From the Producing Director
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE Carole Haber has impeccable theatrical taste.
While she is a close friend, she never forces her view on others. However, when I learned that Carole and a group of producers were going to present Next Fall in New York, I was intrigued. This was the first full length play that the very talented actor/director Geoffrey Nauffts had written. So we got a copy of the script and fell in love with it. It is certainly different from the first play of our season, The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity by Kristoffer Diaz. But, each playwright elects a different way to tell a story. It can be loud and ‘in your face’ or it can be subtle and entwining. Geoffrey Nauffts approaches his subject with a quiet humor and sensitivity that envelops the audience in an entirely different way and will not let us go. We are pleased to have done these plays side by side as they run the gamut of style and form and yet each delivers a wallop in its own right. Further, Next Fall continues our mission to do second and third productions of new plays for the purpose of honing and supporting the ongoing artistic process. We are pleased to have the play’s original director Sheryl Kaller who has assembled another stellar cast, altogether different from her first go-round with the play. Achieving her ideal in casting, the play’s writer Geoffrey Nauffts has been cast in the role of Adam, one of the characters he so lovingly created. This opportunity to work with a new group of actors and apply what has been learned thus far is a crucial part of new play development. In addition to a wonderful cast, Sheryl has also brought together worldclass designers. Wilson Chin (Scenic Designer), Jeff Croiter (Lighting Designer), Kate Bergh (Costume Designer), and John Gromada (Composer/Sound Designer) have contributed immensely to the fluidity of scenes that constantly shift in time and space. Next Fall is part love story, part social commentary and very much a play that examines the lines of tolerance and intolerance that we all cross on a daily basis. It achieves all of this by asking two of the most fundamental questions — who do we love, and why do we love them? At the end of the day, it really comes down to nothing more. See you at the theater,

FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRANK G. MANCUSO
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the second show of our
2011/2012 season, Geoffrey Nauffts’ Next Fall. This poignant story of faith, love and redemption is deeply moving, as well as seasonally appropriate. Autumn marks many wonderful, fresh starts at the Geffen Playhouse, namely the beginning of our season and the launching of our Fall Campaign. Our Fall Campaign is enormously important to the Geffen Playhouse, as it affords us the opportunity to reach out to our extraordinary supporters whose donations bring our education programs to the broader Los Angeles community. Every call we make during the Fall Campaign is a connection to our valued patrons who recognize the value of what our theater has to offer – and who are dedicated to bringing the magic of our stage to countless underprivileged youths who would not otherwise have access to it. As one who is enamored and enthralled by the theater, I feel a deep personal commitment to bringing live performance to the tens of thousands of underprivileged students we reach every year. I was once one of those youths lucky enough attend a show that I found profoundly moving, and it is my recollections of theater visits as a child that resound with me when I consider how crucial it is that we continue to deliver exceptional performances to young Angelenos. It is your generosity that makes it possible. With every donation, we know there is an immediate sense of gratification that comes from knowing you are making a huge contribution to scores of Angelenos, but we also look forward to rewarding our gracious benefactors in December with a special performance followed by a wine and dessert reception. It is always a pleasure to celebrate your generosity, and this event promises to be an extraordinary one. Thank you for joining us this evening. Now, I invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy Next Fall. Respectfully yours,

Taking on a new role: Geoffrey Nauffts examines the difficulties of his protagonist by stepping into his shoes
Geoffrey Nauffts There are many stages in the development of a play, not the least of which is what actors do to create characters once they are in rehearsal. Literary Manager Amy Levinson had the opportunity to sit down with Geoffrey Nauffts to discuss the creation of Next Fall, the painstaking work that went into crafting the story he hoped to tell, and how he is navigating the dual role of playwright and actor in this incarnation. AL: I’d love to hear about the genesis and development process of Next Fall and the theater where it began, Naked Angels. GN: Naked Angels is an off-Broadway theater company that has been around for over 25 years now. I have been with the company for much of that time. A group of young artists, many of whom were writers like Jon Robin Baitz, Kenneth Lonergan, Warren Leight — as well as directors and actors including Joe Mantello, Marisa Tomei, Matthew P4 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe
