OPEN MIND SERIES

OPEN MIND SERIES PETER HARTCHER – QUARTERLY ESSAY: RED FLAG: WAKING UP TO CHINA’S CHALLENGE China has become a key nation for Australia’s future – for our security, economy and identity. But what are China’s intentions when it comes to Australia? In this gripping account, Peter Hartcher shows how Beijing stepped up its campaign for influence, over hearts and minds, mineral and agricultural resources, media outlets and sea lanes. Reactions so far have included panic, xenophobia and all-the-way-with-the-USA, but the challenge now is to think hard about the national interest and respond with wisdom to a changed world. This urgent, authoritative essay blends reporting and analysis, and covers the local scene as well as the larger geopolitical picture. It casts fresh light on Beijing’s plans and actions, and outlines a way forward. “Australia and China have got rich together. For Australia, that is quite enough. But China’s government wants more. As much power and influence over Australia as it can possibly get, using fair means or foul. But ... what Beijing can get is limited not only by China’s abilities, but also by Australia’s will. In each case where Chinese officials or agents attempted to intrude, they met Australian resistance. And failed. For all its power, China is neither allpowerful nor irresistible. Australia can shape its engagement with Beijing.” Peter Hartcher, Red Flag

Peter Hartcher is the political and international editor of The Sydney Morning Herald. His books include Bubble Man, The Sweet Spot and To the Bitter End. His first Quarterly Essay, Bipolar Nation, was published in 2007. Thursday 2 April Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6:30-7:30pm

AUTHOR ENCOUNTERS Meet these authors and hear about their books and the writing process

JIM HAYNES – MATTHEW FLINDERS A story of bravery, daring, imprisonment and romance - the true life of a village lad who ran away to sea, lived more adventures in his short lifetime than most of us can dream of and died almost forgotten by the British but not by the people of the land he charted and named. A tale of war at sea, shipwrecks, intrigue, tragedy and romance from Jim's Australia's Best Sea Stories collection. Tuesday 10 March Drysdale 2:30-3:30pm

FIONA LOWE – JUST AN ORDINARY FAMILY Every family has its secrets... Bestselling Australian author Fiona Lowe wields a deft hand, creating an utterly addictive story about four women and their complicated family lives that will have you questioning your own perceptions of what family is. As the family implodes, the fallout for these four women will be inescapable. Wednesday 4 March Waurn Ponds 6:30-7:30pm

LAURA WATERS – BEWILDERED An inspiring story about how Laura walked from one end of New Zealand to the other, a journey that fundamentally changed the course of her life. There are many themes within her journey that seem to resonate with many people: overcoming anxiety, the healing power of nature, overcoming fears, and finding and following an authentic life path. Thursday 12 March Torquay 6:00-7:00pm

JIM HAYNES – AUSTRALIA’S MOST UNBELIEVABLE TRUE STORIES Exploring some of Australia’s oddest and most amazing true stories, Jim Haynes looks at the truth behind some of our most commonly believed Aussie myths. These are stories Jim collected and explained in his books Australia's Most Unbelievable True Stories, Australia's Best Unknown Stories and Best Australian Yarns. Wednesday 11 March Bannockburn 2:30-3:30pm

11

JUDITH HOARE – THE WOMAN WHO CRACKED THE ANXIETY CODE The true story of the little-known mentalhealth pioneer who revolutionised how we see the defining problem of our era: anxiety. The international bestseller Self-Help for Your Nerves has helped tens of millions of people, and continues to do so. Yet even as letters and phone calls from readers around the world flooded in, thanking her for helping to improve — and in some cases to save — their lives, Dr Claire Weekes was dismissed as underqualified and overly populist by the psychiatric establishment. Just who was this woman?

ROB MCCUBBIN – THE PENPONT SAGA Sometimes fate comes in and changes your whole life. That’s what happened to Rob in the Currie Library on King Island on a rainy day. Rob had found a book on local shipwrecks and found the paragraph that was to steer him on a different course. Scotland to Australia in the mid 1800s would have seemed like a present day voyage to the moon! Excitement, fear of the unknown, thirst for a better life, or an escape from past lives for some. All these splashed out onto the canvas of the Australian bush during and after the Gold Rushes, building The Penpont Saga. Thursday 12 March Leopold 6:30-7:30pm

