INTRODUCTION — PRIMED 2021
FROM THE HEAD OF VISUAL ARTS I am most delighted to present to you the PRIMED 2021 Exhibition Catalogue. The catalogue includes the works of 50 students involved in IB Visual Arts, VCE Media, VCE Studio Arts and/or VCE Visual Communication Design Like last year, the publication takes both printed and electronic form. While the tumultuous character of 2021 prevented us from organising the customary physical exhibition, not presenting the work of our graduate students was not an option. Adopting a defiant stance against the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff of the Visual Department, bolstered by the success of the 2021 Coriobald online exhibition, decided to work around imposed restrictions and create a virtual PRIMED exhibition. Its digital format allows us to share the moving images– videos produced by Media and Studio Arts students– as well as movies of some of the three-dimensional works.

INTRODUCTION — PRIMED 2021
The title of the show is not accidental.
PRIMED, according to the Oxford dictionary, means “prepared for a situation so that an individual knows what to do, especially after being given special information”. The exhibition showcases projects of students who, over the past two years, have been involved with the Visual Arts. They have received their “special information” to take them to the next level. Whether they will choose to pursue Art and Design education further or not is at this stage uncertain. The feedback from the students who have done the subjects in the past would suggest that they will, however, definitively bring along new perspectives and energy for creativity to any academic field. In a tumultuous world, the role of Art and Design has become even more central to our students’ lives, whether they have realised it or not. As a number of their works show, many “prepared for a situation” moved deeper into their inner thoughts and imagination, the vast space of inspiration that ordinarily is perhaps neglected. Staying creative – painting, sculpting, designing, photographing and video making – offered them a chance to move around freely in a fictional world in a way that was impossible in reality. Examination of the students’ statements reveals that Art matters. In times of global crisis, Art and Design helps to understand the world around us. It allows us to process, voice and express our experiences, and to bring people and ideas together. It shows that art making is a tool for stress reduction and wellbeing as it helps to process trauma, express difficult feelings, and work through experiences. Lastly, Art allows us to communicate from afar, to generate positivity, appreciation and hope during uncertain times. This is perhaps best represented in a statement by Visual Arts student Annie Mitchell (Yr12 Ga), who in her Curatorial Rationale wrote: “I hope that by viewing my exhibition the audience will feel optimistic in our current isolated state”, that her work will bring “joy and calmness; the emotions and escape I felt while creating my pieces.” The power of Art and Design, the importance of bringing people together, inspiring, and soothing, has been made emphatically obvious during the past 24 months. Luckily, the School recognises the significance of Art as a core part of education and the national curriculum, and our students are given an opportunity to experiment with different media and materials in a variety of purpose-built venues like the darkroom, painting, printing and ceramics studios or the computer lab (known as ‘MacLab’). They also have the rare opportunity to observe and work alongside leading contemporary Australian artists.
6
Looking through the various sections of this exhibition/catalogue, arranged according to the four Visual Arts subjects taught at year 12 level, it is easy to see the effects of such “priming”. The artworks and designs on display are a culmination of sweat and tears shed over the course of the students’ journey. As they advanced, and especially through the last two years of their study, the students were developing their investigative, analytical and reflecting skills. They strove towards an appropriate form and the highest level of resolution to attain full ownership of their artistic development. Furthermore, they also worked effervescently to respond to specific briefs and/or self-guided challenges.
INTRODUCTION — PRIMED 2021
In Term 1, we were lucky to host one of the three planned Artists in Residence that were to enhance our programme in 2021. Lily Mae Martin stayed with us for nine days at Corio; the visits of the other two artists had to be postponed until 2022. Ms Martin not only generously shared her knowledge and skills but, importantly, spoke about the value of experimentation, resilience, learning from mistakes, determination to succeed, perseverance, humility and, most of all, hard, honest work for her creative practice. This has indeed provided further “special information”.
In the process, and despite the extensive remote learning periods (over the course of the last two years our students have been through seven lockdowns and more than 200 days of working outside of the specialised art studios), they created works that express how they perceive and respond to the specific design needs, life challenges or the world around them. The visual thinking helped them to express what it is that they feel and what they see. Being “prepared for a situation” our students “know what to do”, and thus receive skills for life, skills for living. Importantly, notwithstanding the restrictions and challenges of remote learning, their work is experimental, diverse, and transnational, and strongly linked to our schoolwide focus on Adventure, Positive and Creative Education. As the work displayed in the catalogue testifies, self-isolation or not, the Art and Design has nonetheless been thriving. The Visual Arts Department, as well as the School, would like to acknowledge the effort, determination, perseverance and, ultimately, the wholesome development that so many of our students have demonstrated through the last two Covid-ridden years, when they have had to develop their creative solutions to art and design problems, largely in isolation. The students are PRIMED. On behalf of the School, I wish them well in their future endeavours. Dr Peter Bajer Head of Visual Arts

MIA FERRALL (EM) Inspired by the permanence and ethereal quality of Scott Andrews’ wet plate collodion printing, I initially explored the theme of nostalgia to compliment the early photographic printing mediums. However, I shifted my focus and have been reflecting upon the concept of femininity. My aim was to construct a realm, of inner self and self-reflection, intertwining nostalgic emotion with inherent traits that neither embraces nor challenges feminine qualities and instead captures the beauty of the feminine body and spirit. In the mission to rebuke gender constructs, ‘feminine’ characteristics have been given negative connotations and consequently I want my works to be freed from socio-political agenda to allow for intimate and unopinionated reflections on femininity to occur. The medium was chosen as an attempt to mix modern and old techniques to compliment the theme of reflection. The permanency of the old photographic printing, in comparison to the ease of modern photography, printing and electronic viewing interested me as I was inspired to create meticulous everlasting works of art. Femininity is comparable to collodion and platinum palladium printing as feminine characteristics are inimitable to the individual and eternal alike to the prints. Additionally, the soft texture of the prints and the subdued haze of early printing techniques adds an element of subtlety and beauty that illuminates the feminine attributes of the subject. 12

JACQUELINE GILMAN (Fr) My artworks are based around various mental and neurodevelopmental disorders, exploring how each disorder differs in its unique manner and how it can manifest in art. Each work represents a different mental condition, with the hope to educate and influence the viewers perspectives around mental health disorders. Many of those around us are affected and often go misunderstood or suppress their feelings. My approach focused on finding a positive aspect to each of the very serious and often debilitating mental conditions explored. I also wanted to provide a sense of hope, while simultaneously destigmatising mental health, as so often our daily lives are bombarded with depressing news sound bites, warping our individual thoughts. Growing up, moving countries, changing school, and experiencing the nuances between cultures facilitated my deep fascination with Psychology and how we all differ from one another. I used this discussed theme as an opportunity to reflect my knowledge and further develop a holistic understanding of the human condition, ensuring that I am educated on each and every condition and portraying my personal interpretation. My research entailed exploring artists who suffered from mental illness, including Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse and Louis Wain, and how their conditions transformed their art making. Their drastically different works influenced my thought process and direction, leading me to artists who approached their work with a methodical and scientific approach. Specifically, I looked at artworks by Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Australian contemporary artist Janette Lawrence, who influenced my drawing style and incorporation of scientific elements. Lawrence, in particular her ‘After Nature’ exhibition, which I viewed in person and fell in love with the literal and the message behind her works, inspired me to take Art in the first place. 14

