red hot patriot: the kick-ass wit of molly ivins
From the artistic Director
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE Since he founded the Geffen Playhouse in 1995, Gil Cates has welcomed you to each show. With this letter — the first page you see when perusing the details of each of our plays — Gil intended to greet you, to thank you for coming and hopefully to give you a greater insight into the production. He believed, as I do, that because we select the plays and have had the opportunity to spend significant time with each one before its opening, that we should do whatever possible to “set the stage” for you. If, through a simple note, we can shed some light on our choice or give some context to the evening and thereby enhance your enjoyment or understanding, we are happy to do so. With that, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins. Director David Esbjornson, our longtime friend and collaborator, first introduced this project to us. David had worked with Kathleen Turner and the co-writers Margaret Engel and Allison Engel in an earlier incarnation, and they were all eager to re-visit and continue to refine the work. We are thrilled to create that opportunity for them.

We knew we had a potent combination: a smart script, an incredible design team and David’s keen analytical instincts combined with Ms. Turner’s fiery and passionate approach to her work — an approach reflective of our iconic protagonist of the evening, Molly Ivins. In a year that we are entering another election cycle, it seems fitting to focus on a woman who helped define the role of the media in the political arena. In our current climate where pundits seem more concerned with ratings than with truly rating a candidate, where sound and fury often trumps wit and wisdom, it is satisfying to see a portrayal of a true political commentator. While Ms. Ivins’ point of view was quite liberal, particularly for her Texas readership, she always made an effort to examine issues from all sides and admitted bias when she felt it was unavoidable. Her life, like those of other historical figures, makes for good drama because it was marked with passion and her undying courage of conviction — the hallmarks of a trailblazer. It is with this brand of passion that we always attempt to tackle our work here at the Geffen, and we hope you enjoy the fruits of our labor. Enjoy the show,

I write this note to you with equal parts sadness and resolve: sadness because, as most of you know, we experienced the devastating loss of our founder, leader and friend Gil Cates in October; but resolve because now more than ever, we are inspired and committed to honor Gil’s memory by ensuring that this theater — his legacy — continues to thrive. Logistically this will not be hard — Gil left us with a handpicked team who shares his passion, integrity and knowledge, and with a foundation that is solid. Emotionally, we will simply miss him. Gil and I raised a glass together just two weeks before his passing at a joyous evening thanking many of the donors who helped to make Gil’s dream a reality last season. We toasted together that night not only to celebrate what we had become as the Geffen Playhouse, but also to celebrate where we were going. In less than 20 years, through courage, vision and old-fashioned hard work, Gil built from the ground up the kind of renowned cultural center that it often takes decades to establish. He created a home for artists and audiences alike where world-class theater was coupled with the warmth and accessibility of Gil himself. He took his own passion for turning art into education and championed an outreach program that made our theater an integral part of our community, and by doing so, he not only touched each of us, but the tens of thousands of students whose lives his programs affected each year. So while we are all sharing in what we have lost, I also invite you to share in what Gil helped us to gain. In the end, it was his heart that gave out on him; but in a way it makes sense — there’s no doubt in my mind that it was the most used muscle in his body. Gil’s heart was bursting with love for his family, his circle of friends, the entertainment community and for this theater in particular. So, I ask you tonight to figuratively join me (and Gil) in raising a glass to this wonderful theater that Gil dreamt, built and cultivated, and to a legacy that will continue to touch the lives of artists, audiences and communities for many years to come. Cheers. Respectfully yours,