GRAEME KINROSS-SMITH – WORDS ON THE PAGE AND IN THE AIR Graeme Kinross-Smith will present readings from his novel, poetry, short fiction and memoir — and perhaps family history — as well as offering revelations about the literary life, including the perils of research and the long journey to 'bestsellerdom'. Graeme always welcomes questions. He’s always asking them… Monday 23 March Highton 10:00-11:30am

S.M. ISAAC – RIVER OF DIAMONDS A mechanic who can save the world. A mercenary who should hide from it. Just another day living the dream in postRise Australia. Rosa lives in one of the last idyllic settlements since the Rise. Unlike those in other communities, she has grown up with access to ample food, fresh water, and safety — but the community’s secretive nature, and the fact they do not offer help to outsiders, troubles her. So when Rosa finds a map that could lead to a fortune in fresh water — a scarce commodity — she embarks on a plan to make a real difference to the world. The only problem? There’s an apocalyptic wasteland between her and possible salvation. Rosa has a map, a mercenary, and a hope to salvage the future. Saturday 21 March Geelong West 3:30-4:45pm

13

ABDI ADEN – SHINING: THE STORY OF A LUCKY MAN Abdi Aden was 15 years old when Somalia’s vicious civil war hit Mogadishu and he lost contact with his family. At the age of 16 Abdi arrived in Melbourne with no English, no family or friends, no money and no home. Against all odds he completed his education, went to University and became a youth worker. Abdi is a most inspiring man, who is constantly thankful for his life and what he has. Everything he has endured and achieved is testament to his quiet strength, courage and resilience. Wednesday 25 March Waurn Ponds 6:30-7:30pm

CHRISTINE SYKES – THE CHANGING ROOM Inspired by the women behind the charity Dress for Success, The Changing Room is an uplifting and heart-warming story of female empowerment, proving that there is more to fashion than just clothes. A story of hope and second chances and the power of female friendship, The Changing Room is contemporary women’s fiction at its best – with a social cause at the heart. Wednesday 1 April Belmont 6:30-7:30pm

GARRY DISHER – PEACE Constable Paul Hirschhausen runs a onecop station in the dry farming country south of the Flinders Ranges. He’s still new in town but the community work— welfare checks and working bees—is starting to pay off. Now Christmas is here and, apart from a grass fire, two boys stealing a ute and Brenda Flann entering the front bar of the pub without exiting her car, Hirsch’s life has been peaceful. Until he’s called to a strange, vicious incident in Kitchener Street. And Sydney police ask him to look in on a family living outside town on a forgotten back road. Suddenly, it doesn’t look like a season of goodwill at all. Wednesday 15 April Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6:30-7:30pm

ROB HUNTER – DAY 9 AT WOOREEN: KIDNAPPED WITH NINE CHILDREN Kidnapped on his ninth day of teaching with nine students, Rob Hunter retells the story of how Edwin John Eastwood, the Faraday kidnapper, having escaped from prison, burst into his remote South Gippsland school and at gun point, took Rob and his nine students hostage. Day 9 at Wooreen brings alive the story of the Wooreen State School kidnapping of 1977. Rob celebrates the healing that is possible from such pain and torment, giving his audience renewed hope in a troubled world. Thursday 16 April Leopold 6:00-7:00pm

15

NICK RICHARDSON – 1956 Debunking one of the hardiest clichés in Australian history: that the 1950s was a dull decade, Nick Richardson peels back the layers to reveal Australia at a critical moment in time. By the time the ’60s came around, Australia was already expanding its outlook — politically, economically, and culturally — and central to this were the events of 1956. Nick brilliantly recreates the broader events surrounding the Melbourne Olympics at the end of 1956, as well as the dramas of the Games themselves. Throughout, he also follows a range of men and women who were touched by this transformation, to illuminate the personal consequences of being part of Australia’s pivotal year.

MARCUS RILEY – BOOMING: A LIFE CHANGING PHILOSOPHY FOR AGEING WELL Ageing. It’s an inevitable part of living and not always looked at in a favourable light. But what if we all had the ability to age well? Booming is the result of Marcus’ 20 years’ experience in the ageing industry. He advocates that by embracing positivity, planning how you want to live the rest of your life and understanding the need for purpose, we can all age successfully. An inspiring, achievable and essential guide for people of all ages. Tuesday 21 April Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6:30-7:30pm

FRED CAHIR & BART ZIINO – THE MISSING When WWI brought Australians face to face with mass death, a Red Cross Information Bureau and post-war graves workers laboured to help families grieve for the missing. Join us for a film screening of the short documentary The Missing followed by a conversation with historians Associate Professor Fred Cahir of Federation University and Dr Bart Ziino of Deakin University. Thursday 30 April Leopold 6:00-7:30pm