LUCY HU (Cl) ‘Loneliness’ is something that so commonly consumes an individual’s everyday life, consciously or unconsciously. In a recent statement, the Victorian government titled it as the “new health challenge that Australians are facing”. The word ‘loneliness’ means being unhappy or feeling alone due to the lack of social connections. Coronavirus restricted people’s social activities which, in turn, prolonged periods of home isolation, resulting in many feeling that they are alone. Personally, I am one of the people who have experienced loneliness due to Covid. As an international student, I have not been home for more than two years. Living in a foreign country by myself and far away from friends and family made me truly feel alone and detached. But the idea of being able to capture and share my experience through the art lens allows me to let go of some of the negative emotions. This ultimately led me to create a body of work primarily focused on feelings triggered by being alone and struggles that I had to face. The different portraits have been painted with acrylic on canvas or digitally with Procreate (an iPad application). The paintings have been used to illustrate alternate interpretations of loneliness and to explore how emotions can be represented in paintings. In communicating various feelings to my audience, I used subdued colors and specific facial expressions to implicitly create the atmosphere of being lonely. 16

ISABELLA HUNTER (A) My exhibition is based around the theme of the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’, indiscretions which are fatal to the physical and spiritual growth of humankind. The artworks are centred mostly around four of the so-called Cardinal sins: Envy, the desire for other’s traits and abilities; Lust, the inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body; Pride, an excessive belief in one’s abilities, and Sloth, the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. Through my artworks, I wanted to highlight the role media plays in deliberately or unintentionally encouraging these harmful behaviours in everyday life. I believe my exhibition impacts the audience in a way which causes them to experience a sense of deeper understanding of the perpetuation of these vices throughout modern media. Overall, I would like the audience to notice and reflect on the harmful message that the media feeds the population and especially the youth. 18

JASON KUANG (Cu) I have been exploring the issue of ‘Urban Sprawl’ focusing on the effects of urbanisation. The overall aim of my body of work was to bring attention to the crowded living conditions and the monotonous architecture in densely populated areas such as India and China. I was highly motivated to explore this theme as it connects with my personal experiences. Having grown up in Guangzhou China, where there has been rapid urbanisation and commercialisation, I have seen firsthand the rise of cramped housing and the spaces some people live in. I am aware that the people who live in these conditions have no other choice due to reasons such as poverty, and some may need help or want to spread awareness but lack the ability to do. Because of this, I have chosen to take this opportunity to present on this issue and speak out for them, creating a body of work dedicated to spreading awareness to the issue of cramped and mundane living conditions. The prominent principles and elements within my works are pattern, line, colour and geometric shapes, heavily influenced by the works of the German photographer Michael Wolf, and the Australian artist Jeffrey Smart. The exhibition was designed to evoke a sense of confrontation to those who have not experienced living in vast, soulless, high rise apartment environs. I hope to give the viewers an insight into the daily lifestyles in these areas. 20

Awakening Photography Living light Pastel on paper Connectedness Pastel on paper
STAR ROSE MILLER (He) As the fundamental truth running through all religious traditions, the concept of light was the central theme of my exploration. Viewed through an ephemeral lens, the notions of lightness and darkness seek to bridge dichotomised concepts of good vs. evil, knowledge vs. ignorance and love vs. hate, respectively. I wanted the viewer to look at my work and for it to ignite an inner awareness of the conceptual light within them and that surrounds them, as ultimately, the only thing that is going to heal the world in a period of darkness, is to then connect this inner light with each other. To combat the societal focus on linear views of separateness, the spherical element in the halo of white and blue light is representative of the communicated inner truth of divinity that emerges from this evolved perspective. In connecting light and space to the uncertainty of human condition and the desire to reshape the world – a world in which we all must live – the work introduces the element of a higher presence. Through digital manipulation and oil pastel, I have attempted to capture that the survival of humanity and the planet is dependent on us finding the light within us; in nature; the greater consciousness; the philosophies encouraging the core principle of loving kindness to which white light represents. Opening with the Bardo state of in between, the horizon divides the page in two with the consequential separateness relative to that experienced on earth, with people divided by the fear of uncertainty and societal focus on views of separateness. Many find sanctuary in religious teachings during moments of angst or suffering and thus I see an importance in encouraging the viewer to focus on the similarities, as opposed to the differences that are so commonly used to separate, in various religions; that love, kindness and compassion are represented by the concept of light; that to be the light is to practice loving kindness. My works aim to raise one’s consciousness out of fear and the subsequent emotions of anxiety, anger, and hatred, in an effort to uplift and add perspective. 22

ANNIE MITCHELL (Ga) The theme of my exploration, ‘Road to Nowhere?’, has been inspired by the global issue of mental health, which has had an enormous negative impact on modern western society, especially the youth of today, and is often manifested through or triggered by a lack of hope, enlightenment or confidence. To combat these obsessive thoughts of disaster and violence, emotional instability and insecurities, this exhibition attempts to bring optimism, forming a purposeful antidote. I decided to create artworks that would evoke joy and buoyancy within the viewer, especially those who may be struggling with mental illnesses. The visual art elements differ from piece to piece; however, all coherently convey their message through flowers, acting as a symbol of hope. Although different approaches and mediums were implemented such as acrylic on canvas and needling on canvas, the coherence lies within the continual foreground of flowers and their enlightening connotations against moody aesthetics represented in the background, creating clear contrast. Close attention was given to the details of the names of the artworks to allow viewers to form their own feelings about the pieces, as well as their own interpretation of symbolism. The artworks were named according to the variety of flower/s shown and linked to an adjective representing an emotion. Overall, I was hoping that by seeing my works the viewers will feel optimistic in our current isolated state with Covid, ultimately expressing emotions of joy and calmness; the emotions and state of mind I felt while creating these pieces. 24

Fragility of life Mixed media
Mental illness is a global issue which is particularly prevalent today, therefore I wanted to explore this concept in my works, explicitly looking into human suffering and humanity’s capacity for self-destruction. I extended this investigation by examining how mental illness can be expressed through the facial landscape and body language, capturing ordinary people with common hardship. This led me to my exhibition theme, ‘Suffering in society’, aiming to raise awareness of the severe spike in mental hardships in the youth community due to the current pandemic. I hope to tailor the suggested distress seen throughout my artworks to each person’s individual struggles. The style of my artworks was inspired by an array of artists, using smudging and distortion as well as fragmentation and dark shadows to represent the deconstruction of the facial landscape, symbolising emotions felt when mentally ill. I specifically worked with the medium of charcoal to further develop my dystopian theme and used the material of cardboard. Cardboard aims to uphold fragility as a part of the proposition, recognising that these emotions slowly fade into inner turmoil, thus, I have used majority of my works in a purposely ephemeral manner, the material symbolising the deterioration provoked by mental illness. Overall, I hope viewers will consider the extent of this issue, leaving with a new understanding of mental illness. 26

