From the Producing Director

WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE It is always a pleasure when rehearsals begin and the production is under the watchful eye of my talented colleague and partner in crime, Randy Arney. That is the case with Conor McPherson’s The Seafarer. Randy Arney is fast becoming the preeminent American director for the plays of Conor McPherson. In his Geffen directorial debut (2001) he helmed a stand out production of The Weir featuring John Mahoney. That show was a huge critical and audience success. Now both John and Randy reunite for McPherson’s Tony-nominated The Seafarer. A crackling piece of playwriting, The Seafarer is a perfect combination of comedy, suspense and good old Irish story telling. In Randy’s hands (he previously directed both John Mahoney and Tom Irwin in the Steppenwolf production earlier this season), the production epitomizes rural Ireland with all of its beautiful idiosyncrasies and superstitions. This second production offers Randy an opportunity to look at the play anew, and with the addition of three stellar actors to his original cast, to make additional discoveries. Rounding out this cast are Andrew Connolly, Paul Vincent O’Connor (joining us happily for his second Geffen stint) and Matt Roth. All seasoned stage actors; each inhabits their new roles with the expertise that Tom Irwin and John Mahoney have applied to theirs. McPherson writes plays that are truly ensemble pieces and this production emphasizes how each individual character in a play contributes to the effectiveness of the whole. The dynamism created when all of the actors convene on the stage clearly proves that the sum is even greater than the parts. McPherson describes the living room setting as part pub, part living space. Set Designer Takeshi Kata, Lighting Designer Dan Ionazzi, Costume Designer Janice Pytel and Sound Designer Richard Woodbury have done an exemplary job. The design suits the play so seamlessly that we are left to wonder if the living room was created by its inhabitants, or the other way around. We hope you enjoy Conor McPherson’s latest foray into the hyper-natural and supernatural. We would reveal more, but we wouldn’t want to give away our hand…

FROM THE CHAIRMAN FRANK G. MANCUSO

I want to extend my thanks and congratulations to all those involved in making this year’s Backstage at the Geffen such a remarkable success. For those of you who attended, I know you were treated to an extraordinary night filled with laughter and music. The night has become known as one of the most enjoyable events of the year. For those of you who missed it, put it on your calendars as a “must do” for next year. Personally, I want to thank Rita Wilson and Leslie Moonves, this year’s award recipients, for their outstanding commitment to theater. All the money raised from Backstage at the Geffen helps to ensure the future of our ever-growing artistic, educational, outreach and other programs. The Geffen Playhouse programs include student matinees, outreach to community (including seniors, veterans, at risk youngsters, touring productions), new play commissions, workshops and readings. We truly believe that these programs support the artists of today, encourage the artists of tomorrow and develop the theater lovers of the future. With such large cuts in arts funding, it has become an even greater imperative that we contribute to arts education and to the cultivation of young artists. These partnerships with young audiences and emerging artists are part of how we define our mission as a theater and it is how we contribute to the vitality of our community. If you have not yet had the opportunity to make a donation to the playhouse, I ask you to join me as a donor. Contact the Development Department at (310) 208-6500 and learn about the rewards of being a Geffen Playhouse donor. Finally, I want to congratulate Randy Arney, our Artistic Director, who is directing tonight’s play, and the cast and crew of The Seafarer. So on with the show, I hope you enjoy the performance. Respectfully yours,

Frank G. Mancuso Chairman, Geffen Playhouse
