IN & OF ITSELF

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR WELCOME TO DEREK DelGAUDIO’S WORLD PREMIERE show In & Of Itself. Normally, we create theater that inevitably has a sense of illusion to it, but every so often, we like to shake things up and program illusion infused with theater. Derek, whom we welcome back after his stunning debut in Nothing to Hide in 2012 at the Geffen, has helped us broaden the very nature of theater we program in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater. Quite apart from the astonishing illusion he creates for an audience, Derek maintains a rapport and a narrative that incorporates not only magic but theater in the truest sense of the word. Derek has taken this art form and crafted a new type of multi-faceted performance art with illusion as the nexus around which the show revolves. To help mold Derek’s story is none other than Frank Oz. A masterful director, storyteller and puppeteer, Frank is responsible for creating many of the most beloved characters of our time, including Miss Piggy, Cookie Monster and Yoda. His work in bringing the inanimate to roaring life remains a glittering example of the marriage he creates between magic and storytelling. Frank has shaped In & Of Itself with his signature sense of wonder and, along with Derek, has guided an incredible team of artists through a design process that not only serves the complicated needs of an illusionist but also helps bring the story to life. Their collaboration has led them to create an evening sure to blow your mind. We are pleased once again to have the opportunity to share a brand new show with you in our ongoing commitment to building a home for artists to experiment and push boundaries. We believe that this artistic freedom allows for the best of what is possible to emerge in the process. Enjoy the show! Randall Arney ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

GIL CATES, JR. WELCOME TO IN & OF ITSELF IN THE AUDREY SKIRBALL Kenis Theater! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for being a part of the Geffen Playhouse family this year — our 20th anniversary season — whether you’re a long-time subscriber, donor or new to the theater. As we reflect on the past 20 years and look toward a bright and expanding future, it is with much enthusiasm and pride that I share with you an important update on the future of the organization. This year, we are launching the public phase of our Legacy Fund campaign, which will ensure the stability and longevity of this theater. The Legacy Fund has been made possible by extraordinary leadership gifts pledged during the initial phase of the campaign this past year, along with a significant challenge grant generously provided by David Geffen. Still, this is just the beginning. To learn more about the Legacy Fund, please contact Regina Miller, our Chief Development Officer, at 310.208.6500 ext. 112 or reginam@geffenplayhouse.org. Our dreams for the theater continue to grow, as does the critical need in our community for the type of bold artistic work, innovative education programming and long-term cultural impact we are committed to providing. We look forward to expanding our artistic initiatives, building new partnerships, deepening our community engagement and continuing to develop new audiences for generations to come. With sincere gratitude to all of you who have been, and continue to be, an integral part of the Geffen Playhouse.

THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA McBRIDE Written by MATTHEW LOPEZ Directed by MIKE DONAHUE WEST COAST PREMIERE

CONSTELLATIONS Written by NICK PAYNE LOS ANGELES PREMIERE

Matthew Lopez’s (writer of Obie Award-winning play, The Whipping Man) heartwarming tale of an Elvis impersonator who finds that life as a performer can be quite a drag is, indeed, legendary. At this small-time club in the Florida Panhandle, the King may be leaving the building, but the queens have just arrived.

Nick Payne’s Olivier and Drama League nominated play Constellations comes to Los Angeles following a hit Broadway run. Ben Brantley of The New York Times asks, “Who knew that higher physics could be so sexy, so accessible — and so emotionally devastating?” A play that balances on the question of “what if” is, at its core, a profound picture of “what is.”

We invite you to help give youth from Los Angeles’s most underserved communities the opportunity to experience live theater and to work with world-class artists who inspire and educate them like nothing else can. Together with the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, we engage more than 500 underserved high school students from the lowest performing high schools in Los Angeles in a season-long program. Profoundly disadvantaged youth gain access to year-round opportunities to experience world-class live theater. This is not just one-time access, but a deeply impactful program.

1 MONTH PRIOR TO EACH MATINEE Our Director of Education and Community Engagement creates a detailed study guide to help students more fully understand the themes of the play.

1 WEEK PRIOR TO EACH MATINEE Geffen Playhouse teaching artists go into classrooms to explore the play with students and prepare them for the matinee, using theater activities and the study guides as tools.

DAY OF EACH MATINEE