Death Do Us Part Narrative Short Film
ANGUS ALEXANDER (P) For my media product, I decided to create a short film following a romantic couple spending their day in the city. The idea for a short film came about through my intense love and appreciation of existing film and media, which was the main reason I decided to take up Media in the first place. The film itself was extremely fun to make and taught me what I am capable of creating and achieving if I dedicate my mind to it for such an extended period of time. The film was intended to be in the art-house genre but definitely explores conventions typical to a horror, drama and thriller-style movie. The film was intended to challenge the common conception that marriage and long standing relationships bring fulfillment to somebodies life, which I think to a certain level was achieved through underlying symbolism and dialogue throughout my film. The most exciting and fun aspects of my media production included storyboarding the narrative, and seeing that vision come to fruition when I was actually filming. This was particularly satisfying when I shot scenes with a strong use of lighting and colour, mainly towards the end of the film. Overall, without the help of Beavis throughout both Year 11 and 12 Media, none of the steps taken towards creating this short film would have been possible, nor would the experience have been so fun and enjoyable! 30

Space Time and Coffee Narrative Short Film
JACK BARBER (FB) My media product is a short film titled ‘Space Time and Coffee’ which is a sci-fi comedy/B-movie inspired by the visual and narrative style of Edgar Wright. The film follows a young man who participates in a science experiment which results in him contracting the ability to randomly skip forward through time. When creating my product, my sole intention was for it to be something which others found funny and enjoyable to watch. I try to do this through my use of interesting editing techniques, such as having match cuts to represent Will (Will Irving) skipping through time, cloning Will in the mirror and the employment of crash zooms. As well as the inclusion of quirky over the top characters such as Dr Alexander (Angus Alexander). Creating this product has been a gruelling experience, and though it is not perfect and there are definitely parts which I would change if I was able to do it again, I am proud of it never the less. 32

Final Warning Narrative Short Film
ARCHIE BURT (Cu) My film follows three boys – Danny, Roger and Clyde – who are on their final warning before being expelled from school. The three boys need to pull off one last food heist, will they succeed without getting caught? I really wanted to make a film more than anything else as my final product. If I got all the way toYear 12 and didn’t give my all to make a movie, I wouldn’t feel like I had fulfilled the goals of my younger self. I wanted to set up a fun story to follow and try to make it as entertaining as possible with characters that enhance the experience through their personalities. All three main characters are named from movie characters in the heist genre (apart from Roger). Danny is named after ‘Danny Ocean’ in Ocean’s 11 (2001), Clyde is named after ‘Clyde Logan’ from Logan Lucky (2017) and Roger is named after ‘Roger (Verbal) Kint’ from The Usual Suspects (1995). My inspiration came from movies that my dad showed me as I grew up. War movie classics like Battle of Britain (1969) and Zulu (1964), which are unrelated to my movie specifically, have fuelled my love for film. My story reflects a niche and interesting part of the boarder’s lifestyle which I blew up into a big deal with high stakes. Any resemblance to true events is purely coincidental. 34

SAM CALVERT-JONES (FB) I managed to achieve my aim by putting together a full claymation music video with greenscreen animation. I am pleased with how the actions of the characters and background fit with what is being sung in the song. I am sure that my target audience will acknowledge the narrative more than the song itself. I believe my intention of providing an entertaining claymation music video to children that is shown through core themes and actions that relate to the lyrics was successful. The lack of quality was, to some extent, due to lockdowns and limited access to the studio and equipment but the childish nature of it fits in with the target audience. 36

Heroin Chic Narrative Photography
JEMMA GRIFFITHS (EM) My photos were inspired by the 1990s fashion photography trend ‘Heroin Chic’. Heroin chic is characterised by pale skin, dark under eyes, a very skinny and androgynous body complexion and dishevelled hair. The heroin chic trend has drawn much criticism and scorn, especially from anti-drug groups. The heroin chic look was about seeming unhealthy and extreme thinness, very much the opposite of the supermodel look; vibrant and healthy. I decided to bring back this look and re-invent it by adding my twist on it by raising awareness of drug abuse, especially under the age of 18. My focus was to interrogate the use of drugs and the violence it can cause to us. My aim was to also elaborate on how these drug problems can affect a nation, a person’s health and the people around them. 38

Imagine, Would You, Could You? Narrative/Editorial Photography
FRANKIE JACKSON (EM) I have chosen for my media product to produce a series of 10 photographs in which all follow the same narrative, acting as an advertisement campaign. The narrative I will be following will be central to evoking awareness around animal abuse and its inadmissible correlation to domestic abuse. The photographs will induce audiences with a sense of profound desolation, contemplation, remorse, empathy and justice. I intend for each image to influence viewers to contemplate their actions in consideration to the treatment of animals in their lives and their surrounding lives as parallel to their treatment of their own human loved ones, aiding to revert a humane reflection upon the treatment of animals in society. I was drawn to this notion through multiple influencing factors. Through studying a series of anthologies entitled Only the Animals by author Ceridwen Dovey, I began to explore and become intrigued by the relationship between animals and humans and the extent to which animals become, in the presence of humans, vivid reflections of society’s tendencies and actions. I felt myself, in investigating this, evolving greater feelings of empathy towards animals - as I began to consider the vastness of what an animal can represent about humanity. 40

I Took A Pill To Kill Narrative Short Film
COCO JEFFREY (Fr) The impact I wish to generate in my audience is that the illusion a person demonstrates to the world differs from their specific reality in their head. In essence not ‘judging a book by its cover’, which is something I wish for the audience to consider whilst processing the film. Artistic inspiration from this work has been presented through the film We Are Your Friends where the transition from traditional film to animation is displayed in a seamless convergence. Additionally, the psychological thriller Get Out features a hypnosis section, where the main character Chris goes into ‘the sunken place’. This segment of the film was the basis inspiration for how to process a delusion from reality in terms of subject matter. To maintain audience engagement, special effects and editing techniques will be implemented. I want my audience to feel inspired to think beyond the category they’ve been placed into as a result of societal opinions and views and think beyond into an imaginative landscape that is their own mind. 42

GEORGIA KELLY (EM) Throughout the media process I was able to enhance my individual style my adopting strategies of raw, natural and bold aesthetics through photography. Within my early research, I was able to get a grasp of what my own individual style was through research into photographers Tyler Mitchell and Annie Leibovitz. I was really inspired with both of their works for Vogue where they did really up close and personal shots that helped present their values and personality through images, which is what inspired me to continue with that theme throughout my own work. Having models represent themselves in their most unique form that empowers themselves and then, hopefully, others around them. 44

