THE AUDREY SKIRBALL KENIS THEATER AT THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE
the jacksonian
From the artistic Director
WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE We at the Geffen are tremendously excited to bring together Pulitzer Prize winner Beth Henley, Tony Award winner Robert Falls and an ensemble of such celebrated actors: Ed Harris, Glenne Headly, Amy Madigan, Bill Pullman and Bess Rous. We’re thrilled to welcome back some of these artists and to provide a home for all of them and this extraordinary new work by one of America’s most talented playwrights.

Rarely does a project come together with the swiftness that The Jacksonian managed. Just last year several of the above actors gathered to read this new work in Henley’s living room. Then Robert Falls, who had never before helmed one of Henley’s plays despite their long friendship, realized from the moment that he read the script that this was the play on which they would finally collaborate. And shortly thereafter we were getting calls to produce the world premiere. Through The Jacksonian, a humorous, dark and mysterious piece, Henley explores the underbelly of Southern life in the mid-1960s with a visit to a seedy motel populated by an eclectic group on the night of a terrible crime. Falls, who has excelled at explorations of the darker side of the human condition with writers from Eugene O’Neill to Arthur Miller to Rebecca Gilman, has honed the intricacies of Henley’s work with a strong, deft hand; and with his talented team of designers, he has created an especially haunting experience. And the cast: That these five esteemed actors with such busy film and stage schedules agreed a year ago to this distant three-month period is, indeed, some kind of theater miracle. And all for you. The Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater continues to be the space for which we have always hoped. Our sustained commitment to new work has allowed us to produce wonderfully provocative, intimate theatergoing. We are thrilled to have subscribers joining us in the Audrey for the first time this season, and we look forward to bringing you yet another season of exciting work in 2012/2013. For the time being though, we invite you to take a trip to the South through the eyes of Beth Henley. Mississippi may never seem the same. Enjoy the show,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Jacksonian, our second play in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater this 2011/2012 season. It is a privilege to host the world premiere of this dark tale written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Beth Henley and helmed by Tony Award winning director Robert Falls, which transpires in a seedy Southern motel where nothing is as it seems. In addition to our excitement surrounding The Jacksonian, we are delighted to announce that our annual gala, Backstage at the Geffen, will take place on Monday, June 4, 2012 and we will honor Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos. Backstage is a truly special, unique event that I look forward to each year, and this year we will do our best to maintain the intimate, spirited atmosphere that Gil Cates set into motion and always executed brilliantly. The stories, laughter and slight dose of irreverence never disappoint, and I hope you will join us for this very special occasion. Returning to her roots: Beth Henley talks about
The Jacksonian, her writing process and the tough road home
Freedom Summer was a campaign in the United States launched in June 1964 to attempt to register as many African-American voters as possible in Mississippi. The project also set up dozens of Freedom Schools and Freedom Houses in small towns throughout Mississippi to aid the local black population.
A writer’s process is always deeply personal and individual but in the case of Beth Henley I was unaware of how much the Jackson, Mississippi of her youth informed her most recent work. Revisiting one of the darkest eras of American history, Henley creates a world peopled with characters who have a civil rights war raging just beyond the front door, and an entirely different battle raging within. AL: Can you talk a bit about the genesis of The Jacksonian and the production? What was your jumping off point? BH: I’ve been working on the play — it’s horrible to think about it — for about five years now. I have done at least three readings in my living room, a reading in New York and a workshop at New York Stage and Film in Poughkeepsie. It’s been a long, interesting and good process. AL: What was the spark that lit the idea? BH: This is the first play I’ve written that takes place in Jackson, the place I was born. I have written other plays that take place in Mississippi — specifically Hazelhurst where my grandparents and cousins lived. Then I went off to write P4 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINe
plays set in Chicago, California and then ultimately came back to the South. But finally, at this point, I was able to come back around and write a play about Jackson circa 1964, which was a very dark time in the South and made an indelible impression on my life. AL: Tone-wise this play is significantly darker than your previous work. Is that a direct result of the time and place of the play? BH: Historically, 1964 was a very violent time in Mississippi. It was the time of Freedom Summer — students were coming into town to register blacks to vote, people were getting murdered and black churches were being burned. A synagogue in town was blown up as was
the Rabbi’s house. I suppose the chaos of that time and the chaos of the world that I was growing up in was too much for me to bear until I got this far away from it. AL: In terms of going into production, what is your process in the room with your director Bob Falls and the actors. BH: Bob had a very interesting way of starting rehearsal. We read through the play and then we read through the play again in chronological order. Then he had each person read a line so that we could just hear the facts of the play. In a certain way, he prevents people from just jumping right in — he prefers that we all stalk around the pit a little. Because of the slow process, if an actor brought up a question about a certain line, I would know the answer in my head but it wouldn’t be written in the play. His process allows me to fill in what I had left off the page. These questions from Bob and the actors have lead me to large rewrites including changing the climax of the play based on a suggestion of Bob’s. From the second week of rehearsal alone there are five rewritten monologues.
THE JACKSONIAN
BY AMY LEVINSON AL: Do you find that it’s difficult to know early on in the process, before an actor has completely inhabited the role, whether a change in the script is warranted or not? Or do you feel like you can get the information you need about the script from the get-go? BH: Well, with this cast it’s pretty much from the get-go. They could make reading the telephone book work. But it’s also a matter of me listening to the rhythm of the piece, and that’s far easier to hear when it’s read by actors as opposed to when you are reciting it in your own head. This is one of the primary things I’m focusing on at this point in the process. AL: Which of the characters in The Jacksonian do you find to be the most sympathetic? BH: Probably Perch — the dentist. All of these characters are struggling with what the culture is versus what goodness or minor kindnesses are. This is a play about people who are living in an evil place at an evil time — how they survive, or not survive, the havoc it wreaks on their families and how they can have any sort of authentic relationship with anyone because they are living on this pile of lies.
(L) Freedom Summer volunteers, most of them northern college students, travel south to aid local civil rights workers in helping educate black children and organize black voters. (R) Three Civil Rights workers who were murdered in Neshoba County on June 21, 1964.
AL: Because you had heard the actors read the play previously, did you feel that they influenced the development of the characters as you went into your second draft? BH: Not really, to tell you the truth. The characters are really set in the first draft
This 1964 FBI photograph shows the scene where the burned station wagon driven by James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Mickey Schwerner, Mississippi civil rights workers, was found shortly after their disappearance.
of the play. The fundamental aspects of who these people are won’t change all that much. AL: Can you talk a bit about your process — how do you begin a play? BH: In the case of this play I had a really strong image of a young girl bringing a Christmas tree into a motel room and the man who was there. Then I realized that the man was her father and that was an image that haunted me. Obviously, I knew it was Christmas time. I spend a lot of time writing in these notebooks and none of it makes sense. I write down images, bits of dialogue, scenes, settings. I decide that the man is going to be a dentist so then I do research on dentists. I decide it’s 1964. But these notebooks, about six of them, are just filled with chaotic things. When I feel I have gotten enough ideas onto paper, I go back into the notebooks and circle the things that speak to me the most. Then I’ll type those things up as images, home, being, dialogue, character. I do a lot of “work horse” work so that I can allow my creative self to take over and not get bogged down by my logical mind when I begin the play. PErFORMANCEs MAGAZINE P5

