ON THE COVER

THIS SUMMER WILL BE LIKE NO OTHER FOR LIBRARY LOVERS OF GREATER GEELONG & SURROUNDS. It is the Summer we welcome the brilliant new Geelong Library & Heritage Centre (The Dome). Inspired by the domed-shaped reading rooms of great libraries around the world, this iconic addition to our skyline includes a diverse collection of print, multimedia and heritage items, archival standard Heritage Centre repository and reading room, free high-speed WiFi, high-end technology including gaming machines, internet-access computers and mobile devices, smart tables, virtual reality and 3D printing. An entire floor is dedicated to children and young people and a fifth-floor major event space reveals spectacular bay views. In early 2016 a café will open on the ground floor with outdoor decks making good use of the idyllic Johnstone Park location. This beautiful, technology-rich building is filled with inspiring spaces for reading, studying, meeting and discovering. We continue to host a wonderful events program across all of our library branches and I invite you to explore the wonderful offer this Summer. INSIDE THE DOME (DYE 2) – MURRAY FREDERICKS AND TOM SCHUTZINGER This immersive video and sound installation transports the viewer to the edge of the world, space and time within the striking domed architecture of the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre. Filmed and recorded within the geodesic dome of an abandoned missile detection facility in Greenland (known as DYE 2), once part of a network of Cold War era structures, the breathtaking visuals and multi-layered soundscape form an installation in which past and present collide. 21 November to 7 February A Geelong Gallery exhibition

SPECIAL EVENTS STEREO STORIES – A TIME, A PLACE, A TIME Stereo Stories is a delightful way to engage with music and literature. You might even find yourself dancing! Featuring writers and musicians onstage together. Musicians weave in and out of narrative as writers read their stories, including stories set locally. JOHN BRUMBY AND JOEL DEANE IN CONVERSATION Former Premier John Brumby and author and former Labour party press secretary Joel Deane will chat about their new books, The Long Haul: Lessons From Public Life and Catch & Kill: The Politics of Power. The conversation will range from the challenges and opportunities facing Australia to the prospect of real political reform and the need for strong leadership in a rapidly changing world. AUTHOR ENCOUNTERS Meet these authors and hear about their books and the writing process GARRY DISHER – THE HEAT Garry Disher is one of Australia’s most prolific and highly acclaimed literary crime novelists. He has won numerous awards, including the German Crime Prize (twice) and two Ned Kelly Best Crime novel awards, for Chain of Evidence and Wyatt. LUCY SUSSEX – BLOCKBUSTER The story of the crime novel written by Fergus Hume, set in Melbourne in the 19th Century is the subject of Lucy Sussex's new work. She has writen award-winning fiction including books for younger readers and the novel The Scarlet Rider. Hear Lucy discuss her latest book based on this intriguing true story of a global publishing phenomenon. Wednesday 2 December Belmont 6.30-7.30pm

MAUREEN MCCARTHY – STAY WITH ME Acclaimed author Maureen McCarthy’s newest novel explores the power of destructive relationships and the impact of mental illness from one generation to the next. Based on the story of her grandmother’s experience, Maureen McCarthy’s novel is evocative, absorbing and formidable. TRAUDI ALLEN – JOHN PERCEVAL Traudi Allen has published widely on Australian art, for many years she contributed interviews and documentaries on art subjects to ABC radio and she has lectured in art history at Melbourne’s RMIT and Monash University. KIRSTY METCALF – I CAN SEE MERMAIDS Local author, Kirsty Metcalf, will read from her beautifully illustrated children’s book I Can See Mermaids. Inspired by the nature-rich Great Ocean Road, a selection of the exquisite original illustrations will be on display and there will also be a special mermaid colouring-in activity for children to enjoy. MEG ULMAN AND PATRICK JONES – THE ART OF FREE TRAVEL: A FRUGAL FAMILY ADVENTURE Hear about Patrick and Meg's remarkable family adventure, an epic 6,000km yearlong cycling journey along Australia’s east coast. Living on a diet of free food, bush tucker, and the occasional fresh road kill. The family spent time in Aboriginal communities and anti-fracking blockades, whilst documenting edible plants. LESLEY HARDING AND KENDRAH MORGAN – MODERN LOVE – THE LIVES OF JOHN AND SUNDAY REED Lesley Harding and Kendrah Morgan are curators at Heide Museum of Modern Art and authors of Sunday’s Kitchen and Sunday’s Garden. Part romance, part tragedy, Modern Love explores the complex lives of John & Sunday Reed, champions of successive generations of Australian artists and writers. This fascinating account details the Reeds' artistic endeavours and passionate personal entanglements. Wednesday 10 February The High Ground, Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 1.00-2.00pm

GAIL MORTIMER – 13 WISE WOMEN We often dream about making changes to our lives or creating something that’s bigger than ourselves. In Geelong thirteen women have done just that and have documented their stories in a book, 13 Wise Women. Join some of these wise women as they discuss their lives. J M GREEN – GOOD MONEY Good Money is the first crime-noir novel featuring social worker Stella Hardy. It was shortlisted in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an unpublished manuscript. J M Green divides her time between writing and working as a librarian. RENATA SINGER – OLDER AND BOLDER: LIFE AFTER 60 For the first time in history, women can expect to live well from their sixties for another three decades. STEPHEN BYGRAVE, BEYOND ZERO EMISSIONS – THE ENERGY FREEDOM HOME How to wipe out electricity and gas bills in nine steps. There are simple, practical ways to reduce our demand for energy and to change where we get it from. The Energy-Freedom Home explains nine steps that can be taken – in any order – to become more energy efficient. Stephen Bygraves from Beyond Zero Emissions will explain each step.