Provocateur Narrative Photography
WILLIAM MANIFOLD (M) I created 10 photos on the theme of ‘Provocateur’. I aimed to make these photos provoke conversation around topics that are somewhat uncomfortable and not talked about in a day-to-day setting. The ideas and issues that have been covered in these photos are topics that aren’t talked about enough. I wanted some of the photos to be on hot topics in the media, like women’s rights. The rest of the photos are on topics that have been bubbling in society for quite some time and still haven’t been talked about properly, such as: male stereotypes, beauty standards, societal expectations, anxiety and depression, and health. I want to provoke my audience to have a conversation with themselves and others so these issues can be addressed and fixed. I made these photos because these are topics that are important to me and I would love to live in a world where these issues are being talked about and fixed. I realised that I can’t wait around for someone else to do something about these problems so I may as well do something to get the ball rolling. I also made these photos because I want to improve my photography skills and make photos that are fun and will have a good effect on society. 48

WILL MCKAY (P) In my photographic series, I believe I have captured aspects of training, match play and post-match well and have fulfilled what I described as the ‘champion’s journey’ within my intention statement. Each of the images tells a story of the game of football and the aspects that go into it. I wanted to capture training, pre-game, during game and post-game images that sum up the sport of AFL, capturing the hardships and emotions that come with a game of footy. Although this was done with a mix of different photos from shoots of different games, I do believe that I have been able to achieve what I wanted to and that my product reflects what I had originally set out to do. Considering the difficulty I encountered with completion of the product, I do believe I have completed the final to a high standard. 50

CHRISTIAN PONTIKIDES (A) I created a short film which purely focuses on capturing different forms of beauty in ways which I as the producer appreciate. Unlike many other short films there will not be a great message to what my film, however it will be something which people can look towards for fashionable or artistic inspiration. The main purpose of my film is to express some of my personal interests as well as my eye for excellence amongst different atmospheres which I will be trying to convey to the viewer through my piece or work. I want to explore the ideas which I associate with being cool, stylish, fashionable and sophisticated through my selection of settings, clothing, and figures. I then wanted to bring these things together to create an aesthetic image brought to life by the camera techniques, music and editing which will enhance the ideas which I want to convey to the viewers. 52

MADDY RAKIC (A) My print layout is directed to all genders from greater Geelong and other surrounding regions. My product is to be of interest to individuals who are ‘coming of age’ and starting to take a step towards adulthood. Therefore, they have a familiar understanding of starting to conform to a society and beginning to grow up. They can still put that aside and find joy in celebrations; being loose, free and, occasionally, make stupid or reckless decisions in the moment. The audience can be considered to be a reflection of my product- they are extroverts, loving, open-minded, kind and fun. My target audience have managed to stay strong and persevere through COVID-19. Furthermore, these individuals are considered ‘resilient’ as they’ve persevered with loss, suicide, financial hardships, and hundreds of COVID-related deaths. For these people, COVID was no more than an intolerable prison as they’ve remained in lockdown, away from society, friends, school, and teachers. With many struggling to find outlets like sports and friends, many experienced mental health episodes. This is why we must celebrate coming out of crisis and take note of the hardships my target audience experienced. Ultimately, making sure their voice is heard and they are not alone as many people have experienced the same things they have. 54

The Higgins Story Documentary Film
HARRIET ROBINSON (Fr) My media product takes the form of a documentary that explores the concept of hard work, chasing childhood dreams and where persistence and determination can take you in life. My documentary stars the AFL player Shaun Higgins and talks about his life and his football career over the past 16 years. My film was inspired by multiple football documentaries like Making Their Mark, Heart of the Game and The Final Story. It aims to include certain techniques that made each documentary successful like the interviewing process and the story telling aspect. The documentary gives the audience an insight into how Shaun grew up surrounded by football, how much effort was put into making his career and what keeps him inspired to play the game every week. Not only does it talk about the football side of Shaun’s life, it also talks about the family aspect of him being a father, coming from such big family group and which bits of juggling such an intense career and family life are the hardest but also which are the most rewarding. 56

The Life of a Postman Documentary Film
TANNA RYAN (Fr) My intention was to create a short documentary following the life of my local postman, Dwayne Smith. The purpose of the piece was to create an engaging documentary where the audience will gain a greater appreciation for the work that the postal services do. As Australians, stemming from our ancestry of convicts, we have a culture of appreciating the stories of hard-working people from the working class. Throughout my film I have aimed to educate the audience on the work that goes into and behind them receiving their mail along with providing them a greater insight of the daily life of Dwayne and who he is. I have tried to create a film that shines a light on a person whom provides an essential service to Australia. I have tried to engage my audience through the use of the A-roll footage being the interview being paired with the B-roll which will work to convey personal anecdotes and other aspects of the interview in an entertaining way. I have also utilised different cameras and camera techniques/angles as a way to create an engaging film. I was lucky enough to be able to use an original song by Maurizio Gulina working to create a playful atmosphere throughout the film. 58

The Friend I’ve Got Music Video
RUTH SCOTT (Year 11, Fr) My folio was originally intended to explore struggles and doubts, and how they haunt you, expressed through the media form of a three-minute music video. I chose the song “The Friend I’ve Got” because it confronts the intended topics and audiences, with the ‘Friend’ being mental illness. Through the production process, I observed the cliché tropes and created a product that plays on the platitude of classic student video about mental illness and health. I was interested in how I could express mental illness in a physical form, I ended up being thoroughly inspired by the film A Ghost Story and how the ‘ghost’ was formulated by the classic sheet ghost, more often used as children Halloween costumes. I intended for the ghost to be visually gothic and haunting. Through the editing stages my main focus was on colour pallet. I wanted to experiment with how I could express emotion through colour and how colour contrast effects the aesthetic and feel. I was interested in consistently sustaining an unsaturated and mute colour pallet, with the exception of four frames. One was completely unedited and remained bright and natural to express the characters triumph and the other three also remained unedited however they were lit by a deep blue LED light making it the darkest point of the film, which represents the lowest point of the character. 60

Fun K Music Video
MOMO WU (Cu) I made a song at the start of Term 3 with the wish to use it in my final media folio. While I was preparing my media product design, none of the song was made, so I wrote down the contention as a conceptual music video. The song and clip challenge the establishment of hip-hop music, the root of which originated from African Americans expressing the struggles of oppression in the United States. Although I don’t necessarily come from a background of wealth, the culture of hip-hop has influenced me dramatically, as it is now basically pop music. From fashion, slang, social media etc. none can escape hip-hop’s influence. More specifically, I took inspiration from A$AP Rocky, Baby Keem, Tyler the Creator and, more specifically, the MV directors, Dave Free and Dexter Navy. The lyrics of the song reflect the life I’m in and how my social status doesn’t necessarily match the genre projected. But rather than a negative “gatekeeping” energy, I chose to put a positive spin on it, which is why it is titled “Fun K”, a play on the word “funky”. 62