EDUCATION SPOTLIGHT
Seniors from Triangle Square with Geffen Playhouse Education Associate Connor White.
The Golden Ticket Program Started in 2010, the Golden Ticket Program is designed to significantly improve the quality of life for economically disadvantaged and socially isolated seniors through participatory arts experiences that stimulate them intellectually, creatively, socially and emotionally. The program serves senior residences and centers throughout the Los Angeles area and provides tickets to Gil Cates Theater season productions and select special events. The program also provides transportation to and from the theater. All participants are served with workshops led by Geffen teaching artists and given comprehensive study guides. After each show, seniors are treated to a reception where they enjoy refreshments, socialize and discuss the play. It’s a wonderful chance for vibrant community members, many of whom lack the opportunity to leave their residences often, to experience the cultural and social connection of live theater. Thanks to the generous support of Geffen Playhouse donors, we currently serve five senior communities. For more information on how you can support the Golden Ticket Program, please contact our Development Department at 310.208.6500 ext.112. PErFORMANCEs MAGAZINE P17

donor spotlight The Geffen Playhouse thanks City National Bank and Geffen Playhouse Board Member Martha Henderson for their longtime generous support of our theater We are immensely grateful to Martha Henderson for her service to the Geffen Playhouse, and to City National Bank, an organization deeply committed to community involvement. City National Bank has been an invaluable partner to the Geffen Playhouse for many years, dating back as far as 2005, when the Bank was extremely helpful in our capital campaign. Furthermore, for many years City National has been a Presenting Sponsor at our annual gala Backstage at the Geffen, and we are honored to name City National Bank as this year’s title sponsor.
“Martha is the kind of Board member that enhances the value of our theater because of her participation. She is deeply experienced in so many different areas which she brings to each and every issue the Board deals with.” In 2010, we were privileged to have Martha Henderson join our Board of Directors. With her combination of spirited support of the arts and business acumen, she has proven a true asset to the Geffen Playhouse. Ms. Henderson serves as Executive Vice President and Manager of City National Bank’s Entertainment Division. Now in her 28th year there, she oversees a team of 160 entertainment banking professionals in Beverly Hills, New York, Nashville and Atlanta, and under her leadership, City National’s Entertainment Division has been recognized by the entertainment industry as the leader in providing personal financial
services to business managers, talent agencies and entertainment law firms. In 2010, Ms. Henderson was the only banker to be named by Variety magazine to its list of the top 50 most influential women in the entertainment industry. Chairman of the Board Frank Mancuso stated, “Martha is the kind of Board member that enhances the value of our theater because of her participation. She is deeply experienced in so many different areas which she brings to each and every issue the Board deals with. Her love of theater makes her a 10+ Board member.” Once again, many thanks to Martha Henderson and City National Bank for being exceptional friends and partners to the Geffen Playhouse.
