The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is a multinational research project designed to provide annual assessments of the entrepreneurial sector in a range of countries. Fifty four countries participated in the project in 2009. The global data revealed that entrepreneurial activity declined in most of the Gem countries in 2009, but for a minority of the countries studied, including Jamaica, entrepreneurial activity increased. Total entrepreneurial activity in Jamaica for the year 2009 was recorded at 23.6%, a 7.6% increase over last year‟s figure. Of this figure, 13% fell in the nascent category, while the other 10.6% was attributed to new business owners