Music Video
OSCAR ZHANG (FB) In my music video, I intended to reflect the lonely, dark atmosphere felt by many due to the pandemic throughout 2020 and 2021. The song itself explores feelings of distance in a relationship accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This music video utilised dark lighting and editing, as well as juxtapositions with colourful digital life and friends that helped me get through the pandemic. The short, colourful juxtapositions imply a sense of joy in the midst of the dark atmosphere. The dark aesthetic is complemented by small examples of gore and blurred effects to further emphasise the disorienting feeling one may feel during the pandemic. After 2020, I felt uplifted that we finished that awful year, and I wanted to reciprocate that feeling in my initial idea for my media product. However, as lockdowns kept happening, I felt that a more sombre song would be appropriate to how I felt during 2020 and parts of 2021. I created this song in collaboration with a friend from the United States. Their contributions detailed how their relationship with their partner has become weaker throughout the pandemic, but they are working with them to reconnect, which is a sentiment I feel many can empathise with. Overall, this music video and song intends to convey feelings of loneliness and disorientation, however still being able to find joy in some things that resulted from that same event. 64

CATE BLYTH (He) My artwork has been influenced by the idea of fragility. I have done this through the focus on women and nature going through the stages of being delicate, vulnerable and finally embracing your imperfections. I found it interesting how these three stages are so common for women to experience in life, all while facing public opinions. I wanted to convey the different body shapes through the forms of my final artworks while depicting stretch marks with the use of gold lustre. The three stages are implied throughout all my final artworks of ‘Precious’, ‘Impressions’ and ‘Embrace’, which all uncover how it can feel to be women in a world where you are expected to be perfect, which is impossible. The colour of the glazes on my final artworks convey the stages women go through with nature to find how to embrace yourself for who you are. 68

SOPHIE BUTCHER (A) My folio this year has been inspired by the idea of ‘identity’ and the different layers it can have. To achieve this, I wanted to explore the effect of communicating my theme through the use of gothic/ambiguous styles, while also exploring the consequence of mixing both naturalism and non-naturalism in my works. I decided, through my exploration, the layers of identity, settling in the end on three: The Body; The Surrounding Environment; and The Self/Expression of the soul. This resulted in three total works, which are intended to create one cohesive piece through their consistent scale and proportion. ‘The Body’ was made using ink paint on paper and depicts inexplicit female nudity as a way of stripping back all the other layers of a person to its base form of the physical body. I used a lack of colour for this work as a way of communicating the lack of substance a person’s appearance should have. ‘The Environment’ was made using acrylic paint on a clear acrylic Perspex sheet and was created to seemingly appear natural but somehow fantastical. I did this through a use of colour and texture and allowed space in the middle as to permit the girl to be seen through the nature like a window. Its colour and immersivity are intended to communicate the extreme influence a person’s surroundings can have over them, the way they feel and even how they act. Finally ‘The self/soul’ was made using textiles and sewing, using a combination of colours featured in my other two works as a way of connecting them. I decided to make this layer in the form of clothing, as it is one of our most personal methods of self-expression in the modern day. The extravagant nature of the dress demonstrates the materialistic nature of people and links an individual’s wealth to their sense of self-worth. This communicates the beauty and flaws of people, and the dress being entirely reversable shows how people can change how they appear and the level of which they show themselves depending on the situation. The dress also takes influence from different cultures as to show a connection to heritage resulting in its name being ‘Tadamonoron’, a translation from the Japanese language meaning ‘materialism’. 70

LEO CHEN (Fr) In the exploration of the theme ‘breaking gender stereotypes through fashion’, this concept focuses on the polar ends of the gender spectrum. I have defined each gender’s masculine and feminine forms to the hyper extent of stereotypes, and have used these definitions to breakdown and debunk the stereotypes of the opposite gender. Earlier this year, it was established that anything that could be considered of nature was classified as feminine. Therefore natural elements were applied to create the sub themes for the two artworks: WILL (romantic naturism), a more traditional take on femininity in fashion, with a more basic look into nature and HUGO (surrealistic romanticism and biomimicry), the more modern depiction, to a hyper masculine form. WILL (romantic naturism) takes the more “traditional femininity” interpretation of “romantic naturism”, inspirations were taken from the Rococo era, in particular the ball gown, corset silhouettes and flowers. These also were the main symbolism of feminine beauty in the western world during a similar period and until now, so a really timeless depiction of femininity. HUGO (surrealistic romanticism and biomimicry) is an A1 soft colour pastel illustration of what was going to be a finished garment of itself. HUGO takes the very modern ways of depicting femininity, similar to the ways established in: “surrealistic romanticism and biomimicry”. Inspiration here was drawn from designers like Iris van Herpen and Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli. The fluid movement of the wearer showcases the fabrics emerging from the bandeau that resembles multiple deep sea fish. 72

CLAUDIA COLE (He) My theme for exploration this year was ’people and place’; the way in which people can fit into workplaces or homes is a concept that I have always found inspiring. I believe that the human race is programmed to connect with the environment around them and to adapt to what is available in order to survive and flourish. Throughout everyday life people are in their element whether it be the local barista or a surfer in the water, this type of connection that people have with their surroundings. Throughout the design process I have been focusing on people and their environments which they feel as they belong. When exploring with the art elements and principals, I have trialled utilising colour through the use of both digital photography focusing on different tones and how having some aspects of an image in black and white whilst other parts in colour can alter the image. 74

ETHAN COLLEY (A) The underlying theme in my exploration this year was the aesthetics associated with architecture, comparing artificial beauty with natural beauty. My intention in these final artworks is to explore the concept of invasion regarding these two ideas. Whilst this idea of ‘invasion’ is not necessarily violent so to speak, it highlights a slow and enduring process over several years. One of these artworks demonstrates human encroachment into the natural world as expressed by the chosen 19th-century style of architecture, a time of great destruction in nature, and the other demonstrating nature invading architecture and the resulting aesthetics produced from this convolution. Ultimately it is up to the observer to decipher which artwork is referring to these prompts, but visual elements in the given artwork are able to provide an answer. 76

