WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE Photo by Jeff Lorch

BLACK SUPER HERO MAGIC MAMA IS A WONDER—A BREATHTAKING DRAMA that unfolds on a brilliantly original canvas. It is the brainchild of the hugely talented Los Angeles-based playwright Inda Craig-Galván, who synthesizes a parent’s devastating loss with a quest through a fantastical world, all the while telling a story with ripped-from-the-headlines resonance. To celebrate this world premiere by one of America’s most exciting new playwrights—especially one based in our fair city—is an honor. Inda’s piece is among the most ambitious plays we’ve produced in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater. Before the Geffen, I ran the tiny, 30-seat Black Dahlia Theatre here in L.A. I have long been a firm believer that big things can happen in little spaces. And that sometimes there is even greater magic possible in an intimate venue. There was never any doubt that this play—though large in vision—needed a space that would immerse its audience, bringing us a hair’s breadth from the powerful, poignant drama at the core. It’s been a joy to watch the visionary director Robert O’Hara and his incredible cast and designers bring Inda’s script to life. They have matched her inventiveness every step of the way and blown the doors off of this 120-seat theater. Black Super Hero Magic Mama is a journey that will open your heart and show you what a truly original voice in the theatre can do. Enjoy the show! Matt Shakman Artistic Director

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT By Inda Craig-Galván

I KEEP A PHOTO ON MY DESK OF A PLAYGROUND IN CLEVELAND, OHIO. There’s snow on the ground. Footprints in the snow where a boy had been playing all by himself, alone with his imagination. As a mother, I find the image of a Black boy playing pretend—without any friends—to be simultaneously wondrous and a little sad. I imagine the game he might have been imagining: a Wild West shootout, a standoff between the Rebel Alliance and Darth Vader’s droids, cops & robbers. I’ll never know. The before isn’t seen in this particular photo that I keep on my desk. This image was captured later. It’s the after. After police officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback responded to a call—a suspect brandishing a gun at the playground. Seconds after they arrived on scene, Loehmann fired twice, shooting the suspect. The “gun” was a toy. The “suspect” was 12-year-old Tamir Rice. Loehmann, by the way, had already been deemed unfit and emotionally unstable at his previous police station, but nobody at the Cleveland PD reviewed the officer’s personnel file before hiring him and setting him off in a patrol car. Tamir Rice died the next day. It was his last day. Tamir Rice would have no more after, happily ever or otherwise. No more playgrounds. No more games. No more. As is always the case, reporters went to the police chief for statements...and then to the mother. In any other instance, with any other mother and any other child, there is a respect for privacy. There exists an understanding that a mother who’s lost her child should—must—be allowed to grieve. But somewhere within our collective conscious’

numbness to “another one” of these shooting deaths, we—the media and society at large— have come to expect something else. The Black Mother must attend the rallies, lead the prayers and keep on going. She must show up. We bandy words like strong and brave. We solder our learned expectations to these newly-initiated members of this messed-upmothers-club. These women have shown up and played their part in this cyclical nightmare, because it is what is expected. That’s their burden, on top of their tragedy, that we’ve all come to accept. I wrote this play as a defiant response to that expectation of the Black Mother to show up and be brave and strong. What happens if a mother doesn’t? What if she can’t. What if she won’t. Is she then deemed unfit? Do we label her emotionally unstable? Or do we give her the care and consideration that we would give any other mother who has lost a child? In this mother’s time of grief, can we honor her by allowing her to just grieve? To just...be. I also wrote this play as an homage to the fantastical adventure stories my own children grew up with. Stories about the boy who lived, the girl who went to Oz, the children who went through the wardrobe. Their passages into wondrous worlds all begin with a tragedy: Harry Potter is unloved, living under the Dursleys’ stairs after his parents’ death; Dorothy gets conked on the head during a tornado; the Pevensie siblings are sent away for their own safety during World War II. For the mother in Black Super Hero Magic Mama, a tragic event propels her into a world where she gets to be the hero. Whether this means seeking vengeance, forgiveness or both, we get to see a Black woman on stage at the center of a fantasy in a way that we don’t often get to see ourselves portrayed. She is brave and strong; and she is also at times sad, angry, confused and even funny. She is human. GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE 7

