ELISABETH MURDOCH HOUSE NEWSLETTER 2020 EDITION 6 JULY 29

DOCH
Welcome back to Term 3! At last week’s House assembly, we discussed practising gratitude as a way to counteract stress and to stay healthy during the coronavirus pandemic. Giving thanks can positively affect both our mental and physical health and, let’s face it, every part of our life relies on us having good health. It is more important than anything else. In a time where many people can’t enjoy the company of their friends, I am grateful that the GGS community can. We can watch TV, exercise, eat, play sport and have fun together. These moments, in a state, locked down by government restrictions, are a blessing. Prior to COVID-19, I must admit, I took a lot of what I was accustom to, for granted; the ability to workout at the gym, enjoy a coffee in a crowded and vibrant café and visit and embrace family and friends. I am frustrated and disappointed that I can’t experience those moments at will anymore. Like everyone, I too wish for this to be over. But it is not. For many people, this pandemic has caused a great deal of suffering. However, for the vast majority of us, including myself, it has only caused inconveniences. I am grateful that I could borrow a few free weights to stay fit, that I could buy machine to make coffee at home and that I have internet access to FaceTime and stay in contact with family and friends. While it is great to feel thankful for and appreciative of something in your life, within your consciousness, it is even more powerful when you share your gratitude of something with other people. Perhaps at dinner we could ask one another, “what are you grateful for”?

Chequered opportunities
in my house back in the UK and I felt like playing a game of chess, but none of my family wanted to play with me. So I took the time to set it up in my living room, got my fancy camera out and took these pictures of the chess board instead. The sun was out and that’s a pretty rare occurrence in the UK. - Maddy Frayne
Test champions Its not a pleasant procedure but well worth the knowledge that, for the time being at least, Corio and EM remain Covid free. Well done champs!
