FOREWORD During the dead of night on December 15th 1989, Sicilian born Arturo Di Modica arrived on Wall Street with his now world famous Charging Bull sculpture on the back of a truck, which he proceeded to drop outside of the Stock Exchange with no prior permission from the City of New York. This guirlla-style installation made headlines around the world and Charging Bull went on to become one of the world’s most famous pieces of public sculpture. Charging Bull was first conceived back in 1987 in the wake of Black Monday and the proceeding market slump. The mounument was Di Modica’s attempt at restoring bullish finncial confidence back into the markets. The sculpture was created in Di Modica’s Crosby Street studio over a two year period and financed soley by the artist. In 2009 Di Modica was commissioned by the City of Shanghai to create a second monumental Bull which was installed in the prestigous Bund District. This second monument is slightly younger and leaner than the original Wall Street Bull, a signal from Shanghai of it’s growing financial stength and dominance on the world stage. The Bund Bull has gone on to acheive the same heights of fame in the East as it’s counterpart in the West. Now 73, Di Modica lives between New York and Sicily. Over the past decade Di Modica has been working on his biggest and most ambitious project to date, Studio of the New Renaissance, an international school for young sculptors complete with an open-air theatre along with various other facilities open to the public. Di Modica is represented excusively by Geist.
