THE NIGHT ALIVE

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

I AM A HUGE FAN OF CONOR MCPHERSON.

In my first season as Artistic Director at the Geffen, I helmed his hauntingly beautiful play, The Weir. A few years later came The Seafarer — depicting a Christmas Eve poker game with the devil and revealing the importance of hope and redemption. I am continually drawn to Conor’s depictions of characters who, in spite of their quiet desperation amid the monotony of everyday life, are surprisingly funny and sweet. His plays are populated by people rich with quirks and idiosyncrasies that make them wholly individual and yet totally relatable to us all. The intimacies of these stories are infused with huge heart, allowing the tales to transcend cultures. The Night Alive poses questions about our responsibility to one another and how someone like Tommy, the most reluctant of good Samaritans, cannot close the door on someone in need. These people, steeped deeply in their own flaws, find ways to rise above them, at least some of the time. Once again I am joined by an incredible team of designers, including Takeshi Kata (scenery), David Kay Mickelsen (costumes), Dan Ionazzi (lights), Richard Woodbury (music and sound) and Ned Mochel (violence). Together they have created a setting ripe for the disturbance of a newcomer — someone to shake the foundation of this home and change the lives of its inhabitants forever. I hope you enjoy our first play of 2015. If you are new to the theater, it’s a pleasure to welcome you. If you are a subscriber, it’s a pleasure to have you along for this ride that has thus far taken us into the locker room of a high school boys’ choir, the luxurious living room of Irving Berlin and now to a run-down Edwardian home in the heart of Phoenix Park, Dublin. Our hope is that these very different journeys leave you with something unexpected. Enjoy the show! Randall Arney Artistic Director

HAPPY NEW YEAR! WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME you back to the Geffen Playhouse for The Night Alive directed by our very own Randall Arney. We wanted to share a bit about two of our education and outreach programs — the High School Partnerships program and Lights Up. With our High School Partnerships program, we hope to educate and inspire hundreds of high school students from Jordan, Roosevelt, Santee and Westchester High Schools through this production of The Night Alive. Students will participate in a pre-show workshop, attend a student matinee of the show and engage in a post-show talkback with the cast. In addition to students, we are also proud to serve disadvantaged community members who will see this production as part of our Lights Up program. But this is only a small sampling of the education and outreach programs here at the Geffen Playhouse. Each season, we serve more than 15,000 community members. To learn more, please visit geffenplayhouse.com/impact. One way to support this incredible programming is by joining us for Backstage at the Geffen on Sunday, March 22, 2015. Our biggest fundraising event of the year is an evening of laughter, music and never-before-told stories from the other side of the curtain. This year we will present Mellody Hobson & George Lucas with the Distinction in Service Award, and Sir Elton John & David Furnish with the Distinction in Theater Award. To purchase tickets or learn more, please contact Chief Development Officer Regina Miller at 310.208.6500 ext. 112 or visit geffenplayhouse.com/backstage. Thank you for joining us tonight. We wish you and your families well in this new year and look forward to seeing you at the theater. Martha Henderson Co-Chair, Geffen Playhouse

THE BLOOD, THE SWEAT AND THE FLESH DIRECTOR RANDALL ARNEY ON FINDING AN IRISH CAST IN L.A., HOLDING HIS TONGUE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ABLE TO SAY “I DON’T KNOW” BY REBECCA HAITHCOAT Rebecca Haithcoat: The Night Alive really is one of those plays better seen than read. Randall Arney: Those words are meant to be spoken, not read. It’s dialogue. It’s to be heard. Reading a play is not like a novel. A novel is finished. All it takes is someone to pull it off the shelf and read it. The whole artistic process happens. But with a play, it’s really more like a blueprint than a finished product. You gotta fill in how it looks and how it lives later. It’s not done. It’s just a plan. You need the three dimensions. You need the blood and the sweat and the flesh. And the ghosts — In between people! I’ve always said the most exciting part of a play is what happens in the space between you and me. As much as anything you do or anything I do, what we can do together is so much stronger. This is the third Conor McPherson play you’ve directed at the Geffen Playhouse. What are the special challenges of directing his plays? The Geffen audiences have a real history with Conor. We produced The Weir in 2000, and in 2008, we produced P4  PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE

