Foreword British artist Nic Fiddian-Green is the world’s leading living equestrian sculptor. Since a fateful encounter with the Horse of Selene at the British Museum in 1983, Fiddian-Green has strived to create the perfect depiction of the equine form. His horse sculptures celebrate the beauty, energy and quietude of the animal and have won him worldwide acclaim. Fiddian-Green rose to prominence in 2010 with his installation of Still Water at London’s Marble Arch. The 33ft bronze sculpture depicts a horse serenely drinking water from a solid plinth situated at a busy intersection in the heart of London. The contrast between the calm and solitude of the sculpture with the hustle and bustle of its surroundings have made it one of London’s landmark monuments. Many of Fiddian-Green’s most important works include monumental site-specific commissions. These include the Greekhead-Artemis (2011), a 30ft bronze sculpture of a horse head, first displayed overlooking the racecourse at Glorious Goodwood. Fiddian-Green has become a regular feature at Royal Ascot and in 2013 unveiled his 14ft Copper Horse which went on to make the front page of the Financial Times. Throughout 2014 the work was exhibited outside the prestigious Economist Building in St James, London. In 2014 Fiddian-Green made his debut in the Asian art market with his installation of a 16ft horse head in Hong Kong’s Central district. The sculpture is inspired by the horses of the Imperial Han Dynasty and has been placed on the surface of a pool of water, giving the impression of a horse calming drinking from a fountain. Fiddian-Green lives and works from his country home and studio in Surrey. Demand for his work continues to grow, and his sculptures are regularly displayed in New York, Hong Kong and Sydney. As the artist’s style has refined and matured, his place as the greatest equestrian sculptor in the history of art is secured.