Broderick, Rob Morrow, Nancy Travis and Lili Taylor came together to create an ensemble. It was very much in the vein of Steppenwolf. One of the great privileges of being part of an ensemble is that you get to try on many different hats. So, at a very early stage in my career, although I had come into the company as an actor, I was able to start producing, directing and writing, and was lucky enough to have some of my work staged, which doesn’t often happen as a young artist working in New York City. In addition to the workings of the ensemble, Naked Angels has a play development wing. It is designed as a three-tier process. The first tier, Tuesdays@9, is a weekly writers’ program, offered to the public, free of charge, in both New York and Los Angeles. Writers submit ten minutes of their work, be it playwrighting, screenwriting, fiction, teleplays, songwriting or poetry, which is then read out loud, cold, and without any feedback. It’s a great way to gauge what’s working and what’s not. A lot of Next Fall was developed in this Tuesday night program. The next tier, First Mondays, is when a play is completed, and we do a reading of it in its entirety, for the first
time, in front of an audience. Next Fall continued into this tier of development. It was incredibly informative, and that was when Sheryl Kaller, our fearless leader, came on board. AL: Had you worked with Sheryl Kaller (the director of Next Fall) previously? GN: I had not worked with her, no. Jenny Gersten, who was the Artistic Director at the time, had worked with Sheryl previously and thought we would be a good pairing. It was a wonderful collaboration right from the beginning. Her compassion, intelligence, humor and sensitivity made her a really good fit for the play. Sheryl then helmed the third part of the development process, the workshop portion of the series known as Angels in Progress, when we really dug in and took it to the next level. These workshops are used in whatever way is most useful to the playwright. For me, I wanted to focus on the text, so it was a lot of me sitting around the table with a group of actors and Sheryl asking a lot of questions. I would go home and rewrite, and come in the next day with new pages, and by the week’s end we held two public readings.
next fall
BY AMY LEVINSON AL: Did you read the role of Adam in the initial workshop? GN: No. It was talked about, but Jenny (the Artistic Director at Naked Angels) really lobbied for me to solely focus on being the writer. I’m really grateful she did because I was able to put that hat on and really have that experience. And, I think the play benefited from that immensely. I see now the difficulties I might have encountered had I chosen to be in it at the time. Jumping back and forth from actor to writer in rehearsal at the moment can be a bit challenging, but the good news is that after all that development and both productions in New York, the piece is pretty much what it is. I’m not saying there won’t be a little rewriting, but my job as playwright is much easier than it was initially when the play was undergoing so much change. AL: I have a question in regards to the characterizations of Adam and Luke. Please feel free to disagree, but it seems as though you wrote Luke to be the more sympathetic member of the couple. Was this intentional on your part, based on a liberal bent toward which theater audiences can lean? GN: I think it’s an easy thing, as a liberal audience, to sympathize with Adam’s point of view and automatically side with him. So I chose to make him opinionated, selfrighteous, and a little, frankly, annoying, as some of us liberals can be, particularly when we think we have all the answers. My goal was to try and present a fair and balanced argument here. But the other mistake I could have made was to make the Luke character this vision of perfection, this beatific character, and I didn’t want to lean too far in that direction either. I think there are moments for Luke in the play where he shows what his belief system costs him. There’s a particular low point for Luke, when Adam says, “Look at you, you’re like an animal in a trap trying to gnaw your own leg off.” But on the flip side, Adam, with all of his atheistic, bombastic righteousness, experiences his own suffering for having no belief system. He’s a hypochondriac who falls into the depths of despair at one point in the play, admitting that, “You don’t have to believe in Hell to walk around feeling like you’re going to burn in it.” I personally relate to that because although I’m an agnostic, not an atheist, I didn’t grow up with any kind of faith, yet still carry a huge amount
of guilt and shame with me. For the most part I am glad not to have been saddled with the constraints that organized religion can impose, but there’s another part of me that feels like I lack a certain peace I might possess if I had a more defined set of beliefs in place. AL: The play is very careful in its way to look at both sides of that argument. While the negative aspects are brought to light, so are the upsides of having a deep belief in something beyond what is known. There is an element of grace.
