From the Producing Director
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE Welcome to the first play of the Geffen Playhouse 09/10 season. It is with great pleasure that we bring you a rollicking satire that is sure to amuse the senses and provoke the mind. Matthew Modine Saves the Alpacas is a breath of fresh air, a comedy to be sure, but rich with social conscience. Blair Singer has written a play that magnifies the ridiculous excesses of celebrity life and explores what one will do to enjoy those excesses. If we were to describe Blair’s new play in just two words, they would surely be ‘relevant’ and ‘irreverent’.
% gray kground
And as in the past when we have an irreverent comedy in our midst, we go to one of today’s greatest comic directors to take the helm. Happily, John Rando, who previously directed The Underpants, All in the Timing and Merton of the Movies returns to the Geffen. Adding to the collaboration between John and Blair is the extraordinarily talented Matthew Modine without whom this play could obviously not exist. Matthew has fearlessly helped to create a callow, clueless version of himself that couldn’t be further from the actor we know and love. With a cast that includes the two incomparable comedians Peri Gilpin and French Stewart, John Rando has assembled a cracker jack ensemble that is having as good a time performing this play as you will have watching it. The design challenges for Matthew Modine Saves the Alpacas at times felt as insurmountable as the task of saving the Chimborazzi tribe. Our expert design team has created worlds spanning from Hollywood PR offices to mountain peaks in Ecuador all to tell this wonderful story of celebrity humanitarianism. Our team includes set designer Beowulf Boritt, lighting designer Jeff Croiter – who we are pleased to welcome to the Geffen for the first time, as well as costume designer Robert Blackman, sound designer Jon Gottlieb and prop master Chuck Olsen – all of whom we welcome back for the umpteenth time. The entire Geffen family is elated by the plays in our season line-up. We certainly have something for everyone – some satire, some farce, a bit of historical fiction, a bit of true history and a musical about the darker side of human nature. We look forward to having you join us for what promises to be an exciting and invigorating ride.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRANK G. MANCUSO
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the new season at our beautiful Geffen Playhouse. We are very excited about this year’s schedule. Gilbert Cates, Randall Arney and our creative department have put together a very promising program that we hope you will enjoy. If you haven’t renewed your subscription, now is the time to do it. I also want to welcome our many new subscribers to the Geffen Playhouse family. Recently, I read a final report submitted to a foundation that made a large grant to help fund our education programs (school tours, student matinees, senior citizens, and Saturday Scene). The report documented the grant’s impact. I was very moved, as I read letter after letter from principals, teachers and students attesting to how much our programs mean to them. The passion that was expressed for what they saw, what they felt and what will stay with them from their Geffen Playhouse experience made me very proud of our extensive programs in education. A visual experience is one that vividly lasts. It is only fitting that our theater, with its close association with one of the great institutions of learning in the country, UCLA, should have one of the very best theater arts education programs. None of this is possible without your continued financial support. Your involvement is more important now than ever. All you need to do is read the headlines in newspapers or the internet about the continuing cutbacks at our schools, the elimination of the art, theater and music programs, to realize how much your financial contributions to the Geffen Playhouse education programs will mean to our children. Finally, thank you to the Edgerton Foundation for their support of Matthew Modine Saves the Alpacas and for their generous involvement in new play development at the Geffen Playhouse. We will be working with six playwrights over the next three years to develop new plays for the American stage; and we hope you will join us in the excitement, challenges and tremendous satisfaction of bringing outstanding new plays to life! Now, sit back and enjoy Matthew Modine Saves the Alpacas.
Respectfully yours,
