SUMMER IS HERE AND WE HOPE THAT YOU’VE LINED UP YOUR LIST OF GREAT READS FOR THE SUMMER. Enjoy your summer days with a selection of fantastic events at your library. In December we welcome Rosalie Ham, author of The Dressmaker which has enjoyed great international success in movie form starring the fabulous Kate Winslet. A special Pivot Connect Community Day in December will provide opportunities for people of all ages to engage with emerging technologies and ideas in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and maths. We have an Author Encounter lined up with one of Australia’s most significant and popular historians, Professor Geoffrey Blainey. We will also be part of a radio play broadcast for UNESCO World Radio Day next February. Of course, we will help give children and young people a break from the sun and sand over the long summer break with a selection of exciting events especially for them. SUSTAINABLE GARDENING
Rosalie Ham’s debut novel The Dressmaker was published in 2000 and became an instant classic and book-club favourite. Over fifteen years later it was released as a star-studded film starring Kate Winslet and has enjoyed a renaissance with readers embracing this gothic tale of love, betrayal and high couture. Meet and hear Rosalie in conversation as she discusses the incredible success of her novel and the experience of seeing her work blossom from the page to the screen.
Gardening expert, Lorna Martin, has worked for many years establishing community gardens, has her own gardening business and is an advocate for sustainable gardening. In this session she will discuss what it means to garden sustainably, and provide tips on the best time to prune and plant fruits and vegetables. Lorna will also discuss creating a garden without a backyard and growing your own fresh, organic food to help live a happier and healthier life.

GEOFFREY BLAINEY – THE STORY OF AUSTRALIA’S PEOPLE VOLUME II Professor Geoffrey Blainey is one of Australia's most significant and popular historians. In Volume II of The Story of Australia's People, Geoffrey Blainey continues his account of the history of this country from the early Gold Rush to the present day, completing the story of our nation and its people. Hear him speak about this final instalment of his ambitious two-part work, and the culmination of the lifework of Australia's most prolific and wide-ranging historian. NOAH'S STORY – SUNBEAR CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL FOUNDER Noah was moved to action by a visit to Borneo’s Sun Bear Conservation Centre at the age of four where he learned of the endangered livelihood of the Sun Bear. The Sun Bear Children's Festival was founded to raise awareness for ALL endangered wildlife, creating the opportunity for ALL children to share their love of animals and raise awareness and funds for endangered wildlife in Australia and overseas. Come and learn about Noah’s motivation and how his vision for an annual Sun Bear Festival came to fruition. The Pivot Connect Community Festival on Saturday 3 December is a free event that will engage and excite people about science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, along with virtual and augmented reality technology. In partnership with the City of Greater Geelong, Pivot Summit and Cultural Precinct partners. PROFESSOR BUNSEN'S SPECTACULAR SCIENCE SHOW Join Professor Bunsen for an energetic experiment-filled show packed with scientific facts and fun. THE SHARING ECONOMY – BUILDING STRONGER COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS Keynote speaker Darren Sharp will discuss the 'Sharing Economy', or connecting supply and demand at the peer-to-peer level. This is creating new innovative enterprises allowing for efficiency, reduced waste and increased collaboration. The presentation will showcase local and international case studies that demonstrate how the Sharing Economy is fostering digital and social inclusion to build stronger community connections. Two lightning talks and a Q&A session will follow with documentary maker Dr Fiona Gray and Kathy Reid, digital consultant and instigator of Creative Geelong Makerspace.
