school’s flower, and walked into the church to Purcell’s “Trumpet Voluntary.”

Divine Word’s priest, Dave Woost, started the proceedings with his invocation. Carole Clutter, of the Kirtland Area Service Council, delivered the address and the Kirtland honors choir, under the direction of choir director and senior class advisor Suzanna Adkins, presented “I’ll Be There, Pure Imagination” and the traditional “Irish Blessing.”

Woost offered a benediction and the class recessed out to Purcell’s “Trumpet Tune.”

The community moved to Lakeland Community College for the graduation proper as students processed in to Edward Elgar’s ubiquitous “Pomp and Circumstance Number 1 in D-Major,” for which band director Tom Dingeldein conducted the Kirtland High School band.

On the platform sat Kirtland Schools Superintendent Bill Wade, high school Principal Dr. Lynn Campbell, high school Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Matt Paul, middle school Principal Scott Amstutz, elementary school Principal Chad VanArnhem, school board members Tim Cosgrove, Tom Meyer, Kathryn Talty and Jonathan Withrow, and keynote speaker, 2008 Kirtland graduate Joe Pavlisko.

Campbell offered the welcome and presentation of the graduating class. Next, Wade spoke, finishing with his introduction of Pavlisko, who addressed the class.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gerry, of Kirtland, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Riley N. Carpenter to Christopher M. Frato Jr., son of Christopher and Deborah Frato, of Russell Township.

The bride-to-be is a 2013 Kirtland High graduate and a 2016 cum laude graduate of Ohio University. She is now a Quality Improvement Project Manager at the Cleveland Clinic.

The prospective groom is a 2007 Benedictine graduate and a 2011 University of Akron Police Academy graduate. He now works for the City of Euclid.

A September 2019 wedding is planned.

Both families are overjoyed and pray that God may continue to bless them with love and happiness as they begin their life together as one.
