ON THE COVER
Welcome to our Spring program, bursting with special events, author talks and learning opportunities for people of all ages. This November sees the return of the Word for Word National Non-Fiction Festival – Australia’s only festival dedicated to non-fiction writing. Don’t miss special festival preview events taking place in September: Antony Loewenstein on his book Pills, Powder and Smoke, which investigates the global war on drugs; and Rebekah Roberston discussing About a Girl, the extraordinary personal story of raising her transgender child (page 6). Our region is home to a wealth of wonderful authors, and this season we are proud to showcase several local writers. Highlights include the official launch of Miles Franklin-shortlisted author Favel Parrett’s new novel There Was Still Love; Christian White, talking about The Wife and the Widow, the much anticipated follow-up to his bestseller, The Nowhere Child; and Winter Trilogy author Mark Smith, who will run a special workshop for budding young writers at Torquay Library. Don’t miss our diverse program of events to celebrate the Seniors Festival (pages 8-10) including a free concert performance by Orchestra Geelong, presented in partnership with Geelong Seniors Festival. I look forward to seeing you at the library. Cr Ron Nelson / Chair Geelong Regional Library Corporation

OPEN MIND SERIES
OPEN MIND SERIES Annual Lecture in memory of Fiona Baranowski Former staff member of Geelong Regional Libraries, Fiona Baranowski, who is remembered for her long history and valuable contribution to the library services in the Geelong Region, passed away suddenly in March 2015. Fiona established the Open Mind Lectures and this event is presented in her memory.
REFUGEE RIGHTS AND POLICY WRONGS – FIONA CHONG Join us for a special presentation on one of the most pressing issues facing the world today – finding safe and durable solutions for refugees and other forced migrants globally. At a time when there are more people in need of refugee protection than at any time since World War II, Australia’s policies of deterrence are indefensible. They violate Australia’s obligations under international law – obligations to which our Government has voluntarily agreed. They do nothing to address the underlying conditions that lead people to take boat journeys in the first place – persecution and human rights violations at home, and the lack of alternative pathways to safety. Australia has simply pushed the problem away – out of sight, out of mind. In Refugee Rights and Policy Wrongs, authors Jane McAdam and Fiona Chong argue that a radically different approach is possible – one that is consistent with international refugee and human rights law. According to McAdam and Chong, Australia is one of the world’s most harmonious, multicultural and socially mobile countries, and we have the capacity to accommodate and
celebrate diversity, and to be generous towards those who seek our protection. Fiona Chong is a lawyer and was recently a Human Rights Fellow in the Master of Laws program at Columbia University. She has previously worked as a lawyer at the Refugee Advice and Casework Service and as a Postgraduate Public Interest Fellow at Refugees International. She and Jane McAdam are the authors of Refugee Rights and Policy Wrongs: A frank, up-todate guide by experts and Refugees: Why seeking asylum is legal and Australia's policies are not.