SOPHIE ELLIS (He) My artwork has been influenced by the conceptual idea of phobias and how, as humans, we create a mind game which traps and confines the human mind to have a physical or behavioural negative reaction caused by a specific object. Through my work I have aimed to create pieces that conjure an idea of the impact of exterior environment and the interior environment being your mind and how individuals have different stimuli causing a phobia. This is expressed through my final series that incorporates symbolism and scale, that both signify and contrast the ideas of phobia triggers. The comparison of an exterior environment was presented through the background of a rural environment. I demonstrated the way the environment you are placed in is bigger than the trigger itself. In the same sense, I portrayed the significance of the mind’s impact that places you directly in a situation that could possibly cause the viewer to feel claustrophobic. I confront the viewers with a series of images that could trigger an individual or at least cause them to feel the vulnerability through the images. All the objects in my two series carry symbolic weight and meaning as they are representing the phobias which could create the sense of fear. In terms of media, I have focused on using a series of photographs. I wanted to convey the trigger of phobias using objects and how there are interior triggers of the human mind and exterior experiences and how they can be conveyed through the use of environment. Furthermore, I aimed to portray a sense of vulnerability and capture the process of triggers on an individual. The purpose is for viewers to reflect on the images and create a sense of unease, fear and vulnerability. 78

REBECCA GUNNERSEN (Cl) The focus of my folio has been looking into diametric relationships and how two ideas or things that may lie on different ends of the spectrum can have a middle ground or point of convergence. I have then focused my research and development under the three concepts of opposites, convergence and anaglyphs. In both my final works I focused on using my subject matter of people and the human form as a base in which to communicate these ideas along with vibrant colour and symbols. ‘Killer Queen’ depicts three heads– one male, female and non-binary person– and ‘Made in Heaven’ uses three female forms as a base to visually communicate. These works were based under the idea of two opposites overlapping in a visual representation of a Venn diagram. 80

GEORGIA KELLY (EM) The focus of my folio this year has been inspired by the detrimental effect the media has on young girl’s “loss of innocence” due to the media’s manipulative ways of demanding perfection. With the predominant theme of ‘Barbie’s Nightmare’, I have explored the elements of innocence contrasted with unsettling environments and actions to create a representation of the fine line between youth and the loss of innocence. This has been done through capturing moments of derealisation and emotion, in such a way that the works are representations of artistic expressions of a loss of innocence. Photography is my central medium, with my subject matter and aesthetic style ensuring that the works are interrelated and stand together under the broader theme of ‘Barbie’s Nightmare’. The focus on capturing moments of derealisation through emotion is captured in both works in the sense that there is a continuing theme of the subject being in an environment you wouldn’t expect her to be in. Both the subject and environment are the basis of my work and the concept is captured through the derealisation of the subject and its environment in both of my pieces. 82

ABBEY KRIPPL (A) Throughout the year, I explored how natural beauty can be depicted and what connections can be formed from it. Characterised as “nature under your skin”, I set out to explore the different ways this could be interpreted and presented narrowing in on the relationship between nature and humans and the mood and or feelings that can be a direct link from the natural environment that they are presented in. I have done this through the use of photography capturing moments in nature where human interaction can be seen and that there is a noticeable element that is manipulated in the photo. I produced two final images, ‘unbound’ and ‘exposed’, photographed by me that both foresee unity of my theme. 84

INDI LAYCOCK (Cl) The concept focuses on how women are typically stereotyped through the decades in Australia by using domestic items like machinery and aprons that have a gendered understanding and connotation. It expresses the change from the olden day decorative fabrics to the new modern day utilitarian fabrics as well as visual features like colour palettes, textures and form. When deconstructing my theme, I focus on how women are typically depicted in different ways and how these symbols help to capture both the historical and cultural context of the era. The subject matter within my images includes anything and everything in the foreground and background that is seen in the image to create it. The location is set on a rural backdrop which is consistent across both images to create a context that juxtaposes with the subject matter. The costumes chosen in my images are strictly to show two separate ideas that are cohesively bonded by their location and intended meanings through representation of era and decade. 86

BONNIE MUIR (EM) My folio exploration has been focused on the relationship between beauty and decay - a theme focused upon the often-overlooked beauty within abandoned environments. I directed my focus to exploiting the beauty in natural change through the process of reinvention and transformation. I have presented my theme through the sense of narrative and history from abandoned objects, reminding us of nature’s ability to reclaim what it once controlled. Additionally providing us a sense of nostalgia and the time past of the perceived beauty in women. Within the abandoned vignette, I attempted to hint at a story of who once owned the space, strengthening the idea neglect and desertion. I also focused on the natural phenomenon of decay in flowers by creating a time-lapse video of a decaying burnt flower, reinforcing the idea of reclamation and change. 88

ALICE PEDDIE (He) My initial theme was based around the relationship between humans and the natural environment; however, my final artworks specifically focus on the exploitative and toxic relationship in which the industrialised world has with the natural environment. Through the use of fluorescent colour, I have been able to represent the materialistic and greedy behaviors in which wealthy people, generally those in power, embody. This, juxtaposed with the muted, earthy colours of the rocks, emphasises the toxic and incohesive relationship. Additionally, casting concrete leads to the formation of geometric forms, reflecting the perfection in which the industrialised world strives to obtain, further emphasised by the contrast against the irregular organic forms of the rocks which intertwine through the sculpture and surround the base of the geometric forms in the photographs. Moreover, the texture between the man-made and the natural also differ, with the man-made appearing polished, depicting this kind of superficiality, against the rough, raw texture in which the rocks embody. However, although at an initial glance the man made forms appear smooth, up close there are tiny holes scattered, little rough patches, I’ve done this on purpose to further communicate this idea, that the industrialised western world are so concerned with the short term gratification in which they receive from making money, this constant want for more, grounded by this sense of materialism and greed is all unsustainable and short term. These people won’t experience true happiness and a sense of living until they appreciate and respect the natural world around them and fix the toxic relationship which is currently in place. 90

JENNA RILEY (Cl) The focus of my folio throughout the span of this year has been taking a deep dive into the idea that people are more consumed by fear at the idea of not being remembered after they pass away in contrast to normal perceptions of death. My second final is a subplot that deconstructs the means of connecting the child’s ‘alive’ and ‘shadow’ self, acting as a reflection of what little things are enjoyed without the focus of greed and leaving an impact behind that is developed in later adulthood. Within this overriding theme, I have also attempted to highlight the change of art styles throughout the year, with one final focusing on traditional ink paintings on a Japanese Concertina Moleskin Flipbook, and the modern adaptation of digital animation. 92

EMMA SAMPSON (Cl) ‘Animals Improve Mental Health’ encompasses the simplicity and beauty of animals that we as humans underestimate within our world. My two artworks, ‘Devotion’ and ‘Soul mate’, illustrate that when in the presence of animals, our mental health, and mindfulness takes us to a state of contentment. With an objective to convey connection, the two works developed evoke connection via experimentation of light to depict a sense of mystery via shape, silhouettes, and shadows. Additionally, the finals explore contrast due to light exposure and contribute to creating textural and story-telling images. I strive to have viewers acknowledge their own relationships with animals, that might have been overlooked, as they recognise the bond between the two subjects in each work. Furthermore, I aimed to highlight how people can take animals for granted, but instead elucidate how they should be praised further as their presence increases our happiness. 94