The Seafarer. He is, in my and many other people’s opinions, one of the finest writers of the English language working today. It’s such graceful writing. He weaves such warm, incredibly human stories, but it’s not easy material. The scripts are wonderfully rich, but they really separate those from who can do it, and those who can’t. Inevitably, that’s the great challenge — getting a great cast, finding the thoroughbreds to run the race. In many plays, an actor must juggle three or four balls. In Conor’s plays, it’s more like juggling six or eight balls. It takes a real pro. You’ve got the dialect, the milieu of Ireland, and then you’ve got these incredibly intense relationships. What is it about Ireland that produces these exceptional playwrights? The country creates wonderful storytellers. Conor has a real skill at capturing the loneliness of the Irish male. They’re stoic people, yet so human. In The Weir, when a woman comes into the room, things change. And in The Night Alive, Tommy, who’s been sidetracked and is living in a room in his uncle’s house, brings a bloodied girl into the room. He interrupted a fight where she was being beaten up. You could file this play under, “No good deed

THE NIGHT ALIVE

goes unpunished.” He doesn’t know what he’s unleashing on himself and his friends by bringing her in. The presence of her in the house changes everything forever. Both for the good, and in some ways, for the ill. But it releases things in this play that are incredibly exciting. One of the characters says, “You only get a few go’s in life.” And Tommy’s light is almost out — but he’s going to get another opportunity for a go at life. It’s a great carnival ride for the audience. How does this play fit in your career? I grew up at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, and I’m attracted to plays that are great actor material and great ensemble pieces. I came up with a group of actors who got to pick our own plays. Oftentimes, we followed our passions to the plays we wanted to be in. This fits in that mode because the actors in the piece are tantamount to the success of the play. Conor’s such a wonderful storyteller — and in the theater, we’re in the storytelling business. This is a really special one. Artists all over the place have their hands up for The Night Alive because it’s such fun material to play. Is it difficult to cast an Irish play in Los Angeles? There’s a great Irish acting community living in Los Angeles, and they turn out in force whenever an Irish play is being done in town. So there’s a real authenticity in this production. I’m most looking forward to the exploration and excavation of this amazing script in a room with a group of really talented actors. We have a good time finding it together, carving out the story in these plays, which are so rich.

Director Randall Arney (center) in rehearsal with the cast of The Night Alive.

What’s your directorial style? I really try to create an incredibly fun and safe room in which to play. It requires actors to be open to each other. If there’s tension at all in the room, the first thing that will happen is actors will close down. It’s really just setting the table. I always talk in the room of the importance of all of us living in the creative state of, “I don’t know,” for as long as we can. As long as you say, “I don’t know,” you’re still learning. It’s when you say you know something that you sort of stop. Keeping that open exploration of the script and characters and encouraging the give-and-take between the actors is what I love doing. In the beginning of the process, I feel very comfortable moving them around, but I try not to get into their space. That’s where they’re doing the creating. After a week or two, when they have a little more confidence with what they’re doing, they’ll want me in there with them, giving advice and help. A lot of it is knowing the process, and not doing step 10 on day one. I also find when you have really great actors, the challenge for a

director is knowing when to keep one’s mouth shut. You can always give a note tomorrow, but you can’t take back a note given too soon. You can’t get the toothpaste back in the tube. Why this play now? We’re thrilled to have this premiere on the West Coast. Because of our relationship with Conor, we were able to carve out the rights to the play before they really were available. I love being able to bring the play to our audience in such a timely way. It’s still a “new” Conor McPherson play. So the timing is right. I also think the play is very timely for the reason I think many plays are timely. In our day and age of social media and sitting alone in our rooms typing on computers, the ability to come and sit in the dark side-byside with a bunch of strangers while we turn the lights off and tell you a story — that communal experience is as important now as ever. I find that people are really hungry for that, for a good story. And no one tells a story like Conor McPherson. PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE P5

