GIL CATES THEATER AT THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE

STAGE KISS
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR SARAH RUHL HAS ONE OF THE MOST DISTINCT voices in contemporary American theater. Wry, funny, understated, often blurring the lines between the real and the surreal, she has aptly described her plays as “three-dimensional poems.” I have long looked forward to introducing Geffen audiences to her work. I am delighted to welcome Sarah for the first time with Stage Kiss and to have longtime Geffen collaborator Bart DeLorenzo helming the production. Bart last directed for us in 2014 with Steven Drukman’s Death of the Author. Frothy and contemplative by turns, Stage Kiss follows two longestranged former lovers who are cast in a revival of a 1930s melodrama to play — what else? — long-estranged former lovers starting a heady affair. Through an uncomfortable reunion turned reignited flame, the play delves into questions of artifice versus reality and asks what it means to enact intimacy onstage. Is life imitating art here, or is it the other way around? And is a kiss ever really “just” a kiss? Bart has brought together a team of designers who masterfully transport us backstage, onstage, offstage, and back again, and an incredibly talented cast of actors who have gamely tackled not one but two playswithin-the-play. At once a delicious, wickedly clever send-up of theatrical tropes and a love letter to the strange, ephemeral art form to which theater artists dedicate their lives, Stage Kiss seeks both to charm and to hold the mirror up to our fascination with playing pretend. As always, I am thrilled to welcome you to the Gil Cates Theater — whether it be for the first time or the fiftieth. Enjoy the show! Randall Arney ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

GIL CATES, JR. WELCOME TO STAGE KISS IN THE GIL CATES THEATER! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for being a part of the Geffen Playhouse family this year — our 20th anniversary season — whether you’re a long-time subscriber, donor or new to the theater. As we reflect on the past 20 years and look toward a bright and expanding future, it is with much enthusiasm and pride that I share with you an important update on the future of the organization. This year, we are launching the public phase of our Legacy Fund campaign, which will ensure the stability and longevity of this theater. The Legacy Fund has been made possible by extraordinary leadership gifts pledged during the initial phase of the campaign this past year, along with a significant challenge grant generously provided by David Geffen. Still, this is just the beginning. To learn more about the Legacy Fund, please contact Regina Miller, our Chief Development Officer, at 310.208.6500 ext. 112 or reginam@geffenplayhouse.com. Our dreams for the theater continue to grow, as does the critical need in our community for the type of bold artistic work, innovative education programming and long-term cultural impact we are committed to providing. We look forward to expanding our artistic initiatives, building new partnerships, deepening our community engagement and continuing to develop new audiences for generations to come. With sincere gratitude to all of you who have been, and continue to be, an integral part of the Geffen Playhouse.

KISSING & TELLING BY AMY LEVINSON SARAH RUHL’S STAGE KISS IS A PLAY WITHIN A PLAY WITHIN A PLAY. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF SPEAKING TO SARAH AND DIRECTOR BART DeLORENZO ABOUT THAT WHICH DREW THEM TO THE IDEAS CONTAINED WITHIN THIS LOVE LETTER TO THE THEATER, AND HOW EACH LAYER OF MAKE-BELIEVE CULMINATED IN SOMETHING SO TRULY PROFOUND. HERE’S WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY. Amy Levinson: Stage Kiss is such a beautiful

Because the play is about the nature of illusion, there are some subtle jokes in the set about how we create illusions in the theater. My hope is that the beginning and the end are in the empty space of the theater itself — one of my favorite places to be — a place of possibility and transformation.
When a play has been produced multiple times, as this one has, do you feel you still have things to learn from each new incarnation/production? Always. Every new group of actors brings a new chemistry and inflection. It’s one thing I love about writing plays — there’s an elasticity in the form that

A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR BART DeLORENZO THERE ARE SO MANY TRADITIONS IN THE THEATER — AND MANY OF THEM I LOVE — BUT WHEN THE CURTAIN RISES IN A SARAH RUHL PLAY, I THINK IRONICALLY THERE ARE NO RULES. Absolutely anything can happen. Her plays always feel like she’s making them up on the spot and I need to let go and become a child again watching my first Photo by Chelsey Rosetter.
play. She paints the world as this crazy, mysterious place filled with strange people where everything is always changing. Her characters never seem to know what they’re doing or why they’re doing it and are often the most astonished by their own behavior. That’s something I really recognize. And like life, these plays keep veering from comedy to poetry to farce and then to some weird mix that you’ve never quite felt before. I think Sarah uses all the tools in the box when she writes — different styles and forms, whatever draws her — to try to capture this strange experience of living, and I think this freedom makes her plays especially fresh and rich. So Stage Kiss is set in my favorite place: the theater. That weird temple where reality and illusion meet. Where we all pretend an empty rehearsal room is a Manhattan penthouse and a paper cup is a glass of champagne. This story is fun because
it shows the audience a play’s entire journey from auditions to opening night, and we watch as the homely stand-in objects and clothes gradually become their dazzling, “real” performance versions. It’s a wildly optimistic evocation of progress. But of course even then, the theatrical walls are only painted on the side the audience sees and the champagne glass is only molded plastic and not the cut crystal it’s pretending to be. I love the crazy juxtapositions of the theater and with this production we’ve tried to celebrate this embrace of reality and illusion. Like a stage kiss itself. PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P5

REKA LENA’S WEARABLE ART BY KRISTINA LEACH When Elena Avanesova moved to Los Angeles with her family in 2009, she describes the Geffen Playhouse as her “first cultural discovery.” An artist for over 25 years, her traditional medium was oil painting, but her work has now come to include a unique collection of scarves, wraps and shawls, known as Reka Lena. “Finding new people to introduce your art to can be challenging,” says Avanesova. “However, by turning my art into silk scarves, it gives new life to the work.” Elena’s pieces have been showcased at the Geffen Playhouse during the 2015/2016 season Girls Night Out Signature Series after-party events. “I appreciate the beauty of human nature. When I create, I create from life.” Elena says, “The theater is like that. The playwrights, actors and designers also work from the same passion of life — the connection is felt through the work.” This year, you might be seeing some of Elena’s wearable art adorning men’s suits, as she hopes to create a line of uniquely handsome pocket squares. When asked if there was anyone in particular on whom she would love to see one of her scarves, she responded: “My favorite singer, Regina Spektor. I picture her in my ‘Romance in Blue’ scarf with red tulips on blue background.” We can say, with a fair amount of certainty: it’s only a matter of time. For more information about Elena Avanesova and Reka Lena, visit her website: www.rekalena.com

Profoundly disadvantaged youth gain access to year-round opportunities to experience world-class live theater. This is not just one-time access, but a deeply impactful program.
1 MONTH PRIOR TO EACH MATINEE Our Director of Education and Community Engagement creates a detailed study guide to help students more fully understand the themes of the play.
1 WEEK PRIOR TO EACH MATINEE Geffen Playhouse teaching artists go into classrooms to explore the play with students and prepare them for the matinee, using theater activities and the study guides as tools.
DAY OF EACH MATINEE
