SECURING OUR FUTURE
COLLEGE VISION The Geelong College is an innovative and caring community of learners committed to making a positive difference to an ever changing world.
COLLEGE MISSION The Geelong College is a Uniting Church co-educational day and boarding school that creates outstanding opportunities for its community of students, encouraging and inspiring all to be positive contributors to our world.
THE GEELONG COLLEGE FOUNDATION Securing our Future In the 21st Century, the needs of education change rapidly and constantly. To continue to be an innovative community of learners we much be in a position to anticipate, lead and respond to positive change. The Geelong College Foundation was incorporated in 1987 to preserve, develop and secure the financial future of The Geelong College. Since its inception, the Foundation has relied on the generosity of the wider College community (parents, past parents, grandparents and alumni) and as a result of this philanthropic and forward looking culture, we have been able to contribute significantly to the life of the College. The College needs buildings to accommodate growing student numbers; play and recreation spaces to encourage all students to learn outside the classroom; and modern technology and equipment to help students develop and understand their place in a fast-paced global community. The generosity of our members has helped to provide state-of-the-art facilities at the College, including the Keith Humble Centre for Music and the Performing Arts – where students learn to be expressive, creative and confident, and The Geelong College Recreation Centre – where year-round sporting activities have a positive impact on self-esteem, mental health and, relationships, and can help develop an understanding of working as a team. Our College welcomes the financial support of all in our community to continue to develop, and to remain one of Australia’s outstanding schools.
FOUNDATION VISION AND MISSION The Geelong College Foundation works closely with The Geelong College and its governing Council to ensure our students are provided with the best possible opportunities to excel and leave the College as well-rounded young adults who can contribute positively to the broader community. The Mission of the Foundation is to: • Invite past students, past parents and friends to become members of the Foundation and to participate more actively and effectively in supporting and assisting the College • To encourage the making of gifts including bequests for the benefit of the College or the Foundation • To encourage financial support of the College to improve the educational offerings provided including the employment of teaching staff with special skills
FOUNDATION STRUCTURE AND GOVERNANCE The Geelong College Foundation is managed by a dedicated professional Board which meets four times per year and works closely with the College Council and the Principal. The Board comprises of the President, two Vice-Presidents, and up to six other Board members. The Board is supported by the Director of Development, Mrs Joyce Taylor. Under the Constitution the following persons have the right to attend Board meetings in a non-voting capacity: • Chairman of The Geelong College Council (or nominee) • Principal of The Geelong College The Director of Community Relations and the Director of Development normally attend Board meetings as invited participants. It is clear from the above that the Foundation operates independently of, although closely connected with, The Geelong College. The Foundation seeks to grow its corpus in the longer term but also makes significant contributions to The Geelong College on an annual basis such as scholarships and assistance with building projects and maintenance. In addition to its bequest program, the Foundation also runs the College’s Annual Campaign which allows every member of the College community to support the school financially. • Please note, donations to the College Foundation Fund are not tax deductible.
THE BUILDING FUND The Building Fund is the main vehicle used for providing support to the College. It provides funds for the construction of new buildings and the maintenance of our older buildings. The College normally receives no funds from the State or Federal Governments for buildings so this responsibility lies with the College and the Foundation. Donations made to the Building Fund are tax deductible. Since the Foundation was founded in 1987, the Building Fund has supported the following projects, all of which have greatly added to the physical facilities at the school: • • • • •

THE SCHOLARSHIP FUND Contributing to our Scholarship Fund directly supports students and their families. Scholarship students lead learning culture and benefit from the wide range of educational opportunities offered by the College. Thanks to the generosity of donors to the Scholarship Fund, we are able to assist outstanding students who may not otherwise be able to attend the College and contribute to our community. Scholarships fall into two categories: • Unrestricted – used to support students at the discretion of the Principal. • Restricted – used according to the criteria set by the donor in consultation with the Principal. Donations made to the Scholarship Fund are tax deductible.
THE MORRISON SOCIETY BEQUEST PROGRAM Named after Dr George Morrison MA (1830-1898), the first Principal of The Geelong College. He was a man who combined outstanding scholastic achievement with business ability and his term as Principal spanned a remarkable 37 years from 1861 to 1898. There are many reminders of the Morrison family’s legacy at the College including the initials “GM” inscribed in the stone above the main entrance, Norman Morrison Memorial Hall and Morrison House. The Morrison Society is the latest link, looking back at the beginning and forward to the future of this great school. A bequest in your Will to The Geelong College or The Geelong College Foundation is a gift for the future development of the College and the education and opportunities for future generations of Collegians. A notified bequest bestows membership of The Morrison Society and recognises your association with the College. Such a bequest can include: • Specific items such as artworks, jewellery, antiques, money, shares. • A percentage or proportion of your total Estate. • The remainder of your Estate after provision has been made for family and other beneficiaries. • Your whole Estate. When making or updating your Will we would be happy to discuss any provision which you may consider in favour of The Geelong College or The Geelong College Foundation. OUR LATEST COLLABORATION THE CENTRE FOR LEARNING, RESEARCH AND INNOVATION The Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation (CLRI) aims to create outstanding professional development opportunities, in the first instance for The Geelong College’s staff, students and parents, and then more broadly for teachers and schools in the region. The Leadership Team was formed in 2014 to realise that vision. CLRI recognises learning as an active, dynamic behaviour that emerges from interactions between the human brain and the social world. Its community of learners are committed to understanding the science of learning and the art of teaching. CLRI is supported by The Geelong College Foundation and Deakin University. An Advisory Committee guides the planning of the Centre’s programs and identifies opportunities for research and development.
