MAKE AN EASY LAVA LAMP!!! Here is how to make a lava lamp and why that is happening.

HYPOTHESIS

To

make a lava lamp using oil, water and some other things.

MATERIALS Water  A clear plastic bottle  Vegetable oil  Food coloring  Berocca Tablet 

PROCEDURE 1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

6.

Pour water into plastic bottle until it is around one quarter full. Pour in vegetable oil until the bottle is nearly full. Wait until the water and oil has separated. Add around a dozen drops of food coloring to the bottle. Watch as the food coloring falls and mixes with the water. Cut the Berocca tablet in half and drop one of them into the bottle, things should start to get a little crazy like a real lava lamp.

CONCLUSION 

I thought that the experiment was really cool but I did give up on it because the first tablet we tried wasn’t strong enough so it didn’t work which wasn’t good! I learnt that water and oil don’t mix but food coloring fights through the oil to the water. Also this experiment proved that my hypothesis was correct.

WHAT HAPPENED?  Oil

and water don’t mix very well. The oil was on top because it has a lower density than water. When you drop the Berocca in it releases bubbles of carbon dioxide gas that rises to the top and takes the colored water along for the ride. When the water gets to the top the gas releases which make the water go down because it doesn’t have any energy left to keep it up at the top.
