THE MODEL APARTMENT
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR THIS POWERFUL PRODUCTION OF THE MODEL APARTMENT marks not only the return home of beloved Geffen Playhouse alum Donald Margulies but also the long overdue return of this remarkable, haunting piece to a Los Angeles stage for the first time in nearly three decades. Donald’s plays have been a favorite here at the Geffen for almost our entire history — from 1999’s Collected Stories to 2014’s The Country House, with four more in between. Our audiences have come to know him as a writer who fearlessly tackles big themes in a profoundly personal way, a master of his craft. When Donald approached us about reviving this play, we jumped at the chance to reexamine a neglected early work that means so much to him. A startlingly keen examination of the effects of trauma, The Model Apartment dares us to confront our capacity as humans to wound and to endure. Through the lens of an intimate family drama, the play asks questions with a global relevance, reflecting on the brutality of the Holocaust while still speaking to the very current experience of survivors of conflict. How do demons of the past become monsters in the present? And is it possible to escape cyclical violence — whether that violence be inflicted by the state, by a parent, or even by a child? With great excitement, we welcome Los Angeles director Marya Mazor to the Geffen family. Marya has gathered a fantastic team of designers who have skillfully situated us inside a model apartment, capturing both the hope for a perfect future and the false promise that such a setting embodies. Marilyn Fox, Michael Mantell, Annika Marks and Giovanni Adams make up the powerhouse cast. I am thrilled to launch our 2016/2017 season in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater with this bold piece and to welcome you to the Geffen. Enjoy the show. Randall Arney ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

WELCOME TO THE 2016/2017 SEASON IN THE AUDREY Skirball Kenis Theater. For those of you who are loyal patrons of the Geffen Playhouse, thank you for joining us again this season for what is sure to be a diverse year of thought-provoking new works in this space, including an American masterpiece, a brilliant one-man show and a world premiere. For those who are new to this gem of a theater, we look forward to getting to know you throughout the season. This year, in partnership with Participant Media, we are excited to launch a series of public conversations designed to deepen the dialogue with our patrons about the art on our stages. Artists and experts will join audiences for these events, which will dive into the social issues and themes within each of the plays at the Geffen this fall. These events are free and open to the public, and will be moderated by John Horn of KPCC. We look forward to a lively discussion around The Model Apartment in October. For more information, email Jessica Brusilow Rollins at conversations@geffenplayhouse.org. We also look forward to continuting to engage our community and high school partners in year-round educational programming, centered around each play’s themes and the important questions the playwrights raise in their work. Thank you for being here to help us kick off our 2016/2017 season in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater with The Model Apartment. We hope you will be inspired by the art you see on stage today. Enjoy the show!
