Follow your library on
This June the library will take you to Siam, Bali Hai, and help you to appreciate that it's “Summertime and the Livin' Is Easy” by way of the American Library Association (ALA) exhibit A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 19101965! Only 55 libraries across the U.S. were selected to host this exhibit. Proposals were submitted in January, and Bainbridge Library is excited to be one of the chosen sites. The exhibit itself consists of eight colorful double-sided panels filled with text and photographs highlighting the spirit of this musical era.
Americans have always responded to the wit, passion, and sophistication of the ballads, dance tunes, jazz numbers, and showstoppers that make up the Great American Songbook. Songs like, “As Time
Goes By,” “It Had to Be You,” and “Over the Rainbow” have captivated generations of audiences and remain beloved musical icons of American popular culture.
Kenston High School Varsity Jazz celebrated the eye-catching new exhibit when it opened at the Bainbridge Library on May 19 with lively songs that were written before their parents were born. These are the songs that are timeless, memorable, significant, and inter-generational. The music embraces all ages whether you are from the “greatest generation,” a boomer, a gen y, a gen x or a millennial. The best musical artists of the mid 1900’s combined a genius for melody, a talent for pairing melody with the perfect words, and an ability to connect with a wide audience.
A remarkably high percentage of these songwriters were Jewish, from families that had immigrated to America in the 1800s or fled pogroms and persecution in Europe at the turn of the century. Using lively and striking images from Broadway musicals, classic films, posters, and personal collections, A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs, 1920-1965 tells their story.
Irving Berlin, son of a cantor (religious official who leads the singing in a synagogue or congregation), had no formal music training. He played the piano in only one key, but he was one of the few composers who were talented at writing both music and lyrics. Berlin’s “God Bless America,” “White Christmas” and “Easter Parade” have become American anthems. Jerome Kern composed the melodies for some of the world’s most revered love songs—“Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” and along with Dorothy Fields the saucy “A Fine Romance.” The King and I, Oklahoma, and South Pacific are only a few of the enduring American musicals created by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein.
A Fine Romance was curated by David Lehman and developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture, and ideas, and the American Library

Revson Foundation, the Righteous Persons Foundation, the David Berg Foundation, an anonymous donor, and Tablet: A New Read on Jewish Life A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs is also a book by David Lehman, published by Nextbook/Schocken.
The Bainbridge Library received funding from the Friends of the Bainbridge Library and the Bainbridge Women’s Club in support of this exhibit. New DVDs and CDs representative of the exhibit’s musicals, movies, and songs have been added to the library’s collection so you can enjoy the music and productions at home.
The Bainbridge Library is offering a variety of programs to enhance the exhibit experience, and all are free and open to the public. Bill Rudman will present the grand opening for the exhibit with "Jewish Songwriters United: Their Impact on the American Musical" as an afterhours special event on Friday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Rudman is Cleveland’s expert on Broadway and screen musicals. He hosts the weekly Footlight Parade on radio station WCLV 104.9 (see www.wclv. com) in Cleveland. He also runs The Musical Theater Project which documents and celebrates the American musical experience (www.musicaltheaterproject.org ).
The Jewish songwriters in the Fine Romance exhibit are his specialty.
Larry Sheir, cantor at Temple Beth Israel, will present the grand finale “From Tin Pan Alley to Broadway” on Tuesday, June 28 at 7:00 p.m. He will explain the background and perform the songs that define the personalities included in this exhibit. In addition to serving as cantor, Mr. Sheir is active in American musical theater and American musical cabaret. He has appeared in such productions as The Secret Garden, Music Man, Rags,
as well as And the World Goes Round. Voice lessons have been a part of his routine since age five, and he has been a student of the particular genre found in this exhibit since he was a child. This is his passion!
On Friday afternoons throughout June the Bainbridge Library will show movie musicals that showcase the songwriters included in the exhibit. A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs will be on display until July 1. These programs are in collaboration with the Beachwood Library (concert June 19), Shaker Library (hosts exhibit July-August), and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage (offering additional summer events). Bring your parents and grandparents to relive the jubilation of this segment of 20th century of American Music.
