THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES

FROM THE PRODUCING DIRECTOR

WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE IT IS MY GREAT PLEASURE TO BEGIN 2010 BY WELCOMING Annette Bening back to the Geffen Playhouse. Fresh from her courageous and extraordinary performance in Medea, she is now ready to take on something completely different. It’s been more than ten years since she performed here in Hedda Gabler, and with the discovery of Joanna Murray-Smith’s wild new comedy Annette is happily with us again playing the role of Margot Mason, a formidable feminist author with a flare for the dramatic. Annette is joined by an exciting cast — actresses Mireille Enos and Merritt Wever are joined by actors David Arquette, Julian Sands and Josh Stamberg, all making their Geffen debut. At the helm, our own Artistic Director, Randall Arney has also assembled an extraordinary creative team of long time Geffen veterans to help bring The Female of the Species to fruition. Dan Ionazzi (lighting designer), Takeshi Kata (set designer), Richard Woodbury (composer and sound designer), and David Kay Michelson (costume designer) have worked closely with playwright Joanna Murray-Smith to carefully craft an impeccable world in which to bring this lovely comedy to life. As we move into this decade, we will continue to present work with exciting, trailblazing artists. Joanna is just one example of the fresh new voices we hope to welcome back to our theater again and again. We are consistently inspired by the people with whom we share our Geffen stage and it is all the sweeter when so many of them are members of our artistic family. See you at the theater,

THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES

INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR RANDALL ARNEY

AS THE GEFFEN’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND THE DIRECTOR OF THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES, RANDALL ARNEY HOLDS TO THE BELIEF THAT WITH THE RIGHT TEAM OF ARTISTS IN YOUR CORNER AND A HEALTHY SENSE OF HUMOR, ALL THAT REMAINS IS TELLING THE TRUTH… Interview by Dramaturge Amy Levinson AMY: It’s always fascinating to hear why a director chooses a particular work. How did The Female of the Species first cross your desk and what drew you to directing the play? RANDALL: It’s been so long, I can hardly remember how it came to us. I believe you and I took it home the day it arrived to give it a read. I remember running into you in the street the following morning and sharing our excitement about the material. I was really attracted to it; I thought it was such a fresh and unique comedy. Revolving around the themes of feminism, it continually surprised me, especially with a completely inspired ending. It is wildly funny and yet because it is dealing with major social themes, it reminded me of the best of Shaw an idea play where you get to chew on relevant, current things but the ride to arrive at these large ideas is such a fun one. Following that initial read, we had the opportunity to hear the play aloud as it was being slated to open here. When we had to postpone the show, we got the opportunity to track its progress elsewhere which included a terrific London run where Joanna [Murray-Smith] continued to hone and develop the script. I stayed in touch with Joanna and happily,

the play came back around after the London production. Joanna is actually in house with us for the rehearsal process and she continues to work on the play. The ending has also been in play - there were significantly different endings from Australia to London and I don’t want to give away our choice, but I think Joanna feels as though she’s taken the best of both versions for this production. AMY: In terms of the changes that Joanna has made for this production, can you talk a bit about what types of changes were made for an American audience and why? RANDALL: When Joanna first wrote the play it was written for her theater, The Melbourne Theatre Company, in Australia. She always felt that this play would be best served being set in the time and place of its audience. So for instance, in Melbourne, they are all Australian and speak as such. For an American audience, the setting of the play has been moved to upstate New York and the characters are all American. The idea is to create a connection with the play and the audience immediately. An American audience recognizes the east coast intellectual in her country home, etc.

