Both programmes provide an internationally recognised qualification for entry into tertiary education worldwide.
2012
YEAR 12 RESULTS
The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the certificate that the majority of Victorian students receive on satisfactory completion of their secondary education. In the VCE, a student’s performance in each subject is measured by a study score between 0 and 50 which indicates their relative position in comparison to other students. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a two-year programme that was created by the International School of Geneva. In the IB, students must complete assessment in six academic subjects which are graded on a scale of 1 to 7. A maximum of three bonus points are awarded according to the combined standard of a student’s Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay work.
MEASURING SUCCESS Tertiary places are decided by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), which is a percentile ranking of each student’s position determined by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) in steps of 0.05 ranging from 0.00 to 99.95.
CRICOS 00143G
For VCE results, the ATAR is based upon the study score for English and the student’s next three best subjects, plus an increment of 10% for the next two best subjects. Study scores are scaled by VTAC to allow for cross-study variations and to ensure that each subject contributes equally to the ATAR. For IB results, a conversion formula is created by the Australasian Conference of Tertiary Admissions Centres (ACTAC) to achieve a notional ATAR. The conversion formula is primarily determined by analysis of General Achievement Test (GAT) results achieved by IB and VCE students undertaking similar subjects.
