Welcome to the opening of the 2022/2023 Season and Matthew López’s The Inheritance.

I first saw Matthew’s play in 2018, during its West End run and was blown away. A sevenhour, two-part production is a huge risk, and it is exactly the scope of that risk—the theat rical ambition, emotional depth, and thematic power—that makes The Inheritance an unfor gettable experience. His writing vibrates with contemporary immediacy that has only grown more urgent in the tumultuous years since the play’s premiere.

We are immensely proud to bring this piece to Los Angeles and thrilled that the production reunites Matthew López with director Mike Donahue. Longtime collaborators and friends, Matthew and Mike last worked together at the Geffen in 2017 on the spectacular West Coast premiere of The Legend of Georgia McBride.

This production uses elements of the design and staging of the London and New York productions directed by Stephen Daldry. Mike has taken the palette created by Stephen and brought the play to life for a new cast and audi ence. The breathtaking result is truly a testa ment to Mike and Matthew’s understanding of and trust in one another.

We hope that you will have the opportunity to see both Parts 1 and 2 of this story. While they certainly can stand on their own, the richness of the entire journey cannot be denied. The Inheritance exemplifies our continued desire to create work that is richer, deeper, and bolder— we can think of no better way to welcome you back for a new season of groundbreaking work.

Portal consists of a large-scale origami lotus, the Buddhist color of enlightenment. In Taiwan’s Buddhist tradition, grieving family members fold 108 origami lotus blossoms each week for seven weeks. Each week, the 108 paper lotuses are ceremonial ly burned until the cremation of the lotus covered-body on the forty-ninth day. Forced to mourn the death of my grandparents from afar during COVID-19, I was struck by the powerful symbol of the ritual burning of

origami lotus, as a portal for the dead to the afterlife, and as a portal for those mourn ing to solace. The death of a loved one is a shattering of life as we know it. As Arund hati Roy writes, “pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew... It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.” Through meditative labor, this fragile paper bloom becomes a symbol of hope and rebirth in the face of loss.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Working in installation, painting, photogra phy, and video, artist Flora Kao explores the poetics of human relationship with environ ment. Examining the psychological potential of constructed space, Kao transforms every day structures into systems of beauty. Kao examines our impulse to order and preserve in the face of the unknown and uncontrolla ble. In mapping presence and absence, Kao meditates on memory, mortality, displace ment, and decay. Hovering between restraint and collapse, Kao’s work anchors moments of intense emotion through repeated action. Kao’s art responds to our contemporary dislocation from environment. In construct ing moments of poetic beauty, Kao chal lenges the rote experience of space through unexpected sensory encounters with the organic and handmade.

It’s an ambitious undertaking of which we are very proud. With the launch of this season, we continue to forge new creative paths in our evolution as a home for the performing arts in Los Angeles. The Inheritance Part 1 & Part 2 is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

The Inheritance was originally commissioned by Hartford Stage (Darko Tresnjak, Artistic Director; Michael Stotts, Managing Director)

The world premiere was performed in London at the Young Vic, Part 1 on March 2, 2018, and Part 2 on March 9, 2018. This production was supported by Nattering Way LLC and Sonia Friedman Productions.

The Inheritance transferred to the Noel Coward Theatre in the West of London, with a first performance of Part 1 on September 21, 2018, and of Part 2 on September 28, 2018.

Before that he starred as Pharus Young in Choir Boy at Yale Repertory Theatre, where he was also seen in Father Comes Home From the Wars: Part 1. Israel holds an M.F.A. in Acting from the Yale School of Drama where his credits include blues for miss lucille, Hamlet, If Pretty Hurts Ugly Must Be a Muhfucka, Slave Play, among others. He also holds a B.F.A. in Musical Theatre from Carnegie Mellon University.

