WELCOME

ON THE COVER

AUTUMN HAS ARRIVED, AND WITH IT COME SOME EXCITING EVENTS AT YOUR LIBRARIES. Stephanie Alexander joins us to discuss the new edition of her tome Kitchen Garden Companion: Cooking. We celebrate the Australian Heritage Festival with an examination of architecture as seen through art with Jennifer Bantow, the history of Geelong’s built heritage with David Rowe, and heritage trees of the botanic gardens with botanical artist Dolores Skowronski-Malloni. Authors of Chaos to Calm – Take Control with Confidence, Shannah Kennedy and Lydall Mitchell will encourage us to address wellness in all aspects of life and overcome the stresses of modern living. Chloe Shorten will discuss the dynamics of stepfamilies, and Kasey Edwards will talk about the guilt that many women may feel due to society’s expectations. There are also many events that will explore cultural and technological subjects, whether you are interested in discussing books or learning the ins-and-outs of social media. Kids and young adults are also catered for with holiday programs that teach the nimble art of coding or calligraphy, as well as regular events that vary from Lego to manga. Make 2017 a productive year with one of our events. With such a variety there should be something for everyone. Cr Margot Smith / Chair Geelong Regional Library Corporation

CATHERINE FOX – STOP FIXING WOMEN: WHY BUILDING FAIRER WORKPLACES IS EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS Catherine Fox, a journalist, author and presenter will examine why genuine progress for women in the workplace is still too slow. The pay gap is 17.9%, of all the CEO's of top companies only 3% are women, and women have half the superannuation savings of men. Fortunately many organisations are starting to recognise that systemic bias is the problem and we need to change the rules, not the women. In celebration of International Women's Day. Monday 6 March Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6.30-7.30pm

OPEN MIND LECTURES

OPEN MIND LECTURES Annual Lecture in Memory of Fiona Baranowski Former Geelong Regional Libraries staff member, Fiona Baranowski, who is remembered for her long history and valuable contribution to library services in the Geelong region, passed away suddenly in March 2015. Fiona established the Open Mind Lectures when working with us and the first lecture in the 2017 Open Mind Lecture Series is presented in her memory. This year it will be presented by Professor Catharine Lumby who will explore the way social media is transforming the personal lives of young people and how they form relationships – a topic that will resonate with the Open Mind audience and continue Fiona's legacy of providing engaging and expert insights into contemporary issues.

PROFESSOR CATHARINE LUMBY Drawing on extensive research, Professor Lumby will recount what young people have to say about love, sex and identity in the online and social media era, and ask what we can all do to help young people to make ethical decisions. Catharine Lumby is a Professor of Media at Macquarie University. A former journalist, she is the author of six books, the founding Chair of the Media and Communications Department at the University of Sydney and the founding Director of the Journalism and Media Research Centre at UNSW. She is currently writing a biography of the writer Frank Moorhouse and writes a regular column for The Guardian. Monday 8 May Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6.30-7.30pm

AUTHOR ENCOUNTERS

AUTHOR ENCOUNTERS Meet these authors and hear about their books and the writing process PATRICIA & DON EDGAR – PEAK: REINVENTING MIDDLE AGE Issues surrounding our ageing population are regularly in the news: from healthcare to retirement it seems there are many unanswered questions about how our society will learn to live with longevity. In PEAK, Patricia Edgar (author of IN PRAISE OF AGEING) and her husband Don argue that while ‘Middle Age’ once referred to anyone 40+, it should now more broadly encompass those from ages 50–75. People are retiring from work much later and remaining active members of the community well beyond their 60s, and it's time to rethink our ideas about ageing and our emphasis on youth as the best years of life. Thursday 23 March Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6.30-7.30pm
