OUR BACKYARD, OUR COMMUNITY
IN THIS EDITION
From the local florist to your neighbourhood butcher, small businesses in our community have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. As some businesses have closed due to stage three restrictions, there are also many that have pivoted to contactfree home delivery, click and collect and other online initiatives to continue serving the community safely. Green Mumma Organics in Rippleside (pictured above) is delivering essential groceries to suburbs throughout Greater Geelong – a service helping to minimise the need to leave your home. For those that can, supporting

businesses in our backyard helps local people, industries and Geelong’s economy. Much of this support can even be done from the comfort of your lounge room. Whatever support you can contribute – no matter how large or small – it all makes a difference. You may like to tell someone you’re thinking of them by sending some flowers. Or get your dinner delivered from that restaurant you’ve always
wanted to try. Your support may also be sharing a local business’ offer with your friends and family online.

DEPUTY MAYOR’S MESSAGE
YOUR COUNCILLORS
This year most certainly hasn’t gone as planned. The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened the community’s health and livelihood, and the Greater Geelong Council has channelled all of its focus into providing support. It’s been heartening to witness the resilience and kindness that community members have displayed time and time again. Council recognises the hardship our community is facing and the immense stress that comes with constant uncertainty about infection and restrictions and of course for many in our community the loss of a job and livelihood. When the pandemic hit earlier this year, we announced $5.6 million worth of funding and initiatives as immediate relief. Now, our focus is on driving the social and economic recovery for the medium to long-term. Our latest package of support measures, worth almost $5.2 million, is up and running. Businesses have been hit hard, which is why we’re funding the continuation of our Small Business Expert Support Program. Hundreds of businesses have already taken up the offer of free mentoring and expert advice about financial management, digital marketing and human resources. We’ve also launched the ‘It’s Our Backyard’ campaign to encourage the community to support local businesses, workforce and industries, where you can. We can all help Geelong to recover and grow. Our expanded 2020–21 Community Grants program, worth more than $4.33 million, launched in July to support local organisations, groups, events and

projects. Many grants are still open, so visit www.geelongaustralia.com.au/ grants to find out more. We know our creatives, who give so much joy to the community, are also doing it tough. So we set aside $490,000 for training, employment opportunities and grants for the heritage, arts and culture sector. This was on top of $20,000 from a previous package. These support measures were part of council’s $560 million-plus ‘recovery’ budget, which is strategically focused on driving investment, supporting jobs and delivering much-needed services. A good example of this is our biggest capital works program in the City’s history, worth $160 million. As you can see, getting the community out the other end of this crisis is paramount for this council group. And finally, a reminder to keep your physical distance, practise good hygiene, follow the restrictions in place and, if you’re unwell; please, stay home and get tested. Do it for yourself, your loved ones and your community.

WORKS
CIVIC PRECINCT BOOSTS THE LOCAL ECONOMY Local employment and the economy are benefitting from the recent commencement of construction on the Civic Precinct. Project partners, Quintessential Equity (QE), and builder, Watpac, set a target of 60 per cent local procurement for construction of the precinct at 137 Mercer Street, Geelong, which will result in around 900 jobs for local businesses and suppliers over the course of construction.
Once complete, the new office will save $3 million per year in rent and energy costs alone.
Part of the precinct will be dedicated to a new purpose-built, energyefficient building for City employees, which will allow us to consolidate seven offices into one.
Construction is expected to be completed by mid-2022.
An additional commercial building in the precinct, owned by QE, will increase commercial leasing opportunities in the CBD, with space for a further 900 office workers.