The play is universal enough that these shifts from Australia to London to America are not that difficult to make. Clearly, Euros become U.S. Dollars and there are other things of that sort. In addition, there are less obvious ones like syntax and phrasing. What we have found so interesting on this pass at the play is that there are two levels that Joanna must contend with in adapting for an American audience. The first are the Australian colloquialisms that she, as an Australian, automatically uses when writing. Then there is the added layer of the British-isms that were incorporated for the London production. In each case, we have had to flag all of these differences and make adjustments when necessary. Joanna has taught us all numerous Australian sayings that we had never heard. Continued on next page >> 3

INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR RANDALL ARNEY

In terms of more sweeping rewrites, Joanna has discovered that there were sections where she had initially depended on monologues and she found that the rhythm of the play, particularly for the American incarnation, is better served by breaking those monologues up and allowing for more interplay among the actors. What she landed on is a more dramatic and dynamic solution as the characters can now volley the ideas back and forth and create momentum that perhaps she didn’t have when the information was relayed in a monologue. AMY: It’s interesting, you talked about the theme of feminism, and how the play both highlights and pokes fun at it. If you were to categorize the play, would you say that the play has a feminist perspective? RANDALL: Yes, it definitely does. Joanna has said that because our central character is an iconic feminist author who broke onto the mainstream in the 1970s, we have an ideal set up for the characters in the play to discuss the evolution of feminism. Margot Mason, our protagonist, is of the first generation of feminists while her daughter is of a completely different generation of feminists with a new agenda. We can go from second wave feminism to third wave feminism - and point at the ideas and demands that feminists in the seventies insisted upon that are now taken for granted. All of these tensions are in 4

the play and three different women talk about the effects of feminism on women. Then, halfway through the play, men begin to enter the scene and we get to experience the often confusing effects of the last 30 years of feminism on the male of the species. I think it truly is a feminist play in that it studies the idea from so many angles. I also know that Joanna, as an accomplished feminist thinker and writer, also identifies deeply with the character in the play who is a mother of three, sleeping very little and devoting her life to the family. This timeless struggle in the feminist ideal is very present in the play. But in terms of larger ideas, the play is also taking on the publishing industry and self-help culture and calling them to the floor in regards to diminishing grand intellectualism. The publishers are guilty of catering to the self-help authors to cover the bottom line and in doing so the canon of great novels and exploration of larger ideas seem to go by the wayside. In addition, the play also examines the damage caused by stagnating within your own ideals. There seems to be a warning in this story about believing one’s own propaganda to the point of defending a belief simply because you’ve held it for so long. In the play, and I agree with this assertion, that type of dogmatic perseverance on a single idea is the death of creative inspiration. Margot

seems to have hit that point when the play begins. Although Joanna is specifically looking at the dogma within the feminist movement and how it affects the characters in the play, it is certainly a universal idea that applies in one way or another to all of us. AMY: As the Artistic Director of the Geffen Playhouse, how do you balance your two work lives when you are directing a play? RANDALL: When I choose a play I know I want to direct, we select them far enough in advance that we are able to plan for my temporary absences. Now, when I say absences, I am still in the building, and I check in before and after rehearsal with the staff, but the bulk of my time is spent in the rehearsal room and then the theater getting the show up and running. The way we have set up our staff, in my capacity as artistic director, I work with a great team of people who include Gil Cates, Phyllis Schuringa, Mary Garrett, you [meaning me, the interviewer]… all of whom help to pick up the slack during the intensive three to five weeks that it takes to rehearse and open a show. But it requires that long term planning really take place. It’s a great exercise in multitasking which is a skill that all artistic directors need. We are at any time planning seasons, casting plays, searching for directors, designers and collaborators, reading plays for future seasons and shepherding

THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES

INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR RANDALL ARNEY

the creation of new work through commissions and workshops. It is virtually impossible to only focus on one project at a time when you are helping to run a theater and you are a participating artist in the work you oversee. It’s such a luxury for me to go into the rehearsal room and to know that this artistic staff will close ranks around me so that I can concentrate for that small period of time on the play I’m directing. AMY: You mentioned Phyllis Schuringa, the Geffen’s casting director, and that brings me to a question about your casting process. I have noticed that you are always drawn to ensemble plays - plays that really require that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Can you talk a bit about how you and Phyllis cast these beautifully balanced ensembles - where do you begin? RANDALL: It seems no two plays ever fall together in the same way. Any director can tell you, the role that you thought would be easiest to cast is inevitably the last one to fall into place. But I think you are onto something about my draw to the ensemble. I grew up and trained as an actor. I was an actor before I became a director and I tend to enter a play from an ensemble point of view. When I choose a play, I am looking, first and foremost, for a really good story, but once that is found, there are many different ways to convey it. There are directors