the nature of biography on stage BY AMY LEVINSON
Left to Right: Molly Ivins; Kathleen Turner; Marie Curie; Anna Gunn in Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie; Thurgood Marshall; Laurence Fishburne in Thurgood
It is no accident that the Geffen has been attracted to plays of a historical and biographical nature in the last couple of seasons. As theater practitioners, it seems a natural fit to dramatize these figures as our way of getting to know them. New plays often serve to address these societal cravings — this need for context for the world in which we currently find ourselves. Recognizing the need for a higher level of debate and discovery around the last election, playwright George Stevens, Jr. took on the subject of Thurgood Marshall, a play which we chose to produce in 2010. And for those of us who only had a hazy sketch of what Marshall did for civil rights, the story of one man’s boldness and brilliance paints for us a landscape of our entire country at a crucial time in our history. But beyond this sort of vague yearning for a bygone era, there is something truly satisfying about spending an evening with the personification of someone with whom we all wished to rub elbows. When Laurence Fishburne transformed into Thurgood Marshall each night, the audience was transported and felt as though they were getting the story directly from Marshall himself, thus, P4 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe
tying us closer to a history that was either incomplete or even entirely unknown to them. Personal connection to historical figures continued to woo audiences in the case of Alan Alda’s beautiful play Radiance: The Passion of Marie Curie. We were given an entirely new and personal view of an iconic woman of science. It is a wonderful journey to go inside the mind and heart of the woman making these discoveries and to see that like us, she had life’s trials to overcome. She was ostracized for being a woman, for being a foreigner, for having an extramarital affair, and through all of the criticism and discouragement from her peers, she rose to be arguably the most important woman science has ever known. There is great joy in bringing Marie Curie’s inner life to the stage more than 100 years after her discoveries—and through the microcosm of Marie’s life, we recognize the larger picture of what it means to have one’s personal life interfere with their ability to thrive. Further, it explores the complications of being a woman in a man’s world. Which brings us to Molly Ivins — the brash, no bull Texas writer who took on politicians and the media response
to them in equal measure. Her spicy discourse, used to tackle big business, dirty politics and general bad manners, makes an ideal dramatic subject. As we enter another already charged election year, Ivins (personified by the inimitable Kathleen Turner) is a refreshing reminder that what we crave culturally, is perhaps what we need as a society. She speaks candidly, has strong opinions and is willing to take on dissenters, and although she is critical of American behavior, her love of country is apparent in the very profession she chose. In some ways, Ivins is different as a biographical subject, as she is less known and therefore is being introduced to an audience rather than revived for them. Here too, is a reason to encourage bio-drama — sometimes the truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and more often than not, it’s usually funnier. With each of these plays, there is a hope that by casting a light on distinction that has preceded these times, we may be able to recognize glimpses of excellence in the world in which we currently live. And even without that loftier goal, we can simply enjoy witnessing greatness in all its theatrical glory.

Mary Ann has been a valuable member of the Geffen Playhouse Board of Directors since September 2007; has served on a number of committees for our annual fundraiser, Backstage at the Geffen; and has very generously designated the Geffen Playhouse as a beneficiary of a major planned gift. We are immensely grateful to Mary Ann for her generosity, enthusiasm, experience and wisdom. A respected professional with over 35 years of accounting, tax and consulting experience, Mary Ann serves as a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where she is a member of the Global Board of Partners and Principals and recently completed her second term on the US Board of Partners and Principals. Mary Ann also served many years as the President of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Charitable Foundation, Inc., which makes charitable contributions to the people of PwC in times of financial hardship, and to non-profit organizations that support and promote humanitarianism and education causes. She stepped down as President on October 1, 2011 but remains on the Board of Trustees.
“Mary Ann is an exemplary board member and is truly a valued member of our Geffen Playhouse family. Her love of theater and broad experience in the business world have come together to benefit our theater in a major way.”
Speaking about Mary Ann, Geffen Playhouse Chairman of the Board Frank G. Mancuso has said, “Mary Ann is an exemplary board member and is truly a valued member of our Geffen Playhouse family. Her love of theater and broad experience in the business world have come together to benefit our theater in a major way.” Once again, we offer our heartfelt gratitude to Mary Ann Cloyd for her outstanding commitment and immense contributions to the Geffen Playhouse. Meet the 4th Wall Member
Aaron Holzman Part of The 4th Wall since May 2009 How did you discover The 4th Wall? My friend Dahlia Metchis introduced me to the group and we have probably attended 90% of the events together. Usually the moment the emails go out announcing that tickets for the next event are on sale, we IM each other and debate whose turn it is to buy the tickets this time. Five minutes later we’ve bought the tickets and I’m putting the date in my calendar. Are you an L.A. native and what field do you work in? I am originally from Bethesda, Maryland, which is right outside of Washington, D.C. My parents have been avid theatergoers there for years. Since I have been attending more theater through The 4th Wall events in L.A., I’ve begun going to more shows when I am home visiting them. I currently work at A&E Television Network as the assistant to the head of scripted series. What do you enjoy the most about The 4th Wall events at the Geffen Playhouse? The performances are always enjoyable and I’ve seen a very diverse mix of shows at the Geffen. But I think the most enjoyable aspect of the events is the camaraderie. I’ve met a lot of great new people through The 4th Wall. Whenever I bring a new person to a performance I tell them that I will introduce them to the other “regulars” — a number of whom I met when I attended my first event and who I look forward to seeing every time I go. Everyone is very friendly and sociable and I never know who I might run into or meet. I’ve also enjoyed meeting those involved with the productions, particularly members of the cast. What other activities do you enjoy in your spare time? Los Angeles is one of the best cities in the world for live entertainment, so in addition to theater, I really enjoy attending a lot of comedy shows and concerts. Probably my favorite activity in my spare time is playing tennis. I’ve been playing since I was three years old, and one of my favorite things about Los Angeles is that you can play tennis outside just about any day of the year.
