Inaugural Annual Lecture in Memory of Fiona Baranowski

Meet these authors and hear about their books and the writing process

Fiona Baranowski, who is remembered for her long history and contribution to library services in the Geelong Region, passed away suddenly in March 2015. Fiona was part of our team at the Geelong Regional Library Corporation in the early nineties and then again in 2009 until 2012 when she joined Melbourne Library Service.

ARNOLD ZABLE – THE FIGHTER

Fiona was a creative thinker and in her role as Literary Events and Projects Coordinator introduced the innovative Open Mind Lecture Series that continues today as an important part of the library’s lifelong learning and events program. It is fitting that we introduce the lecture as part of this series in March 2016. It is a year since Fiona’s passing and this week International Women’s Day is celebrated. Women’s rights was an issue of passionate interest to Fiona and Kirsty Sword Gusmão is an excellent choice of speaker for this inaugural lecture. Geelong Regional Library staff and community remember Fiona Baranowski.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY – KIRSTY SWORD GUSMAO Presenting the inaugural Annual Lecture in Memory of Fiona Baranowski, Ms Sword Gusmão will share some insights into her journey from human rights activist to First Lady of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. Through establishment of the Alola Foundation, she embarked upon a mission to give women a voice in the rebuilding of Timor-Leste, a nation emerging from centuries of colonial rule, including two decades of a brutal military occupation. In her presentation she will share some of the highs and lows of her work in the areas of education, women’s empowerment and maternal and child health. Thursday 10 March The High Ground, Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6.30-7.45pm

04

Arnold Zable is a highly acclaimed novelist, storyteller, educator and human rights advocate. His latest novel, The Fighter, is a moving and poetic portrait of a compassionate man. This is the story of Henry Nissen, a champion boxer, and boy from Amess Street in working-class Carlton working to give the disaffected another chance. This is a compelling window into the unnoticed recesses of Melbourne. Tuesday 10 May The High Ground, Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6.30-7.30pm

TONI JORDAN – OUR TINY, USELESS HEARTS Toni Jordan is an internationally published author based in Melbourne. Her new novel, Our Tiny, Useless Hearts, is full of wit, wisdom and flair, and has been described as brilliant and hilarious. Her first book, Addition, won the 2008 Indie Award for Best Debut Novel, was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award in 2009, and has been published in sixteen countries. Her followup novel Nine Days won the 2013 Indie Award and was named as one of Kirkus' best historical novels of 2013. Wednesday 25 May The High Ground, Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6.30-7.30pm
