Jamaica’s Total Entrepreneurial Activity for 2008 was
16%, 4.3% below the 2006 figures, indicating a
decline in the rate of start-ups of new businesses. In
the nascent category which comprises individuals who
have taken steps to create a new business within the
past year, entrepreneurial activity was 9%. For new
businesses, (those that have paid wages or salaries for
more than three months but less than 42 months)
total entrepreneurial activity was 7.1%. For businesses
that have been in operation for over 42 months
(established businesses), the rate decreased from
10.5% in 2006 to 9.1% in 2008. Necessity driven entrepreneurship
(7.6%) has now surpassed opportunity driven
entrepreneurship (7.3%). More males in Jamaica
(16.9%) are involved in entrepreneurial activity than
females (14.4%).