TOM KENEALLY – THE DICKENS BOY In the late 1800s, rather than run the risk of his under-achieving sons tarnishing his reputation at home, Charles Dickens sent two of them to Australia. The tenth child of Charles Dickens, Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens, known as Plorn, had consistently proved unable ‘to apply himself’ to school or life. So aged sixteen, he is sent, as his brother Alfred was before him, to Australia. This is Tom Keneally in his most familiar terrain. Taking historical figures and events and reimagining them with verve, compassion and humour. Wednesday 29 April Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6:30-7:30pm

17

KATHY LETTE – HRT (HUSBAND REPLACEMENT THERAPY) What do you when you’re told you’ve got terminal cancer at 50? Take up crochet, convert to religion and bow out gracefully? Or ditch your husband of twenty years, abandon your demanding kids, leave your job, desert your bossy, octogenarian mother, cash in your life savings and take your two sisters on a luxury cruise? Courageous? Or ruthlessly selfish? Tuesday 5 May Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6:30-7:30pm

RHONDA MATHESON-BROWNE – BUSH A whisper of humour clashes recklessly with evil and interweaves intricately like the tangled undergrowth of the Otway State Park rainforest, in Bush. Complex, life-changing decisions collide in the cool climate ecosystems of the most south-western coastline of Australia. Love struggles to find life giving air, mateship is wind swept and complex relationships are crushed – some eroded like the sandstone cliff faces and the decomposing leaf litter underfoot. Tuesday 12 May Ocean Grove 6:30-7:30pm

ROBYN ANNEAR – NOTHING NEW ‘Given the way we live now,’ writes Robyn Annear, ‘it would be easy to suppose that newness has always been venerated.’ But as this wonderfully entertaining short history makes clear, modern consumerism is an aberration. Mostly, everyday objects—from cast-off cookware to clothing worn down to rags—have enjoyed long lives and the appreciation of serial owners. Nothing New is itself an emporium: a treasure store of anecdotes and little-known facts that will intrigue and enlighten the devoted bargain-hunter and the dilettante browser alike. Wednesday 13 May Newcomb 6:30-7:30pm

STEF GEMMILL – 20 DAYS IN THE SLUSH PILE Stef Gemmill is a children's author, her picture book A Home for Luna was published in 2019 and her next books In My Dreams and Toy Mountain are due soon. Book shop owner and author Lorraine Smith joins us to reveal the fascinating results of her 18 months of research into this old world discovery. Thursday 28 May Leopold 6:30-7:30pm

THE BRONZE STORIES: GEELONG UNEARTHED PROJECT

EXPLORING LARA’S PAST From Duck Ponds to Lara, our history extends from early pioneer times of agriculture and a small community to the thriving and ever expanding town we see today. The Lara Heritage & Historical Inc. will present a talk on the early history of Lara; discussing early families, how they made a name for themselves, and what challenges they may have faced along the way; from fire to flood. Get to know what has shaped the town we see today. They will also give an insight into their latest book Stories of Settlers at Lara The Farming Families of the Closer Settlement Board's Lara Estate 1907.

Dr Maria Takolander will share her role in both unearthing and writing the ten incredible stories about the Wadawurrung people, convicts, migrants, Geelong’s maritime history, the gold rush, WWI and WWII, that have been captured and now shared with the community in the Bronze Stories: Geelong Unearthed Project. Bronze Stories is a text-based public-art project funded by the City of Greater Geelong, which aims to unearth Geelong’s fascinating history in the rapidly modernising urban landscape. ADAM COURTENAY – THE GHOST AND THE BOUNTY HUNTER In 1803, a convict called William Buckley fled an embryonic settlement in the land of the Kulin nation, to take his chances in the wilderness. For 32 years Buckley lived as a Wadawurrung man, learning his adopted tribe's language, skills and methods of survival. The outside world finally caught up with Buckley in 1835, after John Batman, a bounty hunter from Van Diemen's land, arrived. The theft of Kulin country would end in the birth of a city. The frontier wars had begun. The son of one of Australia’s best known storytellers, Bryce Courtenay, Adam Courtenay is a writer, journalist and bestselling author of The Ship That Never Was. Adam consulted with the Wadawurrung Aboriginal Corporation in Geelong in the researching of this book. Wednesday 27 May Geelong Library & Heritage Centre 6:30-7:30pm