who will focus on visual images, emphasize certain aspects of the text, I prefer to tell the story with really good acting. I am fortunate in that Phyllis and I have worked together for over 25 years. She worked with me in Chicago prior to my coming to the Geffen and when I began here, I invited her to join me here. And this role, the role of the casting director is crucial to me not only as a director but as an artistic director. She is the gatekeeper of this incredible talent pool that is constantly growing and evolving. For me, as a director, having a colleague with whom I share a short hand really streamlines the process. Also, we have a process here that really begins with our desire to hire local actors. We are a theater for the Los Angeles community and there are many exciting possibilities here in terms of talent. Phyllis is constantly seeking out actors we don’t know and haven’t had the opportunity to work with, as well as cultivating our relationships with actors who return to the Geffen time and again. I think of putting casts together like doing chemistry. You bring together this group of actors and if at any point one of those actors changes, it alters the entire experiment. This process was unique in that Annette was already cast when the play came to us. I was thrilled to have her playing Margot Mason, the

woman at the center of the play. To have solved the central piece was a blessing because we could picture each actor in relation to Annette. AMY: Although I’ve noticed the trend in choosing ensemble plays, I have also noticed that you never choose the same type of material twice. Using The Seafarer and The Female of the Species as examples, do you approach these two very different plays the same way or does your directorial process vary from project to project? RANDALL: It’s funny, I don’t know what attracts me to any one play and I find that a steady diet of anything makes me want something else. But generally, a director’s job is to create a comfortable playground and working environment for the actors. This is true if you are working on the darkest of tragedies or the lightest of farces, the room needs to be a safe place to explore a play. And it needs to be fun, if not, then what are we doing? They are called ‘plays.’ I find that the playwright’s point of view helps to set the tone as well. Joanna’s wacky comedy is infectious, just as Conor McPherson’s balance between lightness and dark is infectious. But once we start to work, we all work very hard to find the truth in the scenes. Whether that’s midnight in a house in Dublin or on the country estate of a feminist icon, we are always looking for the truth. 5

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST ABOUT THE PLAYERS

DAVID ARQUETTE (Bryan) David Arquette is an actor, writer, director, and producer with a wonderfully unique, off-beat sensibility. He is one of the most versatile talents working in the entertainment industry today. Proof of his versatility is that he even wrote this bio of himself. It is difficult, and uncomfortable, for a man with his gifts to write about himself in the third person without sounding too arrogant or boastful. Suffice to say that Arquette is able to seamlessly segue from comedy to drama with extraordinary ease. In 1997, he (I) was discovered at Sundance for his (my) role in Johns. Since that time, he has acted in dozens of feature films, including the Scream trilogy, Hamlet 2, The Grey Zone, Stealing Sinatra, Never Been Kissed, Dream With the Fishes, Never Die Alone, and The Darwin Awards. Next year, Arquette will reprise his role as Deputy “Dewey” Riley in the much anticipated (by his business manager) fourth installment of the Scream films. The film, directed by Wes Craven is set for release in October 2010. In January 2003, Arquette formed a production company, Coquette Productions, with his talented, sexy, hilarious, smarter-than-him, loving wife, Courteney Cox. Through their company, David wrote and produced his directorial debut, The Tripper (which was a big hit in certain sections of Amsterdam) and The Butlers in Love, which he also served as executive producer and director. Also under the Coquette banner, Arquette produced the FX drama, Dirt and ABC’s Cougar Town, with Bill Lawrence, which stars his beautiful, talented, much-smarterthan-him, loving wife, Courteney Cox. Mr. Arquette’s last appearance on stage was his portrayal of Dr. Frank N. Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Tiffany Theater where his large calves were clad in fishnets, for all the world to see. This is his first time on-stage at the Geffen.
