TED L. NANCY (Writer & Performer) Ted L. Nancy is a pseudonym used by Barry Marder, a comedian, former writer for Seinfeld and the co-writer of DreamWorks’ animated hit Bee Movie. He has written for Bill Maher, Jay Leno and David Letterman. He also wrote with George Carlin. Currently, he is involved with Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

BETH KENNEDY (Service Representative) Beth Kennedy most recently appeared in the film Kong: Skull Island. She can also be seen in Mother’s Day, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day and Georgia Rule, all directed by the legendary Garry Marshall. Additionally, she performed in Marshall’s opera directing debut, The Grand Duchess, at the Los Angeles Opera. Kennedy is a long-standing member of the Troubadour Theater Company, producing and performing in more than 30 original productions throughout Southern California and beyond, most recently Little Drummer Bowie (Ovation Recommended) at the Garry Marshall Theatre (formerly Falcon Theatre) in Burbank. Previously, she produced and performed in Haunted House Party, a Roman Comedy (Ovation Recommended) at the Getty Villa. She is the recipient of multiple Ovation, Backstage and LA Drama Critics Circle Awards,

SAM KWASMAN (Pagliacci) Sam Kwasman is a veteran actor and comedian. He has appeared on such television shows as The Bob Newhart Show, Family Ties, Lou Grant, MADtv, Evening at the Improv and The Jerry Lewis Telethon, in addition to lending his voice to such cartoons as Robot Chicken with Seth Green and currently as Little Quacker on The Tom and Jerry Show. As a stand-up comic, he has appeared at The Comedy Store, the Improv, The Ice House and comedy clubs around the country. Over a 17 year period, Kwasman worked as the voice of Donald Duck at Walt Disney Studios and is featured in the book Mouse Tracks: The Story of Walt Disney Records. Currently on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee as the “Product Placement Guy.” www.samkay3000.com PIERRE BALLOÓN (Director) Pierre Balloón is an innovative, progressive French director. He specializes in abstract films using stark images and vivid colors. His movie Le Petit (The Small) is a good example. He has directed theater, most recently in the West Indies, garnering numerous awards and much acclaim for his production of The Odd Couple, starring Champak Daya (Oscar) and Gunjan Harjeet (Felix). Monsieur Balloón lives with his wife, Paithooon, their two children, Meryle and Roy, and their dog Mushroom. He is the son of Marcel Balloón, a former lighting

director, and Babette Peep of the Peep Sisters. His current project is Letters from a Nut by Ted L. Nancy. JERRY SEINFELD (Producer) Jerry Seinfeld is an American comedian, actor, writer, producer and director. He is known for playing a semi-fictional version of himself in the sitcom Seinfeld, which he created and wrote with Larry David. Seinfeld was a writer and producer on DreamWorks’ Bee Movie, for which he also voiced the lead role. He is the creator and host of the web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. DANIEL IONAZZI (Scenic & Lighting Designer) Recent designs for the Geffen Playhouse include Icebergs, Thom Pain (based on nothing); Outside Mullingar; The Night Alive; Reasons to Be Pretty; Ruth Draper’s Monologues; Slowgirl; Build; Yes, Prime Minister; American Buffalo; The Jacksonian; Radiance; Red Hot Patriot and Superior Donuts. His work has also been seen at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Berkeley Rep, Arena Stage, South Coast Repertory and Denver Center Theatre Company. His design for the New York production of The Jacksonian garnered a Lucille Lortel nomination. He designed the lighting installation for Teatro alla Moda for the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts and Trajectoire and Catapult for the dance company Diavolo. His design work can also be seen in the 4-D cinematic experience, Beyond all Boundaries, at the National World War II Museum. Daniel is Production Manager for the Geffen Playhouse, a member of the faculty of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and Director of Production for the Department of Theater. He is the author of The Stage Management Handbook and The Stagecraft Handbook. PHYLLIS MURPHY (Dramaturg) Phyllis Murphy was born in Georgia and raised in Tennessee. She studied Speech and

Theater at Middle Tennessee State University and Acting at Illinois State University. She has performed as an actor Off Broadway and has written two plays with Jeanne Michels (Letters from Bernice and The Queen of Bingo). Her television writing credits with Jean Gennis include Profiler, The Journey of Allen Strange and L.A. Law. She has also performed as a band singer and puppeteer. Her favorite things are cats and laughing. JULIE ANN RENFRO (Production Stage Manager) Julie Ann Renfro is from Orange County, CA, where she received her B.A. in Theatre Arts from Vanguard University. She is thrilled to be a part of the Letters from a Nut team! Other theater credits include: Pasadena Playhouse, South Coast Repertory, Shakespeare Orange County, Laguna Playhouse, Sydney Independent Theatre Company, Long Beach Shakespeare Company, American Rose Theatre and American Coast Theatre Company. Julie is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association. PHYLLIS SCHURINGA, CSA (Casting Director) Phyllis is an Artistic Associate and the Casting Director for the Geffen Playhouse. Recent casting includes Constellations, The Legend of Georgia McBride, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Icebergs, Barbecue, Big Sky, Guards at the Taj, Barcelona (Artios nominated), Outside Mullingar, Bad Jews, The Night Alive, Switzerland, The Country House (Artios nominated) and American Buffalo at the Geffen, and Shiv at The Theatre @ Boston Court. Before joining the Geffen she was the Casting Director for Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago where her favorites include Frank Galati’s adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath (also La Jolla Playhouse, National Theater in London and Broadway, where it received the Tony Award for Best Play), the original production of Steve Martin’s Picasso at the

most notably the LADCC Natalie Schafer Award for Emerging Comic Actress. Television credits include Speechless, Agents of Shield, The Bridge, Gilmore Girls and CSI. She is a graduate of CalArts and Loyola Marymount University.


PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES Lapin Agile (and subsequent productions including Westwood Playhouse and Briar Street Theater in Chicago), Austin Pendleton’s Orson’s Shadow and Charles L. Mee’s Time to Burn. Broadway transfers include One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Tony Award for Best Revival) and The Song of Jacob Zulu. She teaches auditioning at Steppenwolf West and is a member of the Casting Society of America and the Ovation Rules Committee. ALAN MARDER (Illustrator) Alan Marder is an accomplished cartoonist. He has illustrated all of the Letters from a Nut books by Ted L. Nancy as well as all of the Ed Broth books – Stories from a Moron and The Oddvious. His work can also be seen in Scammers, a show by Ted L. Nancy, produced by Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn’s Sundance Productions, appearing on Hulu. CAROLLA DIGITAL (Video) Carolla Digital is a full-service production and distribution company that specializes in creating engaging, cutting-edge content. Since 2013, partners Adam Carolla and Nate Adams, along with CFO Mike August, have spearheaded innovative and entertaining projects such as the narrative feature film Road Hard, as well as the awardwinning documentaries Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman and The 24 Hour War. Current documentaries in production are the story of Willy T. Ribbs, the first African-American driver to race in the Indy-500, and The World Famous KROQ, a co-production with Jimmy Kimmel, about a small, renegade radio station that went on to influence music, fashion and the entertainment industry on a global level. RANDALL ARNEY (Artistic Director) Randall Arney has been a theater professional for over 30 years and has served as Artistic Director of the Geffen Playhouse since 1999. In addition to his artistic programming and oversight at the Geffen, Arney has helmed many productions for the theater, most recently Icebergs, Outside Mullingar, The Night Alive, Reasons to Be Pretty, Slowgirl, American Buffalo, Superior Donuts, The Female of the Species, The Seafarer, Speed-the-Plow and All My Sons. Arney is an ensemble member and former Artistic Director of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre where his directing credits include: Slowgirl, The Seafarer, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Death and the Maiden, Curse of the Starving Class, Killers and The Geography of Luck, among others. Arney also directed Steppenwolf’s world premiere of Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile, as well as the subsequent national and international acclaimed productions. Mr. Arney’s acting credits with Steppenwolf include Born Yesterday, Ghost in the Machine, The Homecoming, Frank’s Wild Years, You Can’t Take it with You, Fool for Love, True West, Balm in Gilead and Coyote Ugly. As the Artistic Director for Steppenwolf from 1987 to 1995, he oversaw the creation of a new state-of-the-art theater which is Steppenwolf’s current home. Broadway transfers under his leadership include The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, The Song of Jacob Zulu (six Tony Award nominations) and The Grapes of Wrath (1990 Tony Award, Best Play). Mr. Arney has an M.F.A. degree in Acting from Illinois State University and has taught master classes and workshops at UCLA, Steppenwolf, around the U.S. and in Tokyo.

GIL CATES, JR. (Executive Director) As Executive Director, Gil Cates, Jr. leads the Geffen Playhouse in its mission to inform, entertain and inspire diverse audiences with live theater of the highest caliber — both within and beyond the nonprofit theater’s walls. He has proudly served on the Geffen Playhouse Board since 2012. Gil’s theater credits include the awardwinning Names (Matrix Theatre Company) starring Dixie Carter and Greg Mullavey, The Night I Knocked Out Joe Frazer and Lost 90 Pounds (Gardner Stage Theater), Three Sisters and David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre (both at Syracuse Stage). Gil’s film credits include The Surface (starring Sean Astin and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Chris Mulkey), Jobs (starring Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad, Dermot Mulroney, as well as Geffen Playhouse alumni Matthew Modine and Ron Eldard) and the 2011 feature film Lucky (starring Colin Hanks, Ari Graynor, Ann-Margret and Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Tambor). In addition, Gil produced and directed the critically acclaimed Life After Tomorrow, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, which won best documentary at the Phoenix Film Festival and later premiered on Showtime. His other films include Deal (starring Burt Reynolds, Bret Harrison and Charles Durning), The Mesmerist (starring Geffen Playhouse alumnus Neil Patrick Harris), and the critically acclaimed independent film Order of Chaos. Gil’s television directorial debut was an episode of the NBC comedy Joey, starring Emmy winner Matt LeBlanc. He studied at the National Theatre Institute in Waterford, Connecticut, and holds a B.F.A. in Drama from Syracuse University.

REGINA MILLER (Chief Development Officer) Regina has advised nonprofit institutions, foundations and corporations on strategy, analysis and fundraising. She has consulted for the Clinton Foundation, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Eastern Congo Initiative, Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project and Kershaw’s Challenge, among others. Prior to the Geffen, Regina worked for the Simon Wiesenthal Center/Museum of Tolerance, where she produced an innovative human rights exhibition that traveled to 14 international destinations around Europe, Asia and the U.S. She also served as the Director of Partnerships for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles and the Inland Empire, where she led strategic planning and development while executing policies that advanced the organization’s visibility and growth. Additionally, Regina has a strong passion for teaching. After graduating from University of North Carolina School of the Arts, she taught in preschools and kindergartens in New York. From the age of 13, Regina worked as a professional dancer on Broadway as well as with a number of prominent modern dance ensembles. Fusing two of her interests, she created a highly successful program that incorporated dance therapy and creative movement into an early childhood curriculum as well as writing and producing a television show based on this concept. In addition to being a published author and photographer with Tallfellow Press and Prometheus Books, Regina has taught and lectured at numerous schools in New York, Los Angeles and abroad. Regina is a proud cofounder of the Artemis Agency, a philanthropic agency that actively helps clients change the world!
