Each one has been chosen either because it touches the Gecko Press funny bone or because it is a book that makes us go ‘Ah’ when we get to the end. I hope you will find here books you will want to keep forever (we try to make our books strong enough to last that long). Maybe you and a child will get to know at least one of these books by heart. You might read it aloud or read it to yourself or learn to read with it…

of curiously good books We have new stories from some of our favourite writers and illustrators who are at the heart of Gecko Press: Joy Cowley, Barbara Else, Paul Beavis, Ole Könnecke, Dorothée de Monfreid, Wolf Erlbruch, Ulf Stark, Ulf Nilsson and Leo Timmers. New for small children is a bestselling board book, originally from France, called Help! The Wolf is Coming! (unless you manage to throw him off the cliff!). And don’t miss the funny, warmhearted, first-time picture book from David Barrow, awarded most promising graduate of the Cambridge School of Illustration in the UK this year. Gecko Press is proud to publish Have You Seen Elephant?—a very Gecko Press sort of a book, for anyone with a finely tuned sense of absurdity.

These are our books for the very young, up to about age 2. They are simple and eye-catching, built around strong illustrations, and ideal to share with babies and toddlers.

These are illustrated stories for children who are beginning to read on their own, mostly ages 5–8. They are accessible without being simple, and have lots of humour and lively illustrations. Many are lovely to read to children both older and younger than this age range.

These younger picture books are lovely to read with children aged 2–4. They have very strong illustrations, with lots to explore and talk about in the stories too. They include first words and numbers, and subjects close to preschoolers’ hearts – like cake and sleep and making things go BANG.

Picture books

Our picture books span the largest age range, because they can be enjoyed by children (and adults) of all ages. Mostly they are read by ages 4–8. All of our picture books have strong stories, and illustrations that reward layers of looking. They are made for reading over and over again.

29

Our novels are for more confident readers and bookworms, ages 8–14. These include comedy, complexity and rollicking adventure. Like the chapter books, children of all ages will also enjoy hearing them read aloud. Our non-fiction books are beautifully illustrated and often suitable for children ages 7 and over. They can be enjoyed by the whole family, and make great gifts.

Age guidelines These age suggestions are a guideline only. No two children are the same, so it’s hard to prescribe any book for a particular age—the same way that we all love different stories. Many of our books are enjoyed by children and adults of all ages. All Gecko Press books have perfectly formed stories and illustrations, each one published with care. Our website gives you more information, reviews and page samples to help you choose. Choosing books is an adventure, and we wish you the joy of picking the perfect book!

Viewed from a distance of seventy-plus years, 1943 was history soup, everything mixed up, and it was difficult to separate reality from what he had read or been told. One event, though, was crystal clear and refused to be forgotten. He’d never talked about it to the others, not Meg and certainly not Betty, but he didn’t want to be buried with the truth. Someone should know what happened that winter day. ‘I spent all afternoon greedily gobbling it up, then ... I read it again to slowly savor every word. Recommended.’ Around the Bookshops (NZ)
