nothing to hide

From the artistic Director A few months back I received an email from Neil Patrick Harris, a friend of the Geffen since he appeared here in All My Sons in 2006. Since then, we’ve been continually looking for projects on which we might collaborate, and when Neil approached us with this idea — a night of magic and perhaps a bit of mayhem — I was eager to know more. The next evening I found myself at the Magic Castle, captivated by Helder Guimarães and Derek DelGaudio. To see one great prestidigitator is dazzling; to see two in tandem is electrifying. Working seamlessly together, they create the illusion of working at odds — with jaw-dropping results. As I sat in wonder in the small packed space, knowing I was one of a select few to see the show, I could already imagine the pair in our own intimate Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater. So with Neil at the helm, we decided to create this special evening and offer you something completely unconventional for the holidays. After all, our dream has always been to make non-traditional theater our own tradition in the Audrey. From the Geffen family to you and yours, we wish you a magical holiday season. Enjoy,

Randall Arney Artistic Director

Helder has also worked as a magic consultant for several TV projects including The Tonight Show, as well as theatrical productions such as Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter, and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He is also the author of Reflections, a book for professional conjurers. THE GIFT

Written by Joanna Murray-Smith Directed by Maria Aitken american premiere from the playwright ofthe geffen hit, The female of the species

Acclaimed Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith brings this comedic American premiere to the Geffen Playhouse. When two couples meet while vacationing at a ritzy resort, they instantly transition from strangers to the best of friends. Despite their almost comical differences — Ed and Sadie are middle-aged, rich and traditional, while Martin and Chloe are young artists glowing with their potential to change the world — they find themselves spending the rest of their week together. When one seemingly inconsequential event throws both their lives into a tailspin, the couples find themselves wrestling with a moral dilemma: while it’s human nature to want what you don’t have, is it unnatural to abandon something that you do? This provocative new work draws audiences in with a beguiling hilarity that gives way to an unsettling twist, posing searing questions rather than providing comfortable answers.

Written by david mamet Directed by randall arney pulitzer prize winning playwright

August Strindberg’s classic play about sex, greed and manipulation is adapted by the modern master of such tantalizing topics: Neil LaBute. This scandalous work chronicles the flirtation and seduction between the wealthy lady of the house and one of her father’s footmen, capturing the timeless consequences of passion and power.

Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney takes a fresh look at Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s groundbreaking work about three misguided misfits plotting the theft of a rare coin collection. This defining work negotiates explosive humor, frenetic energy and surprising tenderness and has not seen a major Los Angeles production in over a decade.