Acclaimed novelist Patricia Highsmith is racing to finish her latest thriller when an attractive young man interrupts her work. When might the publishers expect the next anticipated addition to her sinister “Mr. Ripley” series? The author’s real-life dry humor and macabre imagination meet with this mysterious character’s own darkly seductive agenda in this gripping new play — leaving you breathless through its very final chapter. In this original Geffen Playhouse commission, Joanna Murray-Smith (The Female of the Species), with her unique brand of humor and mystery, brings to life this literary giant best known for Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

OUTREACH

UCLA PARTNERSHIP THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE’S ONGOING PARTNERSHIP WITH UCLA was further strengthened this fall with a new professional theater practicum. The 10week course offered UCLA undergraduates a detailed understanding of what it takes to run a professional not-for-profit theater. UCLA students have also participated in master classes with Geffen Playhouse artists such as Annette Bening, gained real-world experience through employment at the theater and interned in directing, playwriting, acting, lights, sound and much more. Perhaps the greatest benefit of the partnership is also its simplest: UCLA students receive low or no-cost access to Geffen Playhouse season productions. Thanks to generous donor support, more than 1,000 UCLA students will attend a performance at the Geffen Playhouse this year. P16  PERFORMANCES  MAGAZINE

OUTREACH

UCLA undergraduates participating in the professional theater practicum with Annette Bening during the production of Ruth Draper’s Monologues.

“The Geffen allowed this class to be a gateway to exploring other careers that I would have otherwise never thought about.” “I greatly enjoyed getting insider perspectives on parts of the theater I do not normally consider or think about.” “This was the best class I have taken in a while!”

Photos by Jeff Lorch Photography

“I have taken away so much more from this class than I had expected, and I love the Geffen more so now than ever!” “I loved being able to hear directly from theater professionals and their journey to their position. I also like that we could better understand the workings of a theater from all perspectives.”

DONOR SPOTLIGHT AS ACTORS, THEATER ADMINISTRATORS and producers, Jason and Yvonne Lee have first-hand knowledge of the significant role good rehearsal space can play in a production’s development. The couple, who are generous Geffen Playhouse donors and founding company members of Lower Depth Theatre Ensemble (LDTE), will see their generous gift to the Geffen Playhouse be used precisely to aide that process: the Jason and Yvonne Lee Geffen Playhouse Annex will be the rehearsal home for future rehearsals as well as education and outreach events programmed by the Geffen Playhouse. “Jason and Yvonne Lee’s gift and our partnership with UCLA expand the Geffen Playhouse’s artistic and communityengagement mission,” says Artistic Director Randall Arney. “We are programming and producing more than ever before and, subsequently, have been squeezing every bit of use out of our current spaces.” Indeed, the last few years at the Geffen have seen an increase from five to eight season productions plus added special events and augmented education and community outreach programs. The result: a significant increase in demand for real-estate in one of the busiest commercial districts in Los Angeles. Enter longtime partner UCLA, which owns the space in which the Geffen Playhouse continues to operate and which recently agreed to a long-term lease for the Jason and Yvonne Lee Geffen Playhouse Annex. The newly named space, located in a previous retail location at 930 Westwood Boulevard, is a close neighbor to the primary Geffen Playhouse campus. Mr. Lee most recently played Lord Capulet in Classical Theatre of Harlem’s Romeo and Juliet. He also played Malcolm X in One Night in Miami by Kemp Powers at Rogue Machine Theatre. His other L.A. stage credits include work at the Geffen Playhouse, Evidence Room, Robey and Towne Street Theatres. His Chicago credits include work at the Goodman, Victory Gardens, Lookingglass, Northlight and Court Theatres.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee are Geffen Playhouse Advisory Board members, philanthropists, art lovers, backgammon and Parcheesi fanatics and the proud parents of Grace and Maya.

Other L.A. stage credits include LDTE’s Three Sisters After Chekhov, Stop Kiss with Theatre 150 and Private Battle with Watts Village Theatre.
