NIGHTMARE ALLEY
FROM THE PRODUCING DIRECTOR
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED CIRCUSES AND CARNIVALS.
As a summer job, while attending Syracuse University, I worked as a guesser of weight and age at the Skaneateles Fair in New York State. Later I directed many circus shows for NBC television’s International Showtime and my first feature film was Rings Around the World, a 1964 film about extraordinary circus acts. So I guess I was just waiting for Jonathan Brielle to bring me his musical adaptation of Willam L. Gresham’s Nightmare Alley. I loved the score instantly and it became my dream project: a new musical about carnie life. Jonathan, an astonishing talent, had been working on it for many years. As the composer and writer of the piece, he was eager to bring in a collaborator and so our journey began on Nightmare Alley. It is a thoughtful story of fate, fortune and folly. At its heart it asks the question, “Why do we do what we do, instead of what we should do?” I am not sure any of us has the answer, but we ask it of ourselves all the time. We called upon good friends to join us. Two Geffen alums, choreographer Kay Cole and musical director Gerald Sternbach have worked closely with us through the process that has taken two years and two full workshops. Their contributions have been invaluable. We also have the pleasure of working with some of our favorite designers on this piece. Set designer John Arnone was able to build a carnie milieu that has literally transformed our theater into that unique culture. Dan Ionazzi, lighting designer, Christina Haatainen Jones, costume designer, and Brian Hsieh, sound designer have in turn worked tirelessly to build upon this initial design. I hope you find it visually and aurally stimulating. And then there’s the cast. What a special group. One of the hardest working and most talented with which I have ever been associated. It has been an interesting ride for us all. Jonathan Brielle and I have been lucky to work on a true labor of love. With our wonderful team of collaborators, I believe we have brought the world of carnie out of the past and into the Geffen Playhouse - so please join us and step inside Nightmare Alley. See you at the theater,
Gilbert Cates Producing Director

FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRANK G. MANCUSO
THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE’S 2009-2010 season. The theater’s Board is very proud of what we offer our audience as well as how we are impacting our community with our educational and outreach programs. As part of our desire to expand these programs, we are pleased to announce two new initiatives. One, which will serve low income seniors and the second that will serve our veterans at the UCLA and VA hospitals, and will be led by Board member Susan Mallory from Northern Trust. We hope that both of these programs will add some small measure of pleasure to the lives of our senior citizens and veterans. We will keep you updated as these programs develop. If you were not at the Geffen Playhouse on March 22nd for our 2010 annual Backstage at the Geffen event, you missed an extraordinarily entertaining evening. We honored Barry Meyer (Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros.) and Kristin Chenoweth. The evening was filled with great stories about what happens backstage when the curtain drops. Additionally, wonderful musical entertainment was provided by Tony Award winner Alan Cumming, virtuoso violinist Sarah Chang and the incomparable Dick Van Dyke and the Vantastix. One of the highlights of the evening was surprising Gil Cates, my dear friend and the producing director of our theater with the naming of the main stage. Our Board is pleased to say that from this point on the main stage will be called the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse. It is only fitting that the newly named Gil Cates Theater’s first production Nightmare Alley is directed by Gil Cates. We are proud to have you as part of our treasured Geffen family and I thank you for your continued support. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Respectfully yours,

S K A E R F STEP RIGHT UP! The biggest, the grandest, the greatest sideshow on the face of the earth! It’s the 10-in-1! More freaks, more wonders, more strange and unusual people than any other traveling sideshow in the entire world. The price to see the side show? One ticket. 10 big acts. 50 cents — a half a dollar — get your ticket and come in now! The 10-in-1 was a program of ten sequential acts under one tent for a single admission price. Typically, it was part “freak show” exhibiting human oddities and part “working acts” that would include magic tricks or daredevil stunts. Here are just a few examples of what your 50 cents might get you:
The Barker
Harry Lewiston (1900 - 1965) was an American showman, freak show director, and barker. His wife Rose Adelstein, worked as a mentalist/ fortuneteller under the name "Madame Zindra."
The Bearded Lady
Annie Jones Elliot (1860 – 1902) was an American bearded woman, born in Virginia. She toured with showman P. T. Barnum as a circus attraction. By the age of five, she had a mustache and sideburns and became well known as the "Bearded Girl.” Jones married Richard Elliot in 1881, but divorced him in 1895 for her childhood sweetheart.
The Siamese Twins
Chang Bunker and Eng Bunker (1811 – 1874) were the conjoined twin brothers whose condition and birthplace became the basis for the term "Siamese Twins.” The Bunker brothers were born in Siam (now Thailand). They were discovered and exhibited as a curiosity during a world tour. After they retired, they settled on a 110 acre farm in North Carolina and became naturalized citizens of the U.S.
The World’s Tallest Man
Jacob Rheuben Ehrlich (1906 - 1952) was an American silent film actor and sideshow performer. Due to acromegalic gigantism, Earle was one of the world's tallest humans at the time of his death, standing at 7.75 feet (2.36 m) in tall. For 14 years, he traveled with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and then became a salesman.
The Geek
Zip the Pinhead, born William Henry Johnson (1843 -1926), was an American freak show performer famous for his oddly tapered head. It was told to the audience that a tribe of "missing links" had been discovered in Africa, and that Zip was one of these. It was further P4 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE

STEP RIGHT UP! explained that the "wild man," subsisted on raw meat, nuts and fruit. Zip would then be revealed in a cage where he could rattle the bars and screech. This act was tremendously successful for P.T. Barnum, and Zip was as big a draw. On his death bed, Zip’s last words to his sister were: “Well, we fooled ‘em for a long time, didn’t we?”
Flea Circus
A flea circus refers to a circus sideshow attraction in which fleas are attached (or appear to be attached) to miniature carts and other items, and encouraged to perform circus acts within a small housing. Fresnel lenses were provided to help visitors to view the attraction. The first records of flea performances were from watch makers who were demonstrating their metal working skills. Flea circuses were first advertised as early as 1833 in England, and were a main carnival attraction until 1930.
Sword Swallowing
An ancient performance art in which the performer passes a sword through the mouth and down the esophagus towards the stomach. Originating in India before 2000 BC, sword swallowing was featured at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition at the Chicago World's Fair. This spawned the beginning of the popularity of the American practice of the art.
Fire Eating
Became a part of the standard sideshow acts in the late 1880s and is often seen as one of the entry-level skills for sideshow performers. The most torches extinguished in one minute with the mouth is 68 and was achieved by Hubertus Wawra. New York City based fire performer Flambeaux set the world record in 2008 for keeping a lit torch in his mouth for a full 57 seconds. Tim Black of Australia has the record for "Highest Flame Blown" at 7.2 meters.
The Human Dynamo
An act in which the performer would appear to be immune to the effects of electricity — actually a phenomenon of high voltage electricity which permits an ungrounded person to light neon or fluorescent tubes at a touch, and do other similar stunts without being harmed. Cheap, fake medical devices were readily available, making the trick easy to build, but this is a very dangerous stunt if done wrong.
Modern Day Sideshows
The 999 Eyes of Endless Dream Carnival Museum & Sideshow takes modern-day freaks on tour. Coney Island — Sideshows by the Seashore is the last true ten-in-one in the USA. According to the website: “They're here, they're real and they're alive! Freaks, wonders and human curiosities!” (Information compiled by Kristina Leach)
