ARTISTIC

TARELL ALVIN MCCRANEY

One of the greatest responsibilities as Artistic Director is setting the artistic vision for Geffen Playhouse. That vision includes connection and healthy dialogue with our sibling organizations and institutions. Steppenwolf Theatre Company, now nearing 50 years as America’s ensemble theater in Chicago, has long been a cousin to the Geffen and my home ensemble theater. It was always a part of my vision to make sure these two related theaters re-established their connection. I never expected that it would be with Noises Off.

But when Anna D. Shapiro—a Tony Award–winning director, former Steppenwolf Artistic Director, and brilliant theatrical heavyweight—tells you it is a dream of hers to direct Michael Frayn’s spectacularly silly British farce, you get on board. My excitement

doubled when we found a way to cast both LA actors and Chicago ensemble members in the production. This hybridity adds to the hilarity and allows us to do the thing we desperately need to right now: come together and shake our heads at how overserious, unkind, and silly we can be to each other...in the theater.

Bringing this production to Westwood is akin to bringing my entire family home together just after the holidays. It will hold all the mayhem, shenanigans, and sardines of a family dinner. And throughout the evening you may wonder, how much wilder can it get? I invite you to lean in and watch.

BOARD CHAIR ADI GREENBERG

As this program goes to print, our community is grappling with profound loss and grief in the wake of the recent fires. While we cannot predict how things will unfold by the time you read these words, one thing is certain: our world has been irrevocably changed.

What remains unchanged, however, is the heart of Los Angeles. The unwavering support you show for this theater and your commitment to be present and engaged gives us all hope. It’s a testament to the power of our collective generosity and determination to help us heal, rebuild, and move forward together.

We are grateful that the Geffen Playhouse is here for you. As the lights dim, we hope you find a moment of respite and lightness amidst the weight of these times. The Geffen stands as a sanctuary, a gathering place, and a home for the stories that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be.

We are also thankful to our incredible partners at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, where this co-production first came to life.

Above all, we are most grateful that you are here with us tonight.

Enjoy the show.

Recent productions include: The Inheritance: Part 1 & Part 2 (Artios Award), Every Brilliant Thing, The Power of Sail, Witch, and Barbecue Before joining the Geffen, she cast for Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago where her favorites include Frank Galati’s adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath (also La Jolla Playhouse, National Theatre in London, and Broadway, where it received the Tony Award for Best Play) and the original production of Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Broadway transfers include One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Tony Award for Best Revival), The Song of Jacob Zulu, and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice

STEPPENWOLF THEATRE COMPANY

Steppenwolf Theatre is the nation’s premier ensemble theater with 49 members who are among the top actors, playwrights, and directors in the

field. Thrilling, powerful, groundbreaking productions—from Balm in Gilead and The Grapes of Wrath to August: Osage County, Downstate, and The Brother/ Sister Plays—have made this theatre legendary. Steppenwolf’s artistic force remains rooted in the original vision of its founders: an artist-driven theatre, whose vitality is defined by its sharp appetite for bold and innovative work. While grounded in the Chicago community, more than forty original Steppenwolf productions have enjoyed success nationally and internationally, including Broadway, off-Broadway, London, Sydney, Galway, and Dublin. Steppenwolf also holds accolades that include the National Medal of Arts, twelve Tony Awards, and more. Led by Artistic Directors Glenn Davis and Audrey Francis, Executive Director E. Brooke Flanagan, and Board of Trustees Chair Keating Crown—Steppenwolf has, and continues to redefine the landscape of acting and performance.

TARELL ALVIN M c CRANEY (he/him)

Artistic Director

Tarell Alvin McCraney is Artistic Director of Geffen Playhouse. In this role, he is responsible for identifying, developing, and programming new works and re-envisioned classics. He sets the strategic artistic course

for the Geffen’s Gil Cates and Audrey Skirball Kenis Theaters. McCraney is an award-winning writer, producer, and educator, best known for his acclaimed trilogy, The Brother/Sister Plays. His script In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue is the basis for the Oscar–winning film Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins, for which McCraney and Jenkins also won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. He is an ensemble member at Steppenwolf Theatre and a member of Teo Castellanos D-Projects in Miami, a graduate of New World School of the Arts, The Theatre School at DePaul University, and the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warwick. He was recently Co-Chair of Playwriting at the David Geffen School of Drama, where he remains on faculty. He is an associate at the Royal Shakespeare Company, London, and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Writers Branch).

Gil Cates, Jr. is Executive Director / CEO of Geffen Playhouse. In this role, he is responsible for managing the Geffen’s day-today operations; developing new, ongoing theater partnerships and leading its mission to inform,

entertain and inspire diverse audiences with live theater of the highest caliber. Prior to being named Executive Director in 2015, Cates served as Geffen Playhouse Board Vice Chairman since 2012 and served as a producer and director in theater, film and television. His theater credits include the award-winning Names (Matrix Theatre Company) and Three Sisters and David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre (both at Syracuse Stage). Cates’ film credits include The Surface (starring Sean Astin and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Chris Mulkey), Jobs (starring Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad, Dermot Mulroney, as well as Geffen Playhouse alumni Matthew Modine and Ron Eldard) and the 2011 feature film Lucky (starring Colin Hanks, Ari Graynor and Ann-Margret). In addition, Cates co-produced and co-directed the critically acclaimed Life After Tomorrow, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, which premiered on Showtime. His other films include Deal (starring Burt Reynolds, Bret Harrison and Charles Durning) and The Mesmerist (starring Jessica Capshaw and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Neil Patrick Harris). Cates’ television directorial debut was an episode of the NBC comedy Joey, starring Emmy winner Matt LeBlanc. He recently directed Displaced, a documentary short chronicling the journey of one of the first refugee families to flee Ukraine and arrive in the U.S. after escaping the Russian invasion. He studied at the National Theatre Institute in Waterford, Connecticut, and holds a B.F.A. in Drama from Syracuse University.