Adam Kantor is making his L.A. stage debut. He won an Emmy and a Grammy for his performance in the Tony-win ning Broadway production of The Band’s Visit, as well as an Outer Critics Circle honor for his performance in Darling Grenadine at Roundabout Theatre Company. Previously, on Broadway, Adam starred in Fiddler on the Roof, Next to Normal, and Rent (final cast, filmed live for Sony Pictures). Off-Broadway, he starred in The Last Five Years at Second Stage Theater and Avenue Q at New World Stages. Avi is a graduate of Cali fornia State University, Fullerton and is also the narrator of several audiobooks including the New York Times Best Seller Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. Film credits include Landline, and short films To Be With You (Out fest 2019) and Kind Of (Outfest 2020). Currently, they are the voice behind Raine Whispers on Disney Channel’s animated series The Owl House. Amanda Rose Villarreal is an intimacy choreographer and immersive artist. They are an associate faculty with Theatrical Intimacy Education, as well as having trained with IDC, IPA, and Moving Body Arts. Amanda Rose earned their M.A. in Theatre Production with an emphasis in Directing from Central Wash ington University and their Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder. After recently relocating to the L.A. area, they have choreographed intimacy for Pasadena Playhouse’s Uncle Vanya. Other recent intimacy choreography credits include work with The Catamounts and Boulder Ensemble Theatre Com pany, as well as creating consent

mechanics for, and performing in, playable performances at Sinking Ship Creations in NYC and Moonrise LARP in Chicago. Amanda Rose is also co-found er and editor of the Journal of Consent-Based Performance, and assistant faculty of Theatre Education at California State University Fullerton.

Olivia O’Connor joined the Geffen as Literary Manager & Dramaturg in July 2022. Her previous creative development experience includes staff positions at Pittsburgh CLO (Manager of New Work Develop ment) and Roundabout Theatre Company (Artistic Associate), as well as dramaturgy and selection committee work with City The atre Company, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Bricolage Production Company, Third Space Theatre, The Flea Theater, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, and the 5th Avenue Theatre. Gil Cates, Jr. is Executive Director of Geffen Playhouse. In this role, he is responsible for managing the Geffen’s dayto-day operations; developing

new, ongoing theater partner ships and leading its mission to inform, entertain and inspire diverse audiences with live theater of the highest caliber. Prior to being named Executive Director in 2015, Cates served as Geffen Playhouse Board Vice Chairman since 2012 and served as a producer and di rector in theater, film and televi sion. His theater credits include the award-winning Names (Matrix Theatre Company) and Three Sisters and David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre (both at Syracuse Stage). Cates’ film credits include The Surface (starring Sean Astin and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Chris Mulkey), Jobs (starring Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad, Dermot Mulroney, as well as Geffen Playhouse alumni Matthew Modine and Ron El dard) and the 2011 feature film Lucky (starring Colin Hanks, Ari Graynor and Ann-Margret). In addition, Cates co-produced and co-directed the critically acclaimed Life After Tomorrow, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, which premiered on Showtime. His other films include Deal (starring Burt Reynolds, Bret Harrison and Charles Durning) and The Mesmerist (starring Jessica Capshaw and Geffen Playhouse alumnus Neil Patrick Harris). Cates’ television direc torial debut was an episode of the NBC comedy Joey, starring Emmy winner Matt LeBlanc. He is currently directing a doc umentary short chronicling the journey of one of the first refu gee families to flee Ukraine and arrive in the U.S. after escaping the Russian invasion, set for release in 2023. He studied at the National Theatre Institute in Waterford, Connecticut, and holds a B.F.A. in Drama from Syracuse University.

BEHNAZ ATAEE Chief Financial Officer

Behnaz “Nazy” Ataee is Chief Financial Officer of Geffen Playhouse. In this role, she has oversight responsibility

for accounting functions of the theater, including operating and capital budgets. In addition, she supports all IT and HR activ ities. Behnaz was named Chief Financial Officer in 2015 after serving as General Manager since 2002. She first joined Geffen Playhouse in 1999. Previ ously, Ataee worked as a senior financial analyst for Ultratech Inc., an international semicon ductor company based in San Jose. Prior to Ultratech, she was an auditor for Van Sloten

CPA, after holding the position of Director of Accounting at FABS Management, where she was responsible for overseeing the finances of more than 25 non-profit organizations. As a financial professional with more than 30 years’ experience in for-profit and non-profit financial management and au diting, Ataee began her career in the Bay Area as a partner in a small tech startup. She holds a master’s degree from Pepper dine University.

THE WITNESS GENERATION

Rob Russo and Jamie DuMont, hosts of The Fabulous Invalid Podcast, sat down with playwright Matthew López in March of 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 pan demic forced the Broadway production of The Inheritance to close. The episode was released on May 6, 2020.

This transcript has been condensed and edited for clarity.