OLIVIA SHERGOLD (Cl) In the exploration of the overarching theme ‘Reflections on Ocean Sustainability’, my artworks highlight the importance of keeping our ocean healthy, reflection on our purpose through visual reflection which hint at a reflective process in meditation, and the backlash of human impact when we do not maintain it to a sustainable level. The ‘Sustainable’ aspect can be visualised through the underlying feature of the surfboard which implies a human’s connection to the ocean. The symbolism of a ‘plastic bag’ and ‘fishing net’ connected to the subject, conveys the objects negative impacts in association with the ocean’s sustainability - which is reflected onto humans. The sea is calming with a tactile environment and captures a sensory for the audience to be immersed within the moment, which is enriched through the elimination of 96

colour to focus on the subject and objects through tonal contrast. ‘Reflection’ is depicted through the ocean and mirrors, which may require the viewers to move around the mirror and see the photo’s reflection, alongside reflecting on their own actions regarding the ocean’s sustainability. Both artworks convey a simplistic, subtle, reflective documentary, whilst foreshadowing the alert of the ocean’s sustainability through the objects used in connection with my model and her facial expression.
97
FLEUR STEPHEN (Cl) My artwork has been heavily influenced by the idea of human beings unable to control their mind. Particularly, I was inspired by how the disease Alzheimers can take over one’s brain. I was particularly affected by this as my grandpa was diagnosed with it and I watched his memory slowly fade away, tearing away his pride and saddening the family immensely. I implemented the medium of photography to convey how his memories can be visually depicted. Furthermore, demonstrating this through the symbolism of how memories can be blurred and others with a clear ability to be remembered. The juxtaposition of these two contrasting features allows and emphasis of the underlining theme of ‘the confided mind’. The sensory impact demonstrates my theme of grief and loss that has been influenced within my work. 98

SAFFIE YATES (Cl) The focus of my artworks is the roles of women over time. In Unit 3, I was interested by symbolic female figures like goddesses and their role to represent values and power in certain cultures. Additionally, I wanted to explore the universal understanding of the female role to be a mother. Thus, I have blended the idea that women are symbolic of fertility but also power. Throughout my studio process, creating and refining symbols allowed me to reflect my desired theme and aesthetics. Like artist Maximo Tuja, I was inspired for my artwork to have “first, second and third rounds of discovering details, hidden messages and ideas” (Máximo Tuja) which collage has allowed me to achieve via multilayers. I wanted to reiterate the ‘change’ aspect of my theme, as women progress from one stage of their life to the next through symbology, in particular butterflies, which reflect the cyclical nature of life and death. Furthermore, I incorporated the moon phases to reinforce the idea of time passing. I used ovarian cellular imagery in both artworks to draw strong and direct connections to fertility and the role of being a mother. 100

JULIAN BAJER (Fr) My client, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), is the aerial warfare branch of the Australian Defence Force. It operates the majority of the ADF’s fixed wing aircraft. This year the RAAF is celebrating their 100 years of service. The client requested an advertising poster to be designed to promote and inform the audience about an aircraft display event. The client have also requested to have an app and icon designed for the Australian International Air show. Both designs were to be designed to attract current and retired service men and women. It also had to appeal to boys and girls, aged (13-18), who are part of the Australian Air Force Cadets. The final advertisement poster was to include important information such as the time, date, location of the event, website address and social media icons. The final poster is clean, easy to read and has a contemporary feel. The app design for the Australian International Air Show comprises eight different screens containing all the relevant information. For the background of the app, I have decided to use the camouflage pattern of the Air Force uniform, as it helps to identify the client and create a distinctive feeling. The app icon has been designed to represent the centenary of the RAAF. I believe that both designs have successfully fulfilled the client’s requirements. 104

SALLY BARLOW (He) Harriet Walsh, a young 24-year-old entrepreneur, had recently founded a hamper business that specializes in showcasing rural and regional products. Her company is called Hattie Hampers Co. Ms. Walsh had noticed a gap in the market for promoting crops produced around Australia. To help the rural communities afflicted by the January 2020 bushfires and, more recently, by COVID lockdowns, she decided to expand her business. Her company is offering high-end regional-based hampers filled with the best locally-sourced products from particular regions. To help raise awareness of her brand, the client requested a logo/brand identity to be designed. The logo needed to represent Hattie Hampers Co. and be versatile enough to be used on packaging, business cards, stationary, stickers and on other promotional materials. Ms. Walsh also required a surface design for the hampers’ packaging. The concepts needed to be practical, unique and visually appealing. The designs also needed to represent individual regions of Australia from which the products for the hamper have been collected. Both final presentations were to attract an audience that has a keen eye for unique and aesthetically pleasing designs, as well as an interest in buying ethically sourced products from local businesses. Another requirement was to make sure that both designs engaged men and women aged between 18-80, of mid to high socioeconomic background. 106

GAMEING ENERGY DRINK
My client, CriticalHit, is a newly-established Melbourne-based business, intending 500 mL to sell caffeinated energy drinks themed around gaming and internet culture. For GAMEING ENERGY DRINK this new beverage, the client provided a brief requesting a can label design for their 500 mL energy drink, including a new company logo and two different sized advertisements for their new energy drink. The can label and logo needed to appeal to those who are interested in developing, watching, or playing video games by visually relating to technology and/or gaming. The client specified that the logo must include the name ‘CriticalHit’ and should be included as the main point of focus of the can. The advertisement posters were expected to include the brand logo either separate from or as a part of the can. It was also specified that one of the posters must be A4 sized and the other must be square so that the product can be easily displayed in a variety of contexts. In my opinion, both final visual communications meet the requirements outlined in the brief. HANNAH MAY SCOTT
AMBERLIE CALVERT (Ga) My client was Hannah May Scott, a British-born singer-songwriter based in Geelong, Australia. The 19-year-old has been posting music since her first debut album Caged, released back in 2019. Her music can be described as a mix of Folk to Blues to Pop, with hints of R&B Soul. The client provided a brief, outlining two needs: a new cover for her upcoming album Art Imitating Life, and a book of lyrics for her previous album Joan, which would consist of a front and back cover, and layouts of four sample song lyrics pages. The designs were to attract an audience consisting of Hannah’s music listeners across her social media platforms, predominantly 18 to 25-year-old women, who relate to her music on a personal level. Other audience characteristics included: mid to high socio-economic background, interest in art and music, and admiration of more unique and expressive designs. For the ‘Joan’ Lyric Book, many typefaces were explored, alongside different imagery for each spread. The final design used a modern serif type, in conjunction with a photo of Hannah displayed in a modern style. The imagery for each spread took on a more vintage style, with both the cover and pages appealing to the audience, whilst also holding visual interest. The album cover for ‘Art Imitating Life’ conveys the passion of Hannah’s music through use of colour, while still holding visual interest in the texture and typefaces used. I believe that both final presentations fulfil the brief well and would attract the intended target audience. 110

ALANNAH D’ANDREA (Ga) The client, Rocky’s Fruit and Vegies, is a wholesale fruit supplier that sells fresh produce to retail stores. The essence of the brand is centered around sustainability and being environmentally friendly. The client requested that these values should be translated into a brand identity and packaging for strawberries. Expanding into the Australian market, the client provided a brief in which they listed other expectations. They requested the logo to be an original design that is versatile for multiple applications and contexts. The packaging had to be constructed in a visually appealing manner using sustainable materials, whilst also remaining functional. The functionality of the packaging was contingent on maintaining the berries’ freshness whilst also providing product protection when travelling through the supply chain. Both visual communications were to be targeted towards individuals of all genders who were of any age and belonged to mid to high socio-economic status group. Additionally, the client requested that both presentations were to be attractive to people who strived to reduce their environmental footprint and who are interested in consuming fresh, sweet, and delicious berries that were organically and ethically grown and sourced.

