MODULE 4 | Leadership in Action

A panel of senior University leaders, moderated by President Donna E. Shalala, discuss their expectations from leaders, as well as their thoughts on the University’s areas of teaching, research, service, and community involvement. Panel members—Tom LeBlanc, title; Joseph Natoli, title; Pascal Goldschmidt, title; and Sergio Gonzalez, title.

This module focuses on combining on-the-job training with coaching and classroom activities to demonstrate learned skills. Participants will complete a variety of activites developed in conjunction with their supervisors. The on-going assignments and supervisor feedback will allow new leaders to demonstrate and test the knowledge gained throughout the program.

Session length: 1.5 Hours

The Essentials of Leadership program at the University of Miami is designed to give managers the necessary tools, experiences, and foundational knowledge to develop them into influential leaders and allies to the University’s continued progress and growth.

Newl hires and newly promoted managers must attend a New Leader Orientation within 6 months of hire or date of promotion into a supervisory position.

MODULE 2 | Choosing to Lead and Change as the New Normal

Tools will be provided to support the participants’ supervisors through activites that may include: -- Shadowing leaders -- Leading projects -- Facilitating strategic meetings and training sessions -- Continuous improvement initiatives that impact the department or organization To be completed 1-2 months following completion of Module 3.

This module will answer the question—what is required from a leader at the University of Miami? Participants will identify their strengths and areas of opportunity to successfully lead others. In addition, they will learn key requirements of leadership when managing and advocating change. After completion of this module, participants will: -- Understand the impact of effective management and leadership in organizations -- Develop an individual leadership development plan based on a leadership assessment -- Transition from being a targets of change into agents of change -- Understand change and its impact on productivity -- Build a toolbox to successfully navigate change for themselves and their teams Session length: 2.5 Days

MODULE 3 | Driving Results Through Others This module focuses on managing team performance and holding others accountable for meeting expectations. After completion of this module, participants will: -- Learn how effective leaders drive and facilitate superior performance from their teams -- Improve communication strategies and understand the value and purpose of multiple communication methods -- Empower staff through effective delegation, feedback, clear performance and productivity goals, and specific accountability measures -- Initiate and sustain a team environment that maximizes productivity and engagement -- Understand the legal aspects of managing talent, including FLSA and HR policies Session length: 2 Days

ESSENTIALS OF LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The program leads participants through a series of four chronological modules, meant to be completed within a sevenmonth time frame. These tailored modules will equip participants with a variety of skills essential to performing with excellence through others, advocating change, and delivering outstanding results.
