BROADWAY HOLIDAY
FROM THE PRODUCING DIRECTOR
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ALL OF US HERE AT THE GEFFEN
Playhouse. This year we bring you and your family something special – a way to draw you out of the shopping psychosis, the traumatic traffic and the maniacal merriment and give you an enchanting evening in the theater that in some way captures the true spirit of the holiday season. With this desire to delight in mind, we are currently commissioning a new play that we hope will become a perennial favorite — more details on that are to follow — stay tuned. But in the interim, we are thrilled to be collaborating on a piece that combines the best of the holidays and the best of Broadway with Neil Berg’s Broadway Holiday. This splendid evening includes some of Broadways brightest stars singing an array of holiday favorites and Broadway’s best. We could think of no better way to ring in the new year than with music we all know and love. As we enter 2011 we have a line-up of new and exciting work that is sure to provoke and provide much food for thought. We lead off with Neil LaBute’s The Break of Noon which will bring into question the very nature of the faith that is celebrated this holiday season. Following The Break of Noon is Jane Anderson’s The Escort, a Geffen commissioned world premiere revolving around the sex industry and finally we round out the season with Tracy Lett’s, Superior Donuts directed by Geffen Artistic Director, Randall Arney. This is in just one of our theaters. The Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater hosts two new shows in 2011. In Mother Words gathers some of contemporary theater’s most talented voices for a funny, touching and sometimes unorthodox look at motherhood. David Wiener’s Extraordinary Chambers exposes the ethics of survival through one American couple’s experience in present-day Cambodia. Flexible subscription packages to these shows are available on our website. But one step at a time. Now it’s time to dim the lights, turn off the phones and escape from holiday madness, if only for an hour or two. As always, we here at the Geffen wish you and yours a safe, merry, happy holiday season and we look forward to ringing in the New Year with a raucous celebration of new plays. See you at the theater,
Gilbert Cates Producing Director

FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRANK G. MANCUSO
IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO BROADWAY HOLIDAY, our seasonal offering with show-stopping tunes sung by Broadway’s best. The holidays have always been my favorite time of the year. It is a reflective time for me. A time to remember what really is important in life and to give thanks for those things and individuals that make it all worthwhile. So it is with deep gratitude that I thank each of you for coming out today to support the work we do here at the Geffen Playhouse. As we continue to expand the work on our stages, and as our programs continue to grow in our community outreach activity for students, seniors and veterans, you play an incredibly important role in our theater’s achievements. We are extremely proud of the body of work that is done at the Geffen both on our stages and for our community, but none of it would be possible without your continued support. In addition, I am thrilled to remind you about our annual Backstage at the Geffen gala. Please save the date — April 11, 2011 for this wonderful evening celebrating our art and supporting our education and outreach programs. It’s truly my favorite event of the year and I will look forward to seeing you there.