GN: I see the more challenging aspects of this role having to play it now. So many lines. I mean, come on, doesn’t this guy ever shut up? In all seriousness, I’m being reminded that when an actor has difficulty with a particular section of dialogue, the playwright really needs to pay attention to that and possibly fix something that isn’t working. I think it’s easy to sit on the other side, as the writer, and just say, “No, play it like this, this is really clear.” But in truth, actors can tell a writer so much about what works and what doesn’t. I had the great fortune of watching Naked Angels’ company member Patrick Breen create the role of Adam in New York. He is really one of the best actors I know, so I’m stealing all of his bits. In addition, because I wrote the thing, I have a pretty good understanding of who Adam is and how he operates. As with all of the characters in this play, I suppose there’s a bit of me in Adam, more than a bit if I’m being honest, and that certainly helps me figure things out. And, the good news is, I can rewrite it if it’s not working — I don’t have to deal with the playwright saying, “Just do it the way I wrote it!” I thought the toughest part would be not sitting next to Sheryl in the rehearsal room. We’re both very collaborative artists who’ve always lived by the idea that you never know where the good idea is going to come from. We feed off of each other’s creativity. So we’ve been very much a team as writer/ director in developing this piece. There’s comfortable shorthand between the two of us that’s made the whole situation much easier than I expected. I mean, sure sometimes she’ll ask me after a scene, “What did you think?” and I’ll say, “I don’t know. I was in it! You tell me.” But for the most part, it’s been extremely easy. And my cast mates have been incredibly supportive and understanding of the process. Sheryl is an amazingly nurturing director, who understands the piece so well at this point, almost as if she’d written it herself, I feel completely safe and taken care of, both as actor and writer, with her at the helm.
GN: It was important to me not to indict Christianity but rather to point out the flaws I see in all organized religions. That’s one of the reasons I set the play in a Jewish hospital. There is hypocrisy in all religion, as well as great beauty. I am particularly fascinated by the manipulation of religion for our own purposes. In our world today, it seems to have strayed so far from the traditions that were originally intended, and that’s a little sad to me. I did have a surprising response to the play from some members of the gay community, who were frustrated that I was giving voice to the Christian, gay character, something that members of the community wanted to see left behind, a conversation that we no longer needed to have. They didn’t want to sympathize with Luke, they wanted him to get over himself and his religious roots as they themselves had. But to me, that’s the easy way out. These people are still out there … struggling to live their lives truthfully, while holding onto the beliefs that mean so much to them. I don’t see it as black and white, I think there’s a lot of grey there, and I wanted to give both characters a valid argument, one that is far bigger than gay or straight, religious or not. I had always hoped that the play would resonate on a global level in terms of how religion divides us and can often influence our political points of view. I thought if I could throw a microscope on these two guys who exist at the opposite ends of the spectrum and then throw love into the equation, we might see on a more global scale how we can coexist for the sake of others and ourselves.
AL: And she wanted you to play this role so much.
AL: I wanted to ask you about playing the role of Adam. As the writer, are you discovering new things in Adam as you play the role? How are you navigating the writer/actor aspect of this?
GN: She did — she dragged me kicking and screaming to it, and I’m really grateful she did. Fingers crossed, and a little divine intervention, and hopefully it will all go smoothly. PErFORMANCEs MAGAZINE P5

donor spotlight Many Thanks to Michael Centeno for his Leadership as Chairman of the Geffen Playhouse Advisory Board The Geffen Playhouse acknowledges Michael Centeno for his incredible support in advancing our education and outreach programs throughout Los Angeles as Chairman of our Advisory Board. A respected businessman, Michael serves as Vice President of Transamerica Retirement Services, one of the oldest and most prestigious retirement planning and insurance corporations in the U.S. On top of his role at Transamerica, Michael devotes significant time and effort toward serving the Latino community and bringing arts to low-income Angelenos of all ages. Michael’s other passion is his family, and he has three children with his wife Valarie De La Garza, also a member of the Geffen Playhouse Advisory Board. Speaking about his volunteerism and community involvement, Michael has said, “I come from humble beginnings. I witnessed how hard my parents worked – year after year. As I grew older, I realized how fortunate I was to have both of my parents involved in my upbringing. My childhood helped to form my character. Upon college graduation, I knew that I had to give back to the community – specifically to kids from underserved communities. Today, I feel blessed with prosperity and believe it is my destiny to give back to those less fortunate. Year after year, as the economy prospers or rescinds, the underserved community continues to suffer with various setbacks or cutbacks from a variety of socio or economic conditions. As a full time executive at a financial institution and father of three boys, I believe if I can find the time to volunteer my time – anyone should be able to find time to volunteer and help others less fortunate.” As Chairman of our Advisory Board, Michael has been instrumental in helping the Geffen Playhouse create lasting partnerships with individuals, corporations and foundations alike. For example, Michael recently helped expand Transamerica’s existing relationship with 20th Street Elementary School, located near Transamerica’s Downtown L.A. office, to secure funding to underwrite the Geffen Playhouse’s signature Story Pirates Play/ Write program at the school. It is campaigns like these that demonstrate Michael’s exceptional ability to P18 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe
