We are happy to announce the recent hiring of Family & Local History Specialists Lynn and Melissa! They both work in the Anderson Allyn Room at our Chardon Branch, which contains resources such as township pictorial histories, microfilm, cemetery indexes, duplicate tax records and maps, school yearbooks, over four hundred oral histories, thousands of genealogy family group sheets related to Geauga County, and much more. These resources are invaluable for researching local history and family genealogies. We also offer electronic resources such as Ancestry, Heritage Quest, Family Search, Fold 3, and others. Lynn, Melissa, and our GCPL staff and volunteers are happy to help you.
To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root.
~
Chinese ProverbHow did you come to have an interest in Family & Local History?

Lynn: Growing up in Maryland, our home was five miles from Saint Mary’s City, the first settlement in the state. Because of the historic homes in the area, I developed a love of early American history and architecture. Learning about the architecture of the homes necessarily lead to learning about the families that lived in them.
As an adult, I moved to Ohio. I volunteered at the Lake County History Center and eventually took over digitizing the collection and overseeing volunteers. While there, I learned that genealogy is the backbone of all local history; objects in a collection are primarily representations of the stories of people.
I completed my Master’s degree in Library and Information Science this past spring with an emphasis in museum studies and archival preservation. I look forward to applying my love of family and local history and my knowledge of collection management to make the Anderson Allyn Room collection more accessible to GCPL patrons.
Melissa: Twenty-five years ago, my grandma Gray gave me a box of old pictures she thought I might like. In the box was a photo of an old lady with haunting eyes wearing a babushka. Grandma told me this was her grandma. And that was it. I had to learn about this woman and find her life story. That gifted photo started me on my genealogy journey, and I have not stopped researching family lines since. Local history is so important in finding the stories of our ancestors and libraries are goldmines of information. I hold a BBA from Kent State, and am also a member of First Families of Ohio, Pioneer Families of Trumbull County, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Society and the Fuller Society.
What are the typical requests that you come across in your day-to-day work?
Lynn: The Anderson Allyn Room receives research requests by email, by phone, in person and by postal mail. By far the most common request is for copies of obituaries, but many other types of research requests come in regularly.
Why are the services offered by GCPL’s Genealogy Department/The Anderson Allyn room of value to the community?

Melissa: It is so important to remember those whose dreams, hard work, decisions, and sacrifices helped to create this great country. Small-town history is vital in this makeup. Geauga County has such a rich history of incredible people –common folk and the leaders- that need to be remembered. A lot of the early families to this area were from the New England area. The Anderson Allyn Room holds a wealth of Geauga County family line information – and we keep adding to it!
For more great responses from Lynn and Melissa, check our blog at www.GeaugaLibrary.net. Or, better yet, stop in and see them!

The Chagrin Valley Herb Society (CVHS) was founded in 1989. In 1992, Kathy Catani, current CVHS President, designed an herb garden at our Bainbridge Branch. Its culinary, blue and silver, literary, and potpourri gardens invited patrons (and pollinators!) to our library with its stunning, colorful design in the French intensive, or postage stamp, style. A couple of years later, thanks to a generous donation from the Kysela family, a tea house with seating and an adjoining all-season perennial garden were added, in addition to fencing and an entry garden.
When it came time to plan for our new Bainbridge Branch in 2017, the CVHS was involved with the GCPL Board during the entire process. Garden construction is underway, with hopes of completion by Spring 2022. The new garden, located on the south side of the parking lot from Snyder Rd., contains three garden areas. The tea house will stand at its center and is to be erected when funds are secured. The West Garden, which mimics the original garden beds, will be easily seen from the conference rooms inside the Bainbridge Branch. The East Garden, near Snyder Rd., will feature a butterfly, medicinal, two fragrance touch and sniff, and four perennial beds. The goal for a final addition is a storybook garden to tie everything together in a park-like setting.
Funding for the new garden came from several sources. GCPL donated most of the funds for the West Garden and the sprinkler system. The Friends of the Bainbridge Library generously donated $10,000, which has paid for much of the East Garden. Anne and Ike Tripp donated $1500 toward the tea house. Donations were also made by Auburn Pointe Greenhouse and several others. GCPL, the CVHS, and our community thank those whose generosity helped to make this garden a reality.
When asked about further funding, Catani outlines CVHS’ future plans, saying, “We have just initiated a fund-raising campaign to raise $30,000 to rebuild the tea house, establish a sandstone path through the tea house to the sidewalk, put up intermittent fencing, and other borders/ protective elements, along with plants, benches, trellises and signage. Donations may be made directly to the Chagrin Valley Herb Society or on our Go Fund Me Campaign on Facebook.”
Once complete, the garden will be totally dependent on the CVHS popular yearly herb sale. The next sale is planned for Sat., May 14, 2022. Check www.GeaugaLibrary.net for the finalized date. CVHS’ modest $15 per year dues cover the exceptional monthly programs.

When asked about CVHS’ mission, Catani states, “The Chagrin Valley Herb Society studies and promotes an interest in herbs and keeps and maintains a public garden. Our garden has been widely used and enjoyed by Library patrons and staff. We work with Library staff on some events and partner with the Kenston High School Giving Garden Club. We are a sensory garden. Art, color and design, recipes, and history all have a part in what we do.”
The CVHS has about forty members, and they meet on the third Friday of the month at our Bainbridge Branch and other area locations at 12:30 p.m. Prospective members should contact CVHS through the library, on Facebook, or their website, www.ChagrinValleyHerbsociety.org. No special knowledge is needed, only an interest in gardening.
“Our members are amazing and talented in many ways. They are caring and supportive of our garden and of one another. Meetings are very interactive, informative, and fun,” Catani states.
Consider joining today and be sure to visit the garden this spring and beyond!
