Cardinal Hires Superintendent, Interim Treasurer By Ann Wishart ann@karlovecmedia.com During a lengthy meeting June 8 that included three executive sessions, Cardinal Schools Board of Education hired a new superintendent and an interim treasurer. Board member Linda Smallwood said Belinda Grassi, of Concord, a mem- Cunningham ber of the Riverside Schools Board of Education and former Edgemont School District treasurer, will be providing part- Grassi time fiscal coverage for the district until a full-time treasurer can be hired. “It is a full-time job, but it is so hard to find a treasurer right now,” Smallwood said, adding the district has started a search to fill the position, which will pay about $125,000 a year. In a text, district Treasurer Julia Rozsnyai, whose last day at Cardinal is June 20, said she will come back on weekends to help Grassi with the fiscal year closing. Smallwood said Rozsnyai’s tenure with the district improved Cardinal’s credit rating. The board also hired Jack Cunningham, 51, who has been with See Cardinal • Page 4

Board Asks for Figures On ESSER Fund Spending By Ann Wishart ann@karlovecmedia.com Cardinal Schools Board of Education postponed its plans to build porticoes at two schools following questions posed at the June 22 meeting. Board member Wendy Anderson said spending at least $200,000 of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds for porticoes might be premature until the board gets a firm grip on the cost of the proposed new bus maintenance facility and parking lot at the high school. “There’s a lot of questions surrounding that project that make me leery of going on. We haven’t seen bids for the parking lot or the (garage) yet,” she said. Anderson also said it appears the portico projects will require an additional $26,500 to check out

utilities and determine what is in the ground under the projected construction. Board President Linda Smallwood said the size of the garage has already been decreased by 2,000 square feet. The original version was beyond what is really needed for the purpose, she said. “We’re going to draw up a new plan and estimate what the new building is going to cost,” Smallwood said, noting costs of construction have gone up. The district has until 2024 to use the ESSER III funds, she said. Anderson also asked about the old garage behind the Cardinal Intermediate School building that is in the process of being sold to All Around Children, a preschool and daycare company. “Before we get into porticoes, I’m really concerned about the bus

garage project,” she said, asking if AAC is going to pay for the demolition of the garage. “We haven’t really established that,” Smallwood said. While demo of the structure may not be expensive, board member Kristen Klepper said there are other considerations. “It’s the removal of the debris that costs the money,” she said. Anderson said the board previously allotted $250,000 for the parking lot south of the high school and $800,000 for the bus garage. It has since become apparent that won’t be enough for the projects, she said. Smallwood said the district will be saving money elsewhere on projects, which are not costing as much as originally estimated. See Schools • Page 4
