Across all our branches there are Author Encounters and workshops to ignite your interests, children’s and youth activities including a special school holiday offering, as well as technology training for all ages and abilities. HUMAN RIGHTS ARTS & FILM FESTIVAL - FILM STEP Join us for the screening of ‘STEP’ by Amanda Lipitz. The true-life story of a girls’ high-school step team set against the background of Baltimore. These young women learn to laugh, love and thrive – on and off the stage – even when the world seems to work against them. Empowered by their teachers, teammates, counsellors, coaches and families, they chase their ultimate dreams: to win a step championship and to be accepted into college. NATE DIMEO - THE MEMORY PALACE Nate DiMeo is the voice and producer of ‘The Memory Palace’, a celebrated storytelling podcast about the past. Based in Los Angeles, Nate's recently been the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s artist in residence. Hear Nate DiMeo talk through a handful of prompts which ultimately blossomed into Memory Palace stories – and discuss how he’s built a creative livelihood from his writing. This event is part of The Creative Exchange, presented in partnership with Creative Victoria and The Wheeler Centre, hosted by Jon Tjhia.

THE BAD DIARIES SALON #FIRST The Bad Diaries Salon was established mid-2017 with a call out on Twitter – were there any writers who still had their old, bad teenage diaries, and would they be prepared to read them live? The response was overwhelming. Six published authors read for ten minutes each from their early, unedited works. Featuring Robert Gott (The Port Fairy Murders), Rosalie Ham (The Dressmaker), Tracy Farr (The Hope Fault), Jock Serong (The Rules of Backyard Cricket), Angela Savage (The Dying Beach) and Leah Kaminsky (The Waiting Room) and moderated by Jenny Ackland (Little Gods). Join us for this special event as researcher and academic Dr Sally Gray joins Geelong Gallery Director Jason Smith to discuss her book 'Friends, Fashion and Fabulousness: The Making of an Australian Style'. Linking fashion, art, sexual politics and diverse urban subcultures, four friends in particular form her central narrative: fashion designers Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson and artists Peter Tully and David McDiarmid. BOB MURPHY – LEATHER SOUL Bob Murphy has never been a typical footballer. Music buff, The Age columnist and Winnebago driver, he is as comfortable in a Fitzroy café or the front bar of a grungy pub, as he is in the locker room. Join him as he discusses his unique memoir, covering his seventeen-year career, including his three years as captain of the Bulldogs, exploring the people, places and events that have shaped him. CAROLINE JANE KNIGHT – HIGH TEA WITH GREAT AUNT JANE AUSTEN Caroline Jane Knight shares more than Jane Austen’s name and DNA. Caroline is the last Austen descendent to grow up in Chawton on the ancestral estate where Jane herself lived and wrote. Join Caroline for a very special High Tea as she shares her unique childhood growing up surrounded by four hundred years of family history in the heart of great aunt Jane’s literary legacy, private family photographs and how Jane Austen’s extraordinary popularity has changed the lives of her Chawton family today. OPEN MIND SERIES Celeste Liddle is an opinion writer, a trade unionist and currently serves as the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Organiser of the National Tertiary Education Union. CELESTE LIDDLE – BECAUSE OF HER, WE CAN In acknowledgment of NAIDOC Week 2018, accomplished public speaker, Celeste Liddle will present this quarter’s Open Mind Lecture on the topic of 'Because of Her, We Can'. An Arrernte woman, Celeste Liddle is an opinion writer, a trade unionist and currently serves as the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Organiser of the National Tertiary Education Union. Celeste started her blog 'Rantings of an Aboriginal Feminist' in June 2012 as a home for her prolific writing. Hear Celeste's views as a social commentator and activist who, in 2017, was inducted into the Victorian Women’s Honour Roll for her work in Indigenous Australian culture and feminism. AUTHOR ENCOUNTERS Meet these authors and hear about their books and the writing process SHOKOOFEH AZAR - THE ENLIGHTENMENT OF THE GREENGAGE TREE. Don’t miss this chance to meet and hear former journalist and writer Shokoofeh Azar discuss her novel 'The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree'. Forced to leave Iran with her family in 2011, she was accepted as a political refugee by Australia; Shokoofeh has made her home locally. Her extraordinarily powerful novel has been short-listed for this year’s Stella Prize and is set in Iran as a reimagining of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. KATE WILD - WAITING FOR ELIJAH In 2009, in the NSW country town of Armidale, a mentally ill young man, 24-yearold Elijah Holcombe is shot dead by a police officer. The shooting devastates Elijah’s family and the police officer alike. 'Waiting for Elijah' is the culmination of three-time Walkley Award-winner journalist Kate Wild’s six-year investigation – an investigation that not only seeks to answer questions, but also poses important questions of its own. SPIRI TSINTZIRAS – MY IKARIA A few years ago, Spiri Tsintziras found herself mentally, physically and spiritually depleted – raising kids, running a household and managing a business and asked "What is it all for?". Spiri’s quest for a healthier, more nourishing life took her from her suburban home in Melbourne to her family’s homeland, the small Greek island of Ikaria. The people of Ikaria – part of the famous ‘Blue Zone’ – live happy, healthy and long lives. Inspired by their example, Spiri’s heartwarming memoir encourages us to put our health and happiness first. BACK TO BROADY: GROWING UP IN BROADMEADOWS Caroline Van de Pol, a journalist and academic, will discuss the challenges of writing true stories about family and the migrant experience of Melbourne in the 60s, alongside her work with new immigrants.