GIL CATES, JR. (Executive Director) As Executive Director, Gil Cates, Jr. leads the Geffen Playhouse in its mission to inform, entertain and inspire diverse audiences with live theater of the highest caliber—both within and beyond the non-profit theater’s walls. He has proudly served on the Geffen Playhouse Board since 2012. Gil’s theater credits include the award-winning Names (Matrix Theatre Company) starring Dixie Carter and Greg Mullavey, Three Sisters and David

Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre (both at Syracuse Stage). Gil’s film credits include The Surface (starring Sean Astin and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Chris Mulkey), Jobs (starring Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad, Dermot Mulroney, as well as Geffen Playhouse alumni Matthew Modine and Ron Eldard) and the 2011 feature film Lucky (starring Colin Hanks, Ari Graynor, Ann-Margret and Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Tambor). In addition, Gil produced and directed the critically acclaimed Life After Tomorrow, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, which premiered on Showtime. His other films include Deal (starring Burt Reynolds, Bret Harrison and Charles Durning) and The Mesmerist (starring Geffen Playhouse alumnus Neil Patrick Harris). Gil’s television directorial debut was an episode of the NBC comedy Joey, starring Emmy winner Matt LeBlanc. He studied at the National Theatre Institute in Waterford, Connecticut, and holds a B.F.A. in Drama from Syracuse University.

REGINA MILLER (Chief Development Officer) Regina Miller has advised non-profit institutions, foundations and corporations on strategy, analysis and fundraising. She GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE 15

PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES has consulted for Array Alliance, The Entertainment Industry Foundation, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project and Kershaw’s Challenge, among others. Prior to the Geffen, Regina worked for the Simon Wiesenthal Center/Museum of Tolerance, where she produced an innovative human rights exhibition that traveled to 14 international destinations around Europe, Asia and the U.S. She also served as the Director of

Partnerships for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, where she led strategic planning and development while executing policies that advanced the organization’s visibility and growth. Additionally, Regina has a strong passion for teaching. After graduating from University of North Carolina School of the Arts, she taught in preschools and kindergartens in New York. From the age of 13, Regina worked as a professional dancer on Broadway as

well as with a number of prominent modern dance ensembles. Fusing two of her interests, she created a highly successful program that incorporated dance therapy and creative movement into an early childhood curriculum as well as writing and producing a television show based on this concept. In addition to being a published author and photographer with Tallfellow Press and Prometheus Books, Regina has taught and lectured at numerous schools in New York, Los Angeles and abroad.

THE NEW PLAY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Supporting artists is central to the mission of the Geffen Playhouse, and play commissions are a cornerstone of that support. To commission a playwright to write a play means making a commitment to their voice, craft and vision, with the hope of sharing the fruits of their work on our stage. The Geffen Playhouse’s New Play Development Program is made possible, in large part, through the leadership and generosity of donations from: The Edgerton Foundation, The Harold & Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, Fay & Frank Mancuso, Sandra Krause & William Fitzgerald, Hilary & Jack Angelo and Mary Bianco, The MOCA Foundation. We are proud to have the following artists under commission: Rachel Bonds Colman Domingo Michael Golamco Meghan Kennedy Matthew Lopez Martyna Majok

Michael Mitnick Jiehae Park John Pollono Zoe Sarnak Robert Schenkkan Erika Sheffer

Jen Silverman Qui Nguyen & Vampire Cowboys David Wiener Lauren Yee Anna Ziegler

For more information on this program, please visit geffenplayhouse.org/newplays.

THE WRITERS’ ROOM A group for Los Angeles-based playwrights, The Writers’ Room is a product of the Geffen’s deep commitment to supporting new plays and specifically to fostering bold, relevant work by the vibrant artistic community of Los Angeles. During this one-year residency, playwright members gather monthly at the Geffen to share their work and receive feedback from their peers and the Geffen’s artistic staff, culminating in a play reading series.
