MARCH – MAY 2013
AUT U EDIT MN ION
“ W elco m e ” It’s my pleasure to present you with the Geelong Regional Library Corporation’s events and programs brochure for March to May 2013. Your libraries are offering a great number and array of activities and events this Autumn. We place special emphasis on the development of reading literacy and with this in mind, provide a huge range of children’s and youth activities. We are also helping the community keep pace with changes in technology through our educational programming. Libraries are community spaces. Our programming for adults is also extensive with book chats, poetry, author events, lectures and many other activities to enjoy. Enjoy a visit to your local library and join in with the events and activities that interest you. This brochure details opportunities for every community member to participate and learn. We hope to see you in the libraries regularly. There is something for everyone. Cr Andy Richards Chair 2013 Geelong Regional Library Corporation Board Members: Cr Tony Ansett, Cr Helene Cameron, Cr Kylie Fisher, Cr Nathan Hansford, Cr Rod Macdonald, Cr Andy Richards (Chair), Cr Margot Smith (Deputy Chair).

Jill Stark, High Sobriety
Ross McMullin, Farewell Dear People
Jill Stark is a Sunday Age writer specialising in public health issues who woke up on New Year's Day 2011 with a hangover to beat all hangovers and decided that it was time to take a break from drinking. The result of this year of abstinence is High Sobriety, a sobering and very personal look at Australia's troubled relationship with alcohol consumption.
Noted historian and biographer Ross McMullin's Farewell Dear People tells the stories of ten young men who exemplified Australia's lost generation from the heavy toll suffered during World War I. From a Rhodes scholar to an acclaimed medical researcher, the fascinating biographies explored in this book seek to fill the gaps in our collective memory.

Kate Forsyth, The Wild Girl
Peter Stanley, Black Saturday at Steels Creek
In this, the 200th anniversary year of the Grimm Brothers Fairytales, discover The Wild Girl: the untold story of Dortchen Wild, who was the source of some of the most powerful and compelling stories in the famous fairy tale collection and the true love of Wilhelm Grimm. Author Kate Forsyth is the award winning, internationally bestselling author of more than twenty books including The Witches of Eileanan and Rhiannon’s Ride series and her meticulous research has uncovered a tale of drama and passion not to be missed.
The Black Saturday bushfires killed 173 people – ten of those people died in Steels Creek, a small community on Melbourne’s fringe. Prize-winning historian Peter Stanley tells the dramatic stories of this small town on that one terrifying evening. But Black Saturday at Steels Creek also tells the tale of a community and how, over the weeks and years that followed, they lived with the aftermath of the fire.