My client, Geelong Grammar School, is an educational institution based in Corio, Victoria. The school has recently celebrated their 110th anniversary of being at the Corio Campus. The school focuses on giving its students an exceptional education. Furthering the expansion of their brand into the Australian market, the client provided a brief requesting a design for a set of three anniversary postal stamps and a layout for the front cover of a stamp book. The stamps were expected to reflect the buildings of the Corio Campus and meet the requirements of Australian Post (to make sure they would be able to be produced and sent to parents). The stamp design also had to include the name of the event, the year of production and denomination. The jacket needed to specifically relate to Geelong Grammar School to capture the audience’s attention – current students, as well as, Old Geelong Grammarians (OGGs). The client also expected the book cover to include quality illustration that would attract men and women of mid-to-high socioeconomic status. Both final presentations met the requirements of the brief. They are both visually striking and address all the set requirements e.g. showing interesting aspects of Geelong Grammar. 114

WILLIAM MANIFOLD (M) My client Fred Mandin, also known as Wilfred, is a young up-and-coming designer. He is 26 years of age. The client needed a logo for his newly-established company and a brand identity. Wilfred also requested a unique and interesting packaging design that would attract the audience while protecting the garments sold in his physical store or through his online shop. Wilfred’s company is a high-end fashion brand that focuses on sustainability, especially how his products affect the environment and society. His clothing is smart casual and he aims to make every design unique, impressive and worth its price. The brand is based in Victoria, Australia. I think that the concept that has been developed will help the client to build his brand identity and to become a household name in the fashion industry. 116

JENNA RILEY (Cl) My client, Twinings, is an English marketer of tea and other beverages, including coffee and hot chocolate. Based in Andover, Hampshire, the globally recognised business holds the world’s oldest continually-used company logo and is London’s longest-standing rate payer since 1706. Twinings tea varieties include black, green and herbal tea, along with fruit-based cold infusions. The client required packaging and a bag/tag design for its new flavoured tea, as well as a promotional poster for that product. Both presentation designs were to be targeted towards the same target audience i.e. people who enjoy a captivating, flavourful drink, such as hot or cold tea. Their products are generally directed towards men and women from adolescence to adults. The client requested that both designs should reflect that broad audience and project inclusiveness of the brand. On the other hand, they requested that the final presentations should reflect Twinings’ reputation for quality and attract people of mid to high socio-economic status. I believe that both concepts were able to capture all these needs and constraints. 118

EMMA RUFF (EM) My fictional client, Blissed out, is a new music festival set to take place in Byron Bay in 2022. The client provided a brief stating the need for a logo to communicate the festival’s unique brand identity as well as a promotional poster to assist with the advertisement of the event. The designs were targeted to a gender-neutral audience within the age range of late teens to early twenties, who are either living or vacationing in Byron. The target audience have an interest in music, more specifically the indie/ alternative genre and hold an appreciation of the creativity and art that goes into music. The final logo design met the requirements of the brief and fulfilled the need to appeal to those in their late teens to early twenties, of all genders. The logo could be recognised easily as it was a unique hand-generated, with a digitally modified font, in combination with a colourful gradient that is simple enough to read from a distance whilst also being unique enough to create a memorable impact. The poster design effectively captured the atmosphere of a music festival, illustrating the excitement, fun and youthful nature that is associated with events such as Blissed Out and the incorporation of the festival’s logo from presentation 1 further connects to the brand identity and creates a recognisable poster that can be associated with certain merchandise. I believe the poster conveys a festival that is appropriate for the ideals of the target audience and generates excitement around the event. 120

My fictional client, Salty Dog Toys, is a toy store in the coastal town of Torquay. The client requested that a new toy and logo were to be designed, both needed to reflect the character of the Surf Coast where the store is located and appeal to people of a mid to high socio-economic background. The designs needed to be gender neutral and appeal to those between the ages of 2-12 as well as adults who are likely to buy the product. The toy was to serve the purpose of being a source of both comfort and entertainment. For this aspect of the design, I created a soft dog toy dressed as a sailor reflecting the coastal region through the sailor outfit whilst the dog reflected the carefree nature of Torquay. For the second aspect of the brief, I created a swing tag and business card to display the logo which met the needs of the client in Contact: Salty Dog Toys creating an engaging and unique logo, reflecting the coastal region through the sailor Ph: 0413450349 Address: 25 Gilbert St Torquay hat icon and type in the design whilst reflecting that the store is environmentally Email: Toys@SaltyDog.com www.SaltyDog.com.au friendly through the use of colour. AUDREY THOMSON (Ga) My client, Playful Munchkins is an Australian owned, family company dedicated to providing high-end educational, non-toxic, natural wood and recyclable toys for imaginative and nourishing play. The toy store has recently expanded its business and was in need of a logo (brand identity). The client has also requested a playhouse design. The playhouse will be a small outdoor building targeted for kids aged 2-12 to spend their time in. The logo has been made to appeal to kids and draw their attention to the store. Care was taken to devise a gender neutral logo that would stand out amongst other toy shop brands. The design was created on Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. The playhouse design was created on Sketchup. It’s aesthetics and features have been developed specifically to attract children, and appeal to their parents. In my opinion, both the brand identity (Communication Design) and the playhouse (Environmental Design), fulfil the client’s needs and will appeal to the specific target audience. 124

THANK YOU I would like to say a very big thank you to the Visual Arts Department staff and especially to Mr Martin Beaver who taught 12 VCE Media and Mrs Lucy Haigh who was in charge of two 12 VCE Studio Arts classes. I also want to acknowledge the hard work of all the other members of the department: Ms Sharron Goodwin-Ryan and Jane Maaser, our Art Technician, as well as Art staff from the other three campuses. I am sure that at various stages of their artistic journey many of the art and design graduates were taught or assisted by them. The work that you see in this catalogue, would not have been created if it was not for the Staff’s ongoing mentorship of the students. Likewise, I would like to express my gratitude to Tanna Ryan (Fr) and William Manifold (M) who, as the Visual Art Captains, exceptionally represented the Department this year.
