Welcome to the Winter edition of the Love Central Geelong Fun Guide! This is your guide to all the best activities happening for the Winter School Holidays in Central Geelong – Saturday 24 June – Sunday 9 July 2023.

The program is a collection of activities, events and exhibitions for children 3-16 years, delivered by Central Geelong businesses and the City of Greater Geelong.

WE THE MAKERS FOR FAMILIES

Pick up your We the Makers family exhibition guide and take a journey through the exhibition. Explore the unique outfits of 20 emerging fashion designers from across Australia and around the world who are leading the way in sustainable fashion, innovation, and creativity.

Then drop into The Style Studio on Level 2. Take inspiration from the We the Makers designers to design your own sustainable outfit for your Peg Doll or create a whole new look for yourself using the vintage garments on the clothes rack. Make sure you take a walk along the runway or a photo in front of the We The Makers mural.

JEWELLERY DESIGN WITH EMILY RASTAS

Join local artist and designer Emily Rastas for a unique jewellery making workshop where you’ll be provided with an array of jewellery findings and reclaimed beads/buttons to create one-ofa-kind pieces. You will be guided through the process of making stunning and sustainable jewellery. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced jewellery maker, this workshop is a great opportunity to explore your creativity and make something truly unique.

LEARN TO SPIN AND FELT

Feeling crafty? Discover how wool fibres bind together to make your own yarns and felts using raw wool tops. Try your hand at a spinning wheel or drop spindle then make a felted bookmark, wall hanging or necklace to take home.

GEELONG WOMEN’S STREET ART PROGRAM

LEARN TO KNIT AND PLAIT

In this beginner-friendly class, you will learn all the basic skills needed to knit and plait up a storm. You’ll cast on and cast off, master knit and purl stitches and how to read a pattern. Want an extra challenge? We’ll all work together to make a giant plaited rope. Can we make it go around the studio?

Welcome to the vibrant world of the Geelong Women’s Street Art Program! We invite you to join us in celebrating the extraordinary talent of female artists in Central Geelong. This special public art project, supported by the City of Greater Geelong’s Arts and Culture team, aims to highlight the incredible talents of women artists and their meaningful contributions to our public spaces.

Pause and appreciate the myriad of murals strewn across Central Geelong. These inspiring pieces offer a glimpse into the artistic journey and unique perspectives of some of Victoria’s best women artists.

Rex has a big heart, but very small hands. A fun and enjoyable paint with the use of cool blues with splashes of orange. Kids, join us to create your very own dino. Our kids sessions go for 90 minutes and are designed for ages 7+. This class is a great way for your child to express their creativity and learn painting techniques.

SID THE SLOTH

Come ‘hang’ out in our studio with Sid the sloth as we paint our way through the bushes to find him! Our kids’ sessions go for 90 minutes and are designed for ages 7+. This class is a great way for your child to express their creativity and learn a thing or two about painting techniques.

NEON NIGHTS: OLLIE

Let’s go under the sea and UV lights! This glowing Octopus will have the kids wiggling with excitement watching their artwork come to life with fluro colour. Perfect for your next family day out or leave the kids with us and you can sip on a cocktail at home!

Fly away with creativity in our new butterfly artwork! Our kids’ sessions run for 90 minutes and are designed for ages 7+. They are a great way to get the kids creative and keep them busy!

FAMILY MAGIC 2023: AUSTRALIAN BALLET WORKSHOPS

Explore the world of dance through warm-ups, dance exercises, and choreographic games.

You’ll learn about The Story of Pomi and Gobba, and hear about things such as costume design, music, and storytelling. Expect to move, dance, have fun and be creative! No ballet experience is required. There are three available sessions per age group across the 4-6 July. Parental/guardian supervision is required for all ages.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times – guardians are not required to purchase a ticket.

In addition to attending your workshop, your ticket also gains you free access to the performance of Pomi and Gobba by The Australian Ballet. There are three performance times to choose from:

MOPA MAKERS: MONSTERS!

During each session at MoPA Geelong these winter holidays, Children are invited to create their own MoPA Monster; a multimodal paper puppet inspired by their own personality and uniqueness. Children will express their ideas and make meaning, while developing thinking skills and lifelong learning dispositions such as curiosity, persistence and creativity. With assistance from MoPA’s educators, visitors can get creative with a range of templates to build their one-of-a-kind monster, and will end up with their very own moving masterpiece to inspire further play and exploration when they take it home.
