We are pleased to offer an exciting Autumn program full of high-calibre events. You will find each page bursting with great authors, inspirational speakers, learning opportunities and fun activities. There is something for everyone! Explore Australian masculinity with renowned author, Tim Winton; celebrate the importance of storytelling in history with Sarah Rood; and delve into our collectively shaped Australian cultural identity with Eleanor Bourke, as part of our Open Mind Series. Hear Heather Morris discuss her novel based on real-life Holocaust survivor Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov. In May, we will participate in Library and Information Week by joining other libraries across the country for National Simultaneous Storytime. eKnow How is full of sessions that can assist you to learn new skills around technology. There is something very special happening in partnership with Geelong Gallery where we explore contemporary Australian children's literature with a series of 'Reimagine-The World According To Children's Books' events including a Family Fun Day. We also have a great program of activities for children and young people during the term and over the school holidays.

HUBCAPS 2 CREATIVE HUBS PREMIERE SCREENING Geelong Regional Libraries are pleased to host the premiere screening of Hubcaps 2 Creative Hubs: three short documentaries which explore three of Geelong’s unique industrial sites, as they are brought back to life in very special ways. Hubcaps 2 Creative Hubs is a film as well as a research project, developed by Deakin University and The University of Melbourne in partnership with Creative Geelong Inc. The films were produced thanks to the support of the people and businesses of Geelong and by community grants through a crowdfunding campaign in 2016. WORLD POETRY DAY 2018 Celebrate our rich landscape of local poets with an evening of poetry readings hosted by Cameron Lowe. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR FELICE JACKA - GUT MICROBIOTA AND MOOD Following last year’s lecture on preventing and treating mental disorders through diet, Professor Felice Jacka, Director of Deakin University’s Food and Mood Centre, is returning to explain more about how diet, probiotics and gut microbiota can influence mental health, mood, behaviour and brain development based on emerging evidence and research. TIM WINTON - TENDER HEARTS, SONS OF BRUTES In his only regional Victorian appearance, acclaimed Australian author Tim Winton will explore his new novel, 'The Shepherd's Hut' as he delivers a powerful meditation on lost boys and the riptide of toxic masculinity. With a specially commissioned soundscape and photographic interludes, this is an hour-long event exploring our most bewildering and desolate landscape – contemporary manhood. OPEN MIND SERIES Annual Lecture in Memory of Fiona Baranowski Former Geelong Regional Libraries staff member, Fiona Baranowski, who is remembered for her long history and valuable contribution to library services in the Geelong region, passed away suddenly in March 2015. Fiona established the Open Mind Lectures when working with us and this event is presented in her memory.
Are Australia’s First People the Foundation to Our National Identity? On the eve of International Women's Day, the prominent elder of the Wergaia people and Wamba Wamba descendant, Eleanor Bourke will share her perspective on our most recent shared cultural history and how this has influenced our collective notion of the Australian cultural identity. In a time when Australia is struggling with its national identity, a better resolution will come from true recognition of the role of Australia’s First People in our society. ABOUT ELEANOR BOURKE: Eleanor Bourke's career in Aboriginal affairs spans four decades in Victoria, the ACT and South Australia. In 2005 she became a Native titleholder through Victoria’s historic first positive determination, known as the Wotjobaluk native title claim, which includes the Wergaia, Jardwa, Jardwajarli and Japagulk and in 2010 Eleanor was inducted into the Victorian Women's Honour Roll. Eleanor has been described as "a pioneering female Aboriginal activist in the 1960s, devoting herself to increasing awareness, appreciation and advancement of Aboriginal people and improving understanding between Aborigines and non-Aborigines." She has held professorial positions at the Aboriginal Research Institute, University of South Australia and the Centre for Aboriginal and Islander Studies at Monash University. She has lectured on Indigenous issues nationally and internationally. Eleanor is currently chair of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council (VAHC) and is a member of the Victorian Government’s Treaty Working Group.

NATALIE SENJOV-MAKOHON GEELONG'S UKRAINIAN HERITAGE Join Dr Natalie Senjov-Makohon as she discusses her book 'Two Twigs', the story of the journey taken by two groups in the 1950s and early 1960s to settle in and contribute to Geelong. The first group began to arrive in Australia in 1948, and the other group’s arrival began in 1952.