MATTHEW LÓPEZ: It started with the novel, Howards End . I was so in love with that book and the film as a teenager, and it has stayed with me all my life. I was in Central Park one afternoon in 2008, rereading it for the hundredth time. And it was just this bolt of inspiration. I knew in that instant that I could take these families from the novel from three social classes and retell it using gay men from three different generations.

ROB RUSSO: We were both struck by the way that the play dramatizes intergenera tional relationships among gay men, which is something that we don’t really see a lot in media. What inspired you to craft a story that touches on this dynamic of gay men from different generations?

As a gay man who was born in 1977— alive during the epidemic, but not old enough to be directly imperiled by it—I’ve always thought of my generation as a wit ness generation. We witnessed the events in the ‘80s and the early ‘90s, but we were not directly impacted by them. And then

we became adults, and our lives became settled as adults. And now there’s a new world that I’m watching this next genera tion of the queer community run with: this explosion of openness, of redefining who we are and who we are in the world.

ROB RUSSO: I have to imagine that some one who’s just now turning 18 or 20 would see this play in an entirely different way than I do, as someone in his 30s, or as you do, as someone in his 40s. It’s amazing how that small difference in time can mean so much for the progress of gay men, but also the timeline of this epidemic.

great solace in learning about my history as a gay man, my history as a member of the LGBTQ community, my history as an American, my history as a Puerto Rican American. I mean, it’s trite, but those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. And as I was writing the play, I saw the election of Donald Trump. I saw a lot of things that began to feel analogous to the epidemic years, to a lot of calamities in world history.

It is very difficult for me to imagine what the world looks like to an 18-yearold right now. And people have asked me, why are there only two characters from the younger generation in the play?

MATTHEW LÓPEZ: A lot can happen in a small period of time, and the world can change overnight. Anybody who has even a cursory understanding of history knows that’s true. I think that there’s a general human tendency towards amnesia. Every generation believes they invented sex. Every generation believes they invented rebellion. The idea of revolution seems to have been invented by whatever generation has come up with the latest one.

[But] there’s nothing that we haven’t seen before. Everything can be understood within the continuum of history. I’ve taken

One is it’s a question of adaptation, which is that the Schlegel sisters became Toby and Eric, and they’re the central characters in the novel; therefore those became the central characters in my play. They are the age that I roughly was when I started working on the play. I can write about my generation. I have copious amounts of research and books and films and plays to help understand the generation that came before me. But the generation that is com ing after me, their story is only starting to be written, and they’re the ones who are

going to write it, not me. I realized quickly that any attempt on my part to do with their generation what I allowed myself to do with my own would be dishonest. It’s not my story to tell. It’s not my place to speak for them.

JAMIE DUMONT: I came out of the closet in the mid-’80s, at the height of the AIDS epi demic. And the thing I remember about that time is how it felt very special to be a part of the gay community. I feel that a lot of that is in this play, and it resonates quite clearly. It’s important to look back, as you said, and I think it informs our future.

MATTHEW LÓPEZ: One of my favorite historians, Shelby Foote, always contended that American history really began with the Civil War: everything that happened before the Civil War led up to the Civil War, and everything that happened after the Civil War was a result of the Civil War. And I think an argument could be made that the gay community was forged really in those [epidemic] years.

I look at those years as a student of history and as someone who knows people who were alive then and who have told me their stories. And of course the question that I always ask myself is, what would you have done? What would your reaction have been? Would you have hid? I hope not, I like to think not. Would I have been on the front lines, would I have been storming the FDA? Would I have died? There are so many “what ifs” that no one can answer. But it is the act of investigation into that question that leads to understanding and compassion. For history to be any use to us, it cannot just be facts and figures and numbers. It can’t be cold. It has to be hot. And the way to make it hot is to make it personal and applicable to our lives today.

The act of compassion is not the act of understanding someone’s feelings so much as it is the attempt to imagine yourself in their experience. And that is what I forced myself to do with this play. It’s the spirit in which I wrote the play and it’s what I hope people take away from the play.

I think if there’s any lesson that could be applicable to this play outside of the gay community, it is that no one is im mune from history, and we own our own history, whether we like it or not. We own each other’s history, because in a country as diverse and as disparate as ours, if we don’t own each other’s history, we can’t build a future together.
